Description: View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Title: Hagar & Campbell's Dime Museum, Ninth & Arch Sts. Opens Monday September 3d 1883
Description: Lively advertising print for the dime museum operated by W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell 1883-1885. Shows throngs of people entering the mansard-roofed building, heavily adorned in signage and over 40 pictures of the museum's performers, at the northwest corner of Ninth and Arch Streets. Signs read "Specially Adapted for Ladies & Children: Open Daily from 1 to 10 P.M."; "Curiosities Constantly Arriving From All Parts of the World"; and "Philadelphia's Pleasure Palace Containing Countless Curiosities / Peerless Parlor Peformances." Other signs announce the hours of operation, the museum's purpose for the "instruction and amusement" of ladies and children, and the admission price - 10 cents. Performer's pictures primarily depict human curiosities and include tattooed men and women, a bearded lady, clowns, a two-headed woman, little people, an armless man, a man eating a slate, exotic and native costumed figures, as well as a magician and a ventriloquist. Graphics also show exotic animals and birds. Building also adorned with flags promoting the museum and its attractions, including "birds, beasts, and mechanical marvels." In the street, three street cars (nos. 44, 33, and 26) and one wagon, advertising Hagar & Campbell's, travel and stop in front of the museum. Wagon is composed of billboards illustrated with an image of seven women with floor-length hair and captioned "Seven Wonders of the World.", Also shows adjacent buildings, a crowd of people at the side of the museum, and pedestrians and passersby in the street, on the sidewalk, and near and looking at the street vehicles. Description: Trade card for the Boston pistol manufacturer containing a comic image titled "When the Swallows Homeward Fly." Shows a man, a bib at his neck, eating from plates with a roast and a whole chicken. The large-eyed man places a spoon of food into his very wide mouth. Also contains an image of a $5.00 "Pope's Rifle Air Pistol," advertising text, and "A Few of the Many Testimonials" printed on the verso. Advertising text includes details about the adjustable gun stock, ease of loading for a "lady or boy," and additional paraphernalia (darts, slugs, and ramrod claw wrench). Title: Mr. & Mrs. Jay Rial with Rial & Draper's Ideal Uncle Tom's Cabin
Description: Vignette from an advertisement for the touring stage company's production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Contains bust-length portraits of Jay Rial, wearing a beard and attired in a white collared shirt, a brown tie, and brown jacket, and Louise Rial, wearing her hair in curls and attired in a black dress with a gold brooch and a red shawl. Also depicted are brown dogs in recline flanking the portraits of the Rials, a miniature view of a plantation house, and palm leaves. Jay Rial, a New York theatrical manager, began tours of his production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" circa 1881. The production was associated with novel features of live dogs and donkeys and props, such as floating cakes of ice, and was purported to have earned $1,000,000 by the end of its run. Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Pier 45" and factory of the firm at North Delaware Avenue. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Description: Trade card containing two panels and depicting a contrived, racist scene of two African American women domestics talking to each other from the kitchens of the respective, separate homes in which they work. The women are portrayed with caricaturized features and speak in the vernacular. They are attired in head coverings, sheath dresses with rolled-up sleeves, aprons, stockings, and slipper shoes. The depicted kitchens contain a sink, pans stored on hooks or a shelf, and a stove. In the left panel, the woman frowns and holds a kettle in one hand and the side of her skirt in the other. She stands "like a monument" on a floor "painted tree days now" and marked with her footprints. In the background, a white man, his mouth open in a shocked expression, and attired in a suit opens the door to the kitchen. In the right panel, the woman dances with one leg raised and her hands on her hips on a floor with "hard 'nuf" Granite Paint. Description: Paper doll of an unclothed figure of a young Black girl with moveable limbs. The girl is depicted with short, cropped, tightly curled hair, auburn eyes, and slightly smiling. A blue-beaded string necklace adorns her neck. She also wears white, above-the-ankle length socks and black "Mary Jane" shoes. The articulated limbs are attached by brass brads to a white cardboard torso, likely not the original. About the late 1880s, Littauer & Boysen (established circa 1882), a premier German chromolithographer of novelties, began to print articulated dolls for the paper box company. Dennison sold the German firm's dolls to further market its special line of tissue/crepe paper as doll's clothing. Description: Trade card depicting a racist, comic, genre scene to promote the Co-operative Dress Association established by journalist and lecturer Kate Fields in 1881. Shows an older African American boy, portrayed with large eyes, nose, lips, and ears, in a hive eating honey comb as a bear enters from behind him. The boy, attired in a collared red shirt with the sleeves rolled up and blue pants rolled to the knees, sits, left knee up and right leg out, on a mound and to the left of a stack of comb. Description: Advertisement showing an exterior view of the brewery complex operated as Peter Schemm & Son 1887-1908 that was originally built in 1855 and expanded between 1885 and 1887. The depicted red brick buildings include the brew house, storerooms, office building, and carriage house. The roofs are adorned with a cupola, smoke stacks, an American flag, and a weather vane. One building also contains a date marker (1885). Pedestrians, including boys in baseball uniforms and a family, walk in front of the brewery.
