- Advertisement issued during the Centennial Exhibition 1876 for the upholstery manufacturers and dealers containing illustrations of 5 different styles of patriotic bunting and an exterior view of a residence adorned with bunting and commemorative window shades. Illustrations depict bunting designs composed of shields, flags (including America, France, Great Britain), swaths of fabric, panels, and fringes. One design includes shield with portrait of George Washington. Section of advertisement also includes a design for lettering reading "1776 Union 1876" complemented by the figure of an eagle. View of residence shows a three-story mansard-roofed building with a portico entrance. The name and address of Cunningham & Hill are printed over and within the illustrations. Cunningham & Hill, the partnership between William B. - Advertisement showing the factory complex built 1825-1876 between Ninth, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Buildings house a showroom, storerooms, laboratories, boiler rooms, acid houses, drying rooms, and warehouses. Horse-drawn carts and wagons pick up and make deliveries and travel past the manufactory. In the right of the image, a crossing guard with a signal flag stands at the corner of Ninth and Paris streets. Train cars travel the tracks of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad past a separately-standing warehouse of the factory in the foreground. Opposite the factory and across from the railroad tracks, laborers load a horse-drawn cart with crates and barrels that are lined up in several rows. Also shows pedestrians on the sidewalks, a partial view of a neighboring building, and distant cityscape. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. - View showing the section of the hotel expanded from the neighboring La Pierre House hotel originally built in 1853 after the designs of John McArthur Jr. A horse-drawn carriage passes on Sansom Street, individuals walk on the sidewalk in front of and enter the hotel, and a man on horseback is haulted at the intersection. Also shows the entrance to the "ladies restaurant", a neighboring building on Sansom Street, and a partial view of the original La Pierre House. An American flag adorns the roof of the building. - Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. A grove of trees borders the complex in the left of the image. The partnership of Bergner & Engel was formed in 1870 at the brewery of Bergner (erected 1857-1858) following the dissolution of the partnership of brewers Wolf & Engel. - Exterior view of the woolen mills at Gulf Creek and the Schuylkill River in Conshohocken. Complex includes a main mill; engine house; boiler and dry house; dye house; scouring house; wool house; ware house; steaming houses; storehouse; mill; shoddy mill; engine house; boiler house; carpenter shop; lumber shed; office; gas house; gas holder; and coal and waste house. A flag adorns the property and stacks spew smoke. A fence surrounds the complex outside of which a man on horseback converses with two gentlemen, two ladies stroll, and a horse-drawn wagon is stopped. In the background, a farm and pastureland and neighboring mansion house are visible. The mill built in 1854, was purchased by wool manufacturer Benjamin Bullock in the 1860s, and in 1871 his sons George and James Bullock assumed operations. - "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Internal text promotes the quality and styles of hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, harvest hats, mackinaws, and trimmed and untrimmed hats. Text on verso encourages business people to visit Philadelphia prior to the opening of the Exhibition in order to become acquainted with the city and its accommodations, and to purchase spring fashions at the firm., Accompanied by advertising envelope for the firm illustrated with a transfer lithograph of the store at 606 & 608 Market Street. View includes crates being loaded on to a horse-drawn dray parked in front of the store. - Advertisement for Daniel Mershon's Sons heating and ventilating warehouse at 1203 Filbert Street. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Laborers load heating equipment into a store delivery wagon marked "Prepare for Winter" as a patron leaves the store near a policeman standing at the corner of the building. Several pedestrians wearing heavy coats, hats, and muffs walk in the street and on the sidewalks near several horse-drawn vehicles, including sleighs and a "Twelfth Street Passenger Railway" streetcar. Also shows partial views of horse-drawn wagons and of neighboring buildings in addition to a man on horseback. Press views include operators, and exterior view also depicts street and pedestrian traffic and neighboring buildings. Traffic includes a horse-drawn carriage and a man pushing a handcart. - Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease."
