Title: Powers-Weightman-Rosengarten Co. Works, East Schuylkill Falls. Powers & Weightman, Manufacturing Chemists, Philadelphia. Established 1818
Description: Advertisement showing the large industrial complex, including warehouses, storage sheds, and a reservoir originally established in 1848 by Powers & Weightman. Several of the buildings contain working smokestacks. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the main entranceway and a number of others are visible within the complex. Train tracks run within and along the periphery of the plant. A locomotive with train cars, horse–drawn freight cars, and free standing freight cars are visible on the tracks. Fenced pasture land is visible in the background. Also contains two titled insets in the lower corners. "Tartaric and Citric Acid Department, Falls of Schuylkill" includes horse-drawn wagons arriving and crossing a small bridge in the foreground. "Laboratory for Fine Chemicals, Ninth and Parrish Streets" includes trains traveling in the foreground. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. Description: Die-cut celluloid bookmark advertising the Baltimore and Philadelphia Steamboat Company. Bookmark shaped and printed to represent a carp. The steamboat company, established in 1844 by John S. Shriver, originally hauled freight until the increased demand for passenger service circa 1876. Description: Advertisement for the Antikamnia Chemical Company established around 1890. Depicts the skull-headed company icon "Funny Bones," wearing glasses, attired in a suit, and holding an "AK" tablet in his hand, and shrugging. Antikamnia (opposed to pain) was a toxic and addictive medicine often mixed with codeine and quinine. Title: The studio, -- salesroom
Description: Advertising postcard showing an interior view of the salesroom of William Rau's photographic studio at 238-244 South Camac Street. Salesroom features framed photographs showing a variety of Rau's work including two views from his Pennsylvania Railroad commission "On the Conemaugh" and "Washington's Crossing, above Trenton" ; a large cabinet probably containing stereoviews; two card files; and other office furniture. Two albums, one containing photographs of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, are displayed on the cabinet top.
