Title: The Smile that was childlike
Description: Print depicting characters from Bret Harte’s 1870 poem “Plain Language from Truthful James” later reprinted as “The Heathen Chinee.” The narrative of the poem focuses on two white men, Bill Nye and “Truthful James,” and a Chinese man named Ah Sin playing the card game Euchre. Bill and James believe Ah Sin is “childlike” and does not comprehend how to play the game. The print shows Bill and James standing in the left on a dirt road and showing playing cards to Ah Sin, who looks on with his hands in his pockets. Ah Sin is depicted in racist caricature and wears a queue hairstyle, a conical hat, gold hoop earrings, a blue tunic and pants, and cloth, slip-on shoes. In the background are mountains and a partial view of a cabin. Later in the poem’s narrative, Bill cheats playing the game by having cards up his sleeve. When Ah Sin plays a card that James already has, it is discovered that Ah Sin is also cheating with decks of cards hidden in his sleeves. Bill proceeds to fight Ah Sin. Bret Harte’s poem “Plain Language from Truthful James,” satirizing anti-Chinese sentiment, was originally published in the Overland Monthly Magazine in September, 1870. Description: Advertisement showing the busy interior of the saloon and concert hall built 1857 on the 500 block of North Third Street. Men, women, and children patrons sit, drink, read, approach, and are served at several tables in front of a stage. In the foreground, men gather near two bars on each side of the saloon. The bar in the right of the image contains a soda fountain. Each is manned by bartenders and is stocked with bottles of liquor. A framed painting, a wall clock, and a large mirror decorate the areas. Description: Collection of stationery containing patriotic designs often used on patriotic envelopes, with a majority including a title, slogan, and/or verse. Designs predominately include views of regiment camps; images of soldiers, including battle and camp life scenes; patriotic symbols including flags, eagles, bells, shields, stars and the figure of liberty; portraiture of historic and military figures; and basic designs including stripes, colored edges, and lined borders. Unique designs with assigned LCP numbers include an untitled regiment view showing the soldiers playing baseball, possibly at Abner Doubleday's camp (RE-LCP 35); a view of Poughkeepsie from 1854 (SC-NW-LCP-3); the New York funeral procession for Abraham Lincoln on April 25, 1865 (SC-NW-LCP-4); two designs published by J.W. Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Description: Ticket depicting a festive scene for the Philadelphia Carnival Bal Masque organized by the Maennechor Society, the city's German singing society. Scene depicts a man masquerading as a jester in a red costume breaking out of an egg-shaped prop (adorned with the date and location of the event) that lies on the back of a man costumed as a clown. The clown is attired in a white ensemble and is prone, lying on his stomach, and propped up by his hands. The clown wears a pointed hat, ruffled collar, wide-sleeved shirt, and blue-striped pants. Description: First cutout is captioned "1800" and is within a border containing a banner reading "Incorporated 1832 Charter Perpetual." Shows several volunteers, attired in long coats and top hats, operating a hand-pumper engine near a pond of water and water pump during the day. Other men operate the water pump and use buckets to collect water from the pond as flames shoot from two windows of a building in the background. Two volunteer firefighters, including Joseph Tipler of the United States Engine Company, in uniform flank the scene. The second firefighter's shirt and hat is adorned with "1." Second cutout is captioned "1866" and is surrounded by a border of filigree. Shows several volunteers, during the evening, using steam engines to battle the blaze of two multi-story buildings. Title: Mower U.S.A. General Hospital, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia
Description: View showing the Civil War hospital, built in 1862 after the designs of Philadelphia architect John McArthur, Jr. between Stenton, Germantown, Springfield and Abington avenues opposite the Chestnut Hill track of the Reading Railroad (7900-8000 blocks Stenton Avenue). Includes rows of tents; drilling troops; civilian visitors; mess tents; and soldiers attending kettles over campfires. Also shows, in the distant background, the steeple of Christ Church and the flags of Dupont Cannon House and Dell Battery. Contains the names of the officers in charge of the camp and a key to the tents of the attending companies printed below the image.
