Title: Bergner & Engel's Brewery. Office, 412 Library Street. Brewery, 32d and Thompson Sts. Philadelphia Gustavus Bergner. Charles Engel
Description: Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. A grove of trees borders the complex in the left of the image. The partnership of Bergner & Engel was formed in 1870 at the brewery of Bergner (erected 1857-1858) following the dissolution of the partnership of brewers Wolf & Engel. Description: Includes an illustrated billhead and advertisement. Billhead contains image captioned "Resurgam" and showing a phoenix rising from a mortar of flames marked "WP" in a cluster of clouds. Billhead also contains ornamented type and ornamental details. Advertisement depicts an exterior view of the Weeks & Potter four-story storefront. Description: "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Internal text promotes the quality and styles of hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, harvest hats, mackinaws, and trimmed and untrimmed hats. Description: Advertisement showing the U-shaped factory complex for “Chas. A. Smith. Barbers Supplies” established in 1866 at the southwest corner of Jefferson and North Randolph streets. Title: Christopher Gallagher. Wholesale liquor dealer 806 Lombard St
Description: Advertisement showing the two-story brownstone storefront, adorned with signage, of the liquor dealer who relocated to 806 Lombard Street circa 1875. Barrels, visible through the open central entry, are stacked within the space on the first floor. Architectural ornamentations and etched, arched windows adorn the upper story facade. A man, possibly proprietor Gallagher, stands near one of two other doorways to the establishment across from a laborer prying on one of several barrels lined on the sidewalk. In the street, a boy attends to one of two horses drawing a cart loaded with more barrels. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Title: David Doret collection of Centennial ephemera
Description: Collection consists of approximately one hundred items, primarily advertising ephemera, relating to the Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park in 1876 to celebrate America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and to showcase the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art. Materials include circulars, price lists, advertising cards, stationery, and pamphlets for goods and services, including washboards, ironing tables, saws, springs, sewing machines, mills, mowers, reapers, horse shoes, and hotel accommodations. Other documents include souvenir view books and guidebooks for visitors, maps, a Centennial Board of Finance letterhead, a Centennial award seal, programs, and admission tickets. Several of the items contain illustrations, such as views of the Centennial buildings, and depictions of products. Description: Depicts the interior of the showroom in which a row of sewing machines; mannequins dressed in womens' and girls' garments; and display cases of thread are on view. Signs advertising Domestic and Grover and Baker sewing machines adorn the back wall. Patriotic bunting lines the crown moulding of the room. Description: Circular advertisement containing an "Interior view of E.O. Thompson's Merchant Tailoring Establishment, no. 908 Walnut Street, Philadelphia." Shows the elegantly furnished interior of the shop designed with a fresco ceiling and crown moldings. In the foreground, a display table lined with bolts of cloths stands in the center of the room. Surrounding furnishings include armoires, display dressers covered with bolts of cloth, large mirrors, and an ornate mantelpiece. Objet d'arts, books, and framed fashion plates adorn the mantel that is flanked by two wood chairs. A samovar on a small table stands in front of the mantelpiece. Description: Photographic reproduction of a racist and whimsically absurd advertisement, including an African American shoe shiner, to promote the premier manufactory of blacking established in 1832 by James S. Mason. Depicts the shoe-shiner "blacking" a boot near a white shoe-shine boy with a puppet and a dog. The shoe-shiner, portrayed with grotesque features, holds a brush overhead in his right hand and a boot over the hand of his other arm. He wears a button-down shirt with an open collar, suspenders, and breeches. To his right, is an oversize boot on which the boy has a propped a puppet. The puppet is an African American dandy-like character. The puppet attired in a jacket and high collar shirt holds an umbrella above his head. A dog, as he looks behind, flees from the puppet. Description: Advertising print depicting a racist scene to promote Sam Hague's Original Slave Troupe after their dislocation from their permanent home theatre, St. James Hall, following a fire in 1875. Shows a rhinoceros, a bell on his tail, pulling a cart on which members of the minstrel troupe, portrayed as Black men and women caricartures, perform. On the head of the animal, a man sits, his legs straight out while he holds the pole of a banner designed as an American flag and that is marked with advertising text for the troupe. On the animal's back, men and a woman stand, play hand instruments, and dance on a raised plank. On the cart, men play string and wind instruments, including a bass and trombone, as well as one man, bare-chested and in boxing pants, holds up an open umbrella, on which another man sits and plays the drum. The men figures are attired in suits and/or shirt sleeves and pants. The woman figure wears a kerchief, long-sleeved shirt, with the sleeves pulled up and apron-like, checkered skirt. Scene also includes blades of grass and a flowering plant in the foreground. Sam Hague's Original Slave Troupe evolved from the Georgia Slave Troupe Minstrels for which Samuel Hague assumed part management in 1866. Within the year, the troupe of formerly enslaved individuals, including singers, comedians, and minstrels, traveled to Great Britain to tour the country. In 1869, Hague acquired St. James Hall in Liverpool as a permanent home for the company, as well as a site to organize touring companies. In 1875, the hall was razed by fire and for the next year, the Troupe performed from other theatres such as Philharmonic Theatre, Islington. By this time, the Troupe was mainly comprised of white performers who performed in Blackface and Hague had managed the Troupe with a few different partners., Blackface minstrelsy is a popular entertainment form, originating in the United States in the mid-19th century and remaining in American life through the 20th century. The form is based around stereotypical and racist portrayals of African Americans, including mocking dialect, parodic lyrics, and the application of Black face paint; all designed to portray African Americans as othered subjects of humor and disrespect. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex built 1825-1876 between Ninth, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Buildings house a showroom, storerooms, laboratories, boiler rooms, acid houses, drying rooms, and warehouses. Horse-drawn carts and wagons pick up and make deliveries and travel past the manufactory. In the right of the image, a crossing guard with a signal flag stands at the corner of Ninth and Paris streets. Train cars travel the tracks of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad past a separately-standing warehouse of the factory in the foreground. Opposite the factory and across from the railroad tracks, laborers load a horse-drawn cart with crates and barrels that are lined up in several rows. Description: Advertisement showing a bird’s eye view of the factory complex of several buildings and courtyards originally built 1855 between 18th, Fitzwater, 17th, and Catherine streets. Complex includes the L-shaped building at the corner of Fitzwater and Seventeeth streets that displays the sign “Rosengarten & Sons. Established 1822” near the entrance. The building contained the office, packing rooms, and manufacturing rooms for the firm. Several individuals walk on the sidewalk and horse-drawn carts and wagons travel near the street corner. On the Fitzwater block in front of the complex, which also includes a storage shed, stable, and warehouse for the factory, other wagons and carts are parked. Next to the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart enters a passageway to the complex in which laborers and horse-drawn carts are visible at work. Several of the factory buildings contain smokestacks.
