Title: Wetherill & Brothers white lead manufactory & chemical works, corner of 12th & Cherry streets, Philadelphia
Description: View predominately showing the yard of the complex built circa 1812-1813 for the earliest American white lead manufactory founded by Samuel Wetherill Jr. in the 1780s. Factory workers labor between a horse-drawn cart, and rows and stacks of crates, barrels, and vats, which cover the yard that is surrounded by buildings. Several smoke stacks adorn the roofs of the shops. Following the circa 1812 fire of the Wetherill white lead manufactory at Broad and Chestnut streets, the new factory was built at the northeast corner of 12th & Cherry streets, including the addition of a chemical manufactory. Title: The church in 13th Street above Market, Phila
Description: Exterior view of the front facade and flank of the Ninth Presbyterian Church showing well-dressed men, women and children entering the left and right entrances. The church, adorned with Gothic arched windows and details, was built circa 1815 on North Thirteenth Street with funds donated by Margaret Duncan to serve the poor and working class of Philadelphia. Originally named the Second Associate Reformed Church, the church was also commonly known as Margaret Duncan's Church or the Vow Church. Controversy over John Chambers appointment as a new minister of the church in the mid 1820s influenced his decision to form a new congregation with his supporters in 1830. They moved to the much larger First Independent Church at Broad and Sansom Streets. Title: The gold & silver artificers of Phila. In civic procession 22 Feb 1832
Description: Event lithograph showing the gold and silver artificers of Philadelphia on procession past the Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) for the centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington. Government officials and prominent citizens led the parade order, followed by the tradesmen, then the volunteer fire companies, and lastly the military. Shows the craftsmen, all attired in top hats and sashes, led by a parade marshall on horse-back. He is followed by a six-horse mounted team pulling a float carrying men operating and protecting a coin press. Two other men, probably the marshall's aids, on horseback, one on a rearing horse, flank the rear of the vehicle. Several rows of marching artisans follow the float led by an artificer carrying a large banner adorned with a bust portrait of Washington. The portrait is encircled by a wreath and bordered by an eagle that clasps a banner in his beak reading "Pater Patriae" [design on distributed coin]. Along the parade route, throngs of spectators watch from the steps of the bank, along the street, and from the second floor windows of businesses adjacent to the financial institution. Signage for "Thomas Fletcher, Manufacturer of Silver Plate and Jewelry"; "Fletcher & Gardiner"; and "Browne & Robb 132" adorn the storefronts. Merchandise is displayed in the windows of Fletcher & Gardiner. Spectators along the street include well-attired men, women, and children, including several boys who run to and gather in front of the float to retrieve freshly pressed coins being thrown from the vehicle. Many raise their arms and retrieve coins from the ground. Title: N. E. view of the old court house in Market Street Philada
Description: View showing the courthouse built 1707 by carpenter Samuel Powell, and adjoining market sheds built 1710, on North Second Street above Market Street. Broadsides adorn the facade of the building containing a balcony and bell tower. In front of the court house, market patrons and vendors, predominately women, tend to stands and mill in the street. Also shows neighboring buildings and the rear of a horse-drawn wagon traveling in the street past the shed. The court house was utilized as the town hall, seat of the Legislature, market house and the Pennsylvania statehouse until Independence Hall was opened in 1748. Description: Morphed view of the Gothic-style bank building, erected in 1808 after the designs of Benjamin Henry Latrobe at the southwest corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets. Shows the building projecting upward from the plane of the paper causing a cathedral like effect to the architecture. A gate, lawn, and trees surround the building. An outbuilding is visible on the property. Couples and a lady with a parasol stroll on the sidewalk. The Philadelphia Bank or Bank of Philadelphia (predecessor of the Philadelphia National Bank), formed in 1803, and was incorporated in 1804 as the unofficial bank of the commonwealth. The building was razed in 1836. Title: View of the glass works of T. W. Dyott at Kensington on the Delaware nr Philada
Description: View showing the premier glass works in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the buildings, including the factory adorned with the sign "T.W. Dyott's Glass Works," at the complex of the works. Smokestacks adorn all the buildings. Also shows a skiff docked near the factory and another sailing on the river. The works also contained a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles."
