- Trade card-size advertising calendar containing illustration drawn by Frank Bellew and captioned "Ready-Acting Dog-Tail and Gun-Barrel Attachment." Shows a hunter, with a hunting basket containing a frog on his back, and his dog wearing the gun attachment "Invented by Donald Read" at a pond. The hunter holds a bullfrog in one hand and the trigger attachment in the other as the dog is aimed at a frog in the water. A farmhouse is visible in the background., Contains several lines of advertising text promoting "Scientific American" "the oldest, largest, cheapest, and the best weekly illustrated paper devoted to Engineering, Mechanics, Chemistry, New Inventions, Science and Industrial Progress, published in the United States" on recto. Text describes the depth of the engravings, subscription prices, and benefits of a subscription., Contains calendar for year 1875 and several lines of advertising text promoting "Patents, Munn & Co. Established 1846" on verso. - Includes an illustrated billhead and advertisement. Billhead contains image captioned "Resurgam" and showing a phoenix rising from a mortar of flames marked "WP" in a cluster of clouds. Billhead also contains ornamented type and ornamental details. Advertisement depicts an exterior view of the Weeks & Potter four-story storefront. Signage adorns the buildings and merchandise is visible in the first floor display window and in those on the second floor. Building also adorned with a model of a phoenix rising from a mortar of flames and a flag with the name of the firm and mascot. Firm name on flag transposed in image. Advertisement promotes Weeks & Potter's flavoring extracts, home remedies, cologne, olive oil, wines, and toilet articles on verso. Weeks and Potter, the partnership between Andrew G. Weeks and Warren B. Potter established circa 1852 as dealers of patent medicine, began to manufacture their own medicines in the 1860s. In 1899, the firm was incorporated as Potter Drug & Chemical Corporation., Title supplied by cataloger., Billhead completed in manuscript to D. F. - Description
- Advertisement showing a bird’s eye view of the factory complex of several buildings and courtyards originally built 1855 between 18th, Fitzwater, 17th, and Catherine streets. Complex includes the L-shaped building at the corner of Fitzwater and Seventeeth streets that displays the sign “Rosengarten & Sons. Established 1822” near the entrance. The building contained the office, packing rooms, and manufacturing rooms for the firm. Several individuals walk on the sidewalk and horse-drawn carts and wagons travel near the street corner. On the Fitzwater block in front of the complex, which also includes a storage shed, stable, and warehouse for the factory, other wagons and carts are parked. Next to the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart enters a passageway to the complex in which laborers and horse-drawn carts are visible at work. Several of the factory buildings contain smokestacks. Also shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling near the intersection, surrounding blocks of buildings, and tree tops. - Description
- Collection consists of approximately one hundred items, primarily advertising ephemera, relating to the Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park in 1876 to celebrate America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and to showcase the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art. Materials include circulars, price lists, advertising cards, stationery, and pamphlets for goods and services, including washboards, ironing tables, saws, springs, sewing machines, mills, mowers, reapers, horse shoes, and hotel accommodations. Other documents include souvenir view books and guidebooks for visitors, maps, a Centennial Board of Finance letterhead, a Centennial award seal, programs, and admission tickets. Several of the items contain illustrations, such as views of the Centennial buildings, and depictions of products. Some advertisements promote foreign businesses from countries, including Belgium, Russia, Great Britain, Holland, Austria, France, Germany, and Spain., Approximately seventeen of the items include manuscript annotations of dates (e.g. "11.2.76" and "Nov 9/76"), possibly made by Centennial visitors to record dates of attendance at the fair.
