Title: Philadelphia Carnival. Easter Monday Night April 18th 1881 at the Academy of Music
Description: Ticket depicting a festive scene for the Philadelphia Carnival Bal Masque organized by the Maennechor Society, the city's German singing society. Scene depicts a man masquerading as a jester in a red costume breaking out of an egg-shaped prop (adorned with the date and location of the event) that lies on the back of a man costumed as a clown. The clown is attired in a white ensemble and is prone, lying on his stomach, and propped up by his hands. The clown wears a pointed hat, ruffled collar, wide-sleeved shirt, and blue-striped pants. Another jester, attired in a red head dress, blue shirt, and tan leggings, stands and watches to the left of the cracking egg from which his fellow jester propels himself. Above the standing jester, a putti pulls up a green drape with gold trim. In the right, in front of the clown and jester in red, a man with long blonde hair and costumed in colonial-era attire bows. He holds a tri-corn hat in his hand and wears a dark-brown coat, blue pantaloons, red shoes, and a flowing gold cape. In the right background, stands a group of male and female spectators costumed as a renaissance man, scullery maid, bald-headed clown, wizard, knight, and Quaker couple. The Maennerchor Society's Carnival Bal Masque began about 1864 and continued throughout at least the 1890s. Description: View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Men and women converse near the entrance to the complex in the foreground, as a horse-drawn cart exits the compound. In the background, a locomotive travels past the complex (right) and a laborer works with a team of horses that pull several railroad carts loaded with goods (left) on the series of tracks surrounding the complex. View also shows adjacent lots of pasture land. In the lower corners are two vignettes depicting exterior views of the tartaric and citric acid department and the laboratory for fine chemicals at Ninth and Parrish Streets. Predominately depicts the open land surrounding the Aramingo Canal, Reading Railroad Depot between Lehigh Avenue and Somerset Street, and the Philadelphia, Trenton, and New York Railroad line. A few dwellings, churches, and other structures comprise the landscape with clusters and heavier congestion of buildings visible near Columbia Street. Title: View of the reception of the 29th Regiment, P. V., at Philadelphia
Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Description: Print containing an exterior and interior view of the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon situated near the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad station, the transportation hub between the North and the South. Description: Print containing an exterior view and three titled interior views of the saloon and hospital of the volunteer relief agency located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Hundreds of soldiers line up to enter and depart the "Hot Coffee and Refreshment" and "Water" stand and "Dining Saloon Free for Volunteers"; officers direct foot traffic onto the train; and other soldiers enter the adjacent "Post Office" and are greeted by women in front of a row of adjoining row homes.
