The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts.", Advertising text on verso: 31st. - View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Within the grounds, visitors stroll on the paths between and enter the several exhibition buildings, including the Main Building (center), Restaurant, House of Public Comfort, Carriage and Wagon House, and Poultry House. Agricultural implements, fountains, and shrubbery adorn the grounds. In the background, the cattle sheds, rows of horse stalls, and the Executive Offices line the outskirts of the grounds in back of which trains on the Connecting Railroad and Pennsylvania Rail Railroad tracks travel past. - Hagar & Campbell's Dime Museum, Ninth & Arch Sts. Opens Monday September 3d 1883
- Description
- Lively advertising print for the dime museum operated by W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell 1883-1885. Shows throngs of people entering the mansard-roofed building, heavily adorned in signage and over 40 pictures of the museum's performers, at the northwest corner of Ninth and Arch Streets. Signs read "Specially Adapted for Ladies & Children: Open Daily from 1 to 10 P.M."; "Curiosities Constantly Arriving From All Parts of the World"; and "Philadelphia's Pleasure Palace Containing Countless Curiosities / Peerless Parlor Peformances." Other signs announce the hours of operation, the museum's purpose for the "instruction and amusement" of ladies and children, and the admission price - 10 cents. Performer's pictures primarily depict human curiosities and include tattooed men and women, a bearded lady, clowns, a two-headed woman, little people, an armless man, a man eating a slate, exotic and native costumed figures, as well as a magician and a ventriloquist. Graphics also show exotic animals and birds. Building also adorned with flags promoting the museum and its attractions, including "birds, beasts, and mechanical marvels." In the street, three street cars (nos. 44, 33, and 26) and one wagon, advertising Hagar & Campbell's, travel and stop in front of the museum. Wagon is composed of billboards illustrated with an image of seven women with floor-length hair and captioned "Seven Wonders of the World.", Also shows adjacent buildings, a crowd of people at the side of the museum, and pedestrians and passersby in the street, on the sidewalk, and near and looking at the street vehicles. Print also contains portraits of owners W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell in the upper corners. By 1884, Campbell and Hagar were officers in the Barnum and London show managing "Privileges." - Album containing 37 lithographic illustrations documenting the Philadelphia brewing complex on Thirty-second Street between Jefferson, Master and Thompson Streets, including exterior and interior views of individual buildings within the complex and detailed scenes of laborers operating equipment, transporting the finished product to and from railroad stations, and loading it onto ships. Shows exterior and interior views of the office building on Master Street; exterior views of the brew house and milling department, machine repair shop and fermenting houses; interior views of refrigerating machines, the first and second floors of the brew house, fermenting room, beer storage, cooper shops, racking room, wash house, shipping department, boiler house, pump room, electric light machines, machine repair shop, the ale and porter brewery and bottling house; and modes of transport including a refrigerating car, delivery wagon and locomotive. Other plates depict out-of-state depots and offices in Washington D.C.; Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida; and Trenton, Sea Isle City, and Atlantic City, New Jersey and commemorative illustrations of the company's first-place winnings at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 and Paris Exposition in 1878., The partnership of Bergner & Engel was formed in 1870 at the brewery of Bergner (erected 1857-1858) following the dissolution of the partnership of brewers Wolf & Engel. At this time, Bergner & Engel was one of the largest breweries in the country and had an international reputation. - Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. Tygert and Penrose Allen about 1889, also operated an office at 2 Chestnut Street. - Advertisement showing the busy "Pier 45" and factory of the firm at North Delaware Avenue. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Names include Walter C. of Burlington, Sherman, Wilson, Willie Paxson of Philadelphia, Minerva, Samuel Miller, Estelle (built by Pusey & Jones, delivered 1884 to Paxson), and Saml. C. Bougher. In the background, the factory buildings, connected by an overpass, are visible neighbored by the B&O and P.R.R. freight depots, a pier covered in barrels and bales of wood, and other surrounding buildings. Also shows a locomotive at the P.R.R. freight depot, smokestacks, and carts departing from the Paxson pier under the overpass. Also contains a bust portrait of Paxson, and two lists of 18 types of sand, lead and facings available from the firm, printed below the image. Products include Lumberton Sand, Albany Sand, Crescent Sand, Fire Sand, Silica Sand, Columbo Lead, American Lead, Machinery Facing, and Pipe Blacking. Shows upright pianos lining the walls and baby grand pianos displayed down the center of the room. Patrons mill the aisles created by the display of the pianos. A woman, possibly a clerk, sits at a baby grand at the end of the row of instruments and talks with a couple standing next to her. Framed signage is displayed on the wall, including one reading “Steinway & Sons. - Advertisement showing an exterior view of the brewery complex operated as Peter Schemm & Son 1887-1908 that was originally built in 1855 and expanded between 1885 and 1887. The depicted red brick buildings include the brew house, storerooms, office building, and carriage house. The roofs are adorned with a cupola, smoke stacks, an American flag, and a weather vane. One building also contains a date marker (1885). Pedestrians, including boys in baseball uniforms and a family, walk in front of the brewery. Workers convene near the entrance and handle horses at and depart with drays and wagons at driveways and cartways of the complex. A laborer pushes a handcart past several large barrels lining the sidewalk near an idle truck and a man on horseback riding in the street. A Schemm delivery wagon loaded with barrels drives past the brewery on Poplar Street across from street cars approaching and departing from the adjacent block, West College Avenue. At the opposite corner, pedestrians walk past a curved brick wall behind which a tree stands and a couple in the street wave to a male passenger at the front of the approaching street car. Neighboring buildings are visible in the background. Also contains an inset titled “City Office, 238 Race St.” showing a patron entering the building with signage advertising “Office of Schemm’s Brewery” and “C.A. - Advertisement showing a parade float, surrounded by sharply-dressed children, processing down the block with the "T.M. Harris & Co". multi-storied building at 821 Cherry. The float carries a large-model size Standard Tip shoe on which a toddler is seated and holding a Harris shoe. The children accompanying the vehicle play musical instruments, hold banners, and carry ribbons marked "Stand Tip." Two older girls flank and clasp one hand of the other over the float as three woman, including one attired as a nurse who holds a banner, follow the procession. The banners are illustrated with the company trademarks that advertise "Warranted Double Toe" and "Highest Grade." Spectators cheer from the windows of the company building that contains a cupola adorned with a weather vane. - Bird's eye view showing the grounds of the club founded in 1874 in West Philadelphia. In the center of the fenced-in grounds, members engage in a cricket match in front of the club house and an auxiliary building. Clusters of spectators watch the match and arrive by foot, coach, wagon, and bicycle. In the left, a bowler practices his throw in a netted area. In the background, people engage in matches on a series of tennis courts separated from the cricket field by a row of trees. Trees, a red brick building, dirt roads, and pastures surround the grounds. A horse-drawn buggy and street car travel around the club and a locomotive passes nearby.
