Description: Advertisement depicting a view looking toward the rear of the busy store. Shows bookcases filled with texts mounted atop cabinets and drawers lining the walls. Stacks of books and eight busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a "Gifts" case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. The booth, enclosed with ornate white iron work, contains advertising text that reads "A Gift with Each Book Sold at Retail Price." Description: Certificate containing vignettes and graphic elements related to agriculture. Vignettes at the bottom of the print show clusters of farm animals, including cows, pigs, and fowl; a man providing a bowl of feed to a couple of horses with a foul in a fenced pasture in front of a house; and a farmer plowing his field. Graphic elements in the upper corners include farm implements, tools, and equipment, including shovels, pitchforks, sickles, rakes, and a grinding implement. Description: Advertisement in Spanish, English, and French for the Bush Hill Iron Works originally established by Oliver Evans in 1809 and operated by Neall, Matthews & Moore 1846-1854. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Also shows a man entering the "Neall & Matthews" office. Image surrounded by decorative border. Contains several lines of advertising text below the titles promoting the products of the works, including cylinders, steam engines, boilers, mills, pans, hammers, anvils, and castings; the efficiency of two Air-Furnaces to fill roll orders "without delay"; and "all orders for machinery or castings thankfully received and promptly executed." James Neal retired in 1854 and Matthew and Moore carried on the business until 1870 when James Moore assumed sole proprietorship. Title: T. Sinclair & Co. lithographers Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. Description: Advertisement showing the "Spring Garden Tube Works" on Vine Street above Twentieth Street. Signage reading "S. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the manufactory at 1601 North Sixth Street for the firm founded by Benjamin J. and J. Lewis Crew and Stephen R. Rogers in 1860. Shop laborers load barrels onto a horse-drawn cart parked in front of the laboratory and unstack and shift crates and barrels that line the sidewalks. A company horse-drawn wagon passes in the street. Other traffic includes horse-drawn drays, a "Frankford & Southwark" street car, and elegantly-attired women and men crossing from and to street corners. Also shows a company wagon entering a bay and a dray entering a storage yard at the factory. Surrounding buildings, including probably the warehouse at the lumber yard of Jacob and George A. Description: Beautiful, elaborate advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer showing a ballroom scene set within a monument designed as a stage surrounded by floral ornaments. Shows couples attired in evening wear introducing themselves, conversing, and dancing in the ballroom. Two women hold fans. Chandelier lampposts and red drapery frame the scene. Two archways showing vistas to outdoor sceneries of trees and urns of greenery flank the monument. Loose, bundled, and cornucopias of flowers, encase the monument. Also contains two poles entwined with banners on the outer sides. Banners are inscribed with the names of scented flowers, including camellia, lilac, magnolia, tea rose, sweet clover, patchouli, and musk. Description: Membership certificate for members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows containing a decorative border of Gothic elements and emblems, vignettes, and scenes representing the degrees, tenants, and activities of the benevolent organization. Scenes show odd fellows assisting the indisposed and enfeebled, tutoring children, and assisting in a burial. Title: Roussel's premium perfumery Manufactured by X. Bazin, successor to E. Roussel. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing advertising text surrounded by an ornate flowery border. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Bazin served as the lab director for perfumer Eugene Roussel from circa 1840 to circa 1849 when he assumed proprietorship of the business. Bazin continued to use Roussel's name until circa 1853. Description: Honorary membership certificate containing vignettes of Weccacoe Fire Company engine houses and firefighting equipment between 1840 and 1860 within a decorative border adorned with filigree, bugles, and axes. American flags, laurel wreaths, and an eagle with a shield surmounts the text in the central portion of the certificate, below which is an 1860 view of the fire company’s engine house on the 100 block of Queen Street in Southwark. Fire fighters and wagons loaded with equipment congest the street in the foreground. A large American flag flies atop the roof of the engine house. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Two bales of wheat clustered with doves, a bee hive, and gardening tools form another pictorial element. The East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society was established in 1860 in Norristown following a split from the Montgomery County Agricultural Society. Description: Commemorative print containing a pasted lithograph of an exterior view of the Presbyterian church with colonnade portico (811 N. 7th Street). Lithograph partially printed over and surrounded by an ornate chromolithgraphed decorative border and pasted letterpress cutouts. Shows pedestrian traffic in front of the church built 1853-1854 under the supervision of the building committee of Rev. Dr. J. F. Berg, George Hawes, D. W. C. Moore, and Charles Collins Jr. Pedestrians include a man carrying a bundle on his shoulder and a boy playing with a hoop. Congregation organized in 1852 from members withdrawn from the First German Reformed Church. Chromolithographed border comprised of a wreath of different flowers and cutouts with gold printed letterpress text describing, and listing prominent figures in, the history of the church., Text cut-outs surrounded by chromolithographed bead-like strands. Information includes the date of the organization (March 29, 1852), laying of the corner stone April 21, 1853), opening of basement, lecture, and Sabbath School rooms (October 25, 1852), and dedication of the church (March 5, 1864); names of the first pastor (Joseph F. Berg, D.D.), organist (Charles Collins Jr.), board president (Albert Rorer), secretary (D. W. C. Moore), sexton (J. Collom), superintendent of Sabbath Schools (Charles Santee), and treasurer (John Ross); the list of officers (i.e., elders, deacons, trustees) in 1853 and 1857; "Contents of the Corner Stone, Deposited April 21, 1853, including a constitution of the church and newspaper accounts of the laying of the cornerstone; "Ceremonies at Laying the Corner Stone April 21, 1853"; the names of the builders, carpenters J. & G.
