- Description
- Portrait photograph showing two African American men, side-by-side, attired in suits, as well as top hats with advertising text for Charles S. Higgins Company soap. One hat reads "Try it" and the other reads "Higgins German Laundry soap is the best." One man holds a swagger stick and the other a walking cane, and both stand in front of a backdrop depicting a bucolic mountain scene. Charles S. Higgins Company, established by Higgins's father W. B. Higgins in Brooklyn in 1846, manufactured "German Laundry soap" beginning around 1860, when Charles assumed the business. The laundry soap was packaged in a wrapper illustrated with an African American woman washing in a tub. By the early 1890s Charles S. Higgins left the firm still operated under his name and formed Higgins Soap Company. - Full-length group portrait depicting three African American Union soldiers, attired in uniform, standing with bayoneted Springfield rifle muskets and non-commissioned officer swords in hand. The soldiers include a sergeant (center left) who wears a regular belt plate, three chevrons on his sleeve, a kepi with a tarred cover, and a non-commissioned officer baldrick on his sword. The African American private (center) wears an infantry bugle and brass insignia on top of his kepi. The private (right) wears an unadorned kepi. In the left, is a white man soldier, probably a junior officer, attired in a great coat and slouch hat and holding possibly an 1850 foot officer's sword. - Abolitionist portrait of the propagandized emancipated enslaved children, Isaac White and Rosina Downs, standing, arm-in-arm. Isaac has brown skin, and wears a shirt jacket, pants, and broad tie. He has his left hand tucked into his shirt jacket. Rosina has fair skin, and wears an off-the-shoulder, calf-length dress, cinched at the waist, and with stripe details on the neckline and skirt. She also wears pantaloons. Freed by Union General Butler in New Orleans, the children toured through the North with other emancipated enslaved people, and Colonel George H. - Collection of Civil War photographic views predominately of cartes de visite and stereographs from Levy & Cohen's "Views of the Rebel Capital and its Environs"; Mathew Brady's "Album Gallery" or "Photographic Views of the War"; Alexander Gardner's "Illustrations of the War"; and E. & H. T. Anthony's "War for the Union" series. Majority of the photographs depict battlefields; military camps, fortifications, headquarters, depots and ruins; historic sites in Washington D.C.; Virginia and Georgia during Sherman's Expedition to South Carolina; the Virginia campaign from the Battle of Bull Run to the evacuation of Manassas; General McClellan's 1862 campaign on the Virginia Peninsula; General Pope's 1862 Campaign in Virginia; General McClellan's 1862 Campaign in Maryland; General Burnside and Hooker's 1862-1863 Campaign in Virginia; and General Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign. Images also show hospitals, prisons, battle mortalities, and cemeteries. Collection also includes a small number of unidentified views showing ruins of a battery; portraits of soldiers in formation and at leisure; soldiers maintaining cannons at batteries; a birds-eye view of city ruins; views of warehouses occupied by the military, possibly used as hospitals; and a camp scene, including soldiers' laundry drying on a haystack., Also contains a reproduction of a view of soldiers crossing a river by artist Alexander Lawrie; a carte de visite reproduction of a view of Camp Meigs, Philadelphia, Pa; and fourteen cartes de visite portraits of military officers issued as part of Brady's "National Portrait Gallery" as well as group and camp life portraits of officers, soldiers, and servants at Camp Cameron, D.C., Camp Winfield Scott, Foller's Farm, and Brandy Station in Va. One of Camp Cameron portraits includes an African American boy shining shoes. (1862); Belle Plain, Va., including the Camp of the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry (1863) and Quartermaster Depot (1864); North Anna River, Va.
