Kensington Screw Dock, Penn Street above Maiden, Philadelphia The above establishment has been recently refitted and is now in perfect order for the raising of sailing vessels or propellers, having been in successful operation since 1830, without a single mishap, it is with renewed confidence that proprietors ask for a continuation of patronage heretofore enjoyed. Vessels sail or float into the dock and are raised without strain on any one part. Bilge blocks being worked in such a manner as to take the vessel in her natural shape. The dock is located in the most enterprising part of the town, in the immediate neighborhood of the largest ship yards, black smith shops, mast yards, riggers, block makers, plumbers, painters, &c. &c. with ample depth of water at the wharves for the largest vessels. Watchman always on the premises, also a fire plug on the premises with Schuylkill water with over 300 ft. hose, & can be reached by Glenat's Second Street Omnibusses [sic] at any time during the day. Title: Roussel's premium perfumery Manufactured by X. Bazin, successor to E. Roussel. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing advertising text surrounded by an ornate flowery border. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Bazin served as the lab director for perfumer Eugene Roussel from circa 1840 to circa 1849 when he assumed proprietorship of the business. Bazin continued to use Roussel's name until circa 1853. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. In the foreground, men and boys, across from two men shaking hands, inspect an ornately painted "City Passenger R.R." car on display in the street in front of the factory. Nearby, a boy admires an elegantly dressed lady while a newsboy hawks a paper to a gentleman on promenade with two ladies who pass a woman, possibly attired in mourning garb. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Two gentlemen stand on the porch to the office and a woman with children uses the property for recreation. Title: Alfred Jenks & Son's machine works, Bridesburg
Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Outside the complex, a driver handles a four-horse team plodding to pull a truck loaded with two large machines as other factory workers transport planks, carry crates, mill about with their tools, drive a dray, and stand at a shed facing the street. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." At Goodyears, a white man clerk stands at a counter in front of rows of shelves as he attends to a customer. Other patrons, including a white man and woman couple and a white man, converse and depart with rubber belting. A large model boot, shoes, and rubber toys adorn the display windows that are adorned with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." A white man with a cane and an excited white boy, near his mother, peer at the displays from the busy sidewalk., Other activity, on opposite ends of the sidewalk, includes a white man paying a white newsboy for a paper, gentlemen in conversation, and a white man, a book under his arm, strolling by. Between the storefronts, a white man descends stairs within a central entryway. In the street, a coach with turned-down roof, occupied by a white lady, and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The white man laborer transports rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray. Two dogs greet each other in the street near his vehicle. Charles Goodyear patented the process to vulcanize rubber in 1844 and oversaw the factory where vulcanized rubber was practically manufactured at Newtown, Connecticut. Three men in suits, two with top hats and one in a wide-brimmed hat converse near a framed painting. In the center, in front of a draped window, two young boys, one attired in a sack-style jacket, converse and stand near three men attired in suits, one with his back turned. Two of the men wear top hats. To the left, a heavy-set man in a top hat and suit converses with two other gentlemen, one leaning on a stand with a potted plant, in top hats and suits. Lower panel shows an outdoor setting at a lakeside with seven men, two boys, and a woman. Most of the men wear suits, including jackets with tails, top hats, and bow ties. Eight men, a woman, and two boys socialize in clusters of three and four. The men and boys predominately wear suits, and the woman wears a ruffled layered dress with full skirt and as well as a bonnet. The other male figures wear a bed jacket and cap (man) and a dress with sash over bloomers (boy). A large vanity and two chairs furnish the room decorated with framed paintings, carpet, drapery, and wallpaper. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene set before an oceanside. Eight men, including "His Excellency A. Johnson" and "L. Hyneman Proprietor of Masonic Mirror," two boys, and a woman descend upon and stand on the stone pier.
