Title: Henry Adolph, manufacturer of furniture wholesale and retail, warerooms no. 36 North Second St., one door above the Christ Church Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the exterior of the furniture warerooms near Christ Church (22-34 N. 2nd St.). Clusters of people admire the furniture displayed in the windows of the storefront as patrons enter the building. The store is heavily adorned with signage and an American flag. Men, women, and children, including a man pushing a handcart, walk on the bustling sidewalk. A woman with a girl, and a delivery boy, cross the street near the "No. 21 Exchange & Richmond" streetcar, a "H. Adolph" delivery wagon, and another laborer pushing a handcart. Description: Advertisement containing an allegorical scene surrounded by a floral border. Scene shows a child asleep in her bed labeled "The Dream of Heaven" as angels, including one holding a book of "wisdom" and a basket of fruits hovers near her on a cluster of clouds. Also contains several lines of advertising text on the verso promoting the preparedness of the establishment to "execute" all kinds of lithographic drawings at the "shortest notice" at prices "corresponding to the style of work." Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the manufactory at 1601 North Sixth Street for the firm founded by Benjamin J. and J. Lewis Crew and Stephen R. Rogers in 1860. Shop laborers load barrels onto a horse-drawn cart parked in front of the laboratory and unstack and shift crates and barrels that line the sidewalks. A company horse-drawn wagon passes in the street. Other traffic includes horse-drawn drays, a "Frankford & Southwark" street car, and elegantly-attired women and men crossing from and to street corners. Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Description: Honorary membership certificate containing vignettes of Weccacoe Fire Company engine houses and firefighting equipment between 1840 and 1860 within a decorative border adorned with filigree, bugles, and axes. American flags, laurel wreaths, and an eagle with a shield surmounts the text in the central portion of the certificate, below which is an 1860 view of the fire company’s engine house on the 100 block of Queen Street in Southwark. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. Description: Certificate containing vignettes and graphic elements related to agriculture. Vignettes at the bottom of the print show clusters of farm animals, including cows, pigs, and fowl; a man providing a bowl of feed to a couple of horses with a foul in a fenced pasture in front of a house; and a farmer plowing his field. Graphic elements in the upper corners include farm implements, tools, and equipment, including shovels, pitchforks, sickles, rakes, and a grinding implement. Description: Membership certificate for members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows containing a decorative border of Gothic elements and emblems, vignettes, and scenes representing the degrees, tenants, and activities of the benevolent organization. Scenes show odd fellows assisting the indisposed and enfeebled, tutoring children, and assisting in a burial. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. Description: View showing visitors of all ages in the Assembly Room being used as an exhibit gallery. Men, women, and children promenade, converse, and admire the artifacts that adorn the room with a parquet floor. Framed artwork, predominately from the Charles Wilson Peale portrait collection in addition to Henry Inman’s portrait painting of William Penn, and Thomas Sully’s portrait painting of Lafayette, line the paneled walls. Under a chandelier, in the rear center of the room stands William Rush’s wood statue of George Washington (carved 1815, installed 1824). To the right, a stuffed bald eagle sits atop the Liberty Bell (installed 1852). The bell is displayed on a pedestal adorned with fasces, a banner, and shield and stands near the "Rising Sun" chair, one of a number of chairs lining the room, which was used by George Washington as he presided over the Constitutional Convention. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story brick and granite building adorned with a sign reading "Blacking" on its roof at 108, i.e., 138-140 North Front Street. A patron opens the entrance door of the storefront as he peers at a large illustrated print on display in an adjacent window. Above the window adorned with the print (illustrated with a man, boy, and dog), a couple is visible in an open double-sided glass door on the second floor. In front of the building, a laborer unloads a horse-drawn dray as a family in winter attire approaches from a nearby corner. Also shows a hoist on the side of the storefront and partial views of neighboring buildings. Mason & Co. occupied the building following its completion in 1851 and tenanted the site until 1919.
