Images include the front and rear facade of the Ashwood residence and landscape views of the grounds; Paxson's Mill and Dam in Radnor; J. Description: Scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, photographs, ephemera and prints predominantly issued between the 1930s and 1970s documenting exhibitions, loans, collections, events and the history of the Library Company. Clippings include newspaper articles about a loan of American political cartoons to the Toledo Museum (1936); exhibitions commemorating the centenary of librettist W.S. Gilbert (1936); the tercentenary of Swedish Settlement (1938); and the library's African American history collection (1971). Columns also describe the presentation of the Christopher Sower library (1909); the return in 1876 of a book 99 years overdue since the American Revolution (1938); the demolition of the Library's Juniper and Locust streets building for a parking lot (1939); and the vandalism of the former Ridgway Building at 901-933 Broad Street (1969). Photographs predominantly depict the exteriors and reading rooms of the library buildings at Fifth and Library Streets, Juniper and Locust Streets, and Broad Street (Ridgway Building). Description: Scrapbook containing portraiture, predominately patriotic envelopes, of Civil War military and political figures. Majority of the envelopes issued by prolific New York publisher Charles Magnus, with several from his series "Generals of the Potomac Army" and "Heroes of Successful Expeditions." Also contains portrait prints, stationery, and non-portrait and ephemera materials, including newspaper clippings, manuscript letters, autographs, playbills, an illustrated songsheet, and a performance program. Several of the portrait prints were originally published in the 1861-1863 volumes of "The Rebellion Record" edited by Frank Moore., Majority of clippings detail the controversial death and funeral of Col. Edward D. Baker. Manuscript letters include correspondence from 28th PA Regt. Beck Band musician, Samuel A. Murray to John McAllister, Jr. about collecting Southern Civil War relics and letters. Also includes W.S. Hancock correspondence denying a citizen's pass to cross military lines. Songsheet, performance program, and majority of playbills relate to special performances, including an 1862 Washington birthday commemorative program, at the 28th Pennsylvania Regiment military camp. Description: Primarily studio portraits and snapshots of members of the Venning line of the middle-class Philadelphia African American family descended from the 19th-century white South Carolinian Richard Walpole Cogdell (1787-1866), and Sarah Martha Sanders (1815-1850), a Black enslaved woman. Includes professionally photographed group portraits depicting the family's participation in the Philadelphia African American music community of the early 20th century, including: the Mendelssohn Singing Society; Sid Stratton's Orchestra; the Treble Clef Mandolin and Guitar Club; and the Soap Box Social, a minstrel club associated with the African American political club, Citizen's Republican Club. Other formal portraiture includes the graduation portrait for the South Philadelphia High School for Girls class of 1921, including Lillie Venning and contralto Marian Anderson, and a group portrait of the Citizens Republican Club (ca. 1910).
