Title: John Bull and the Nicaragua question John's duplicity and disregard of treaty obligations
Description: Cartoon criticizing Great Britain's support of the Costa Rican opposition to American pro-slavery filibuster and self-installed president of Nicaragua William Walker, as a violation of the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, which barred American and British development of Central America. Depicts a rotund John Bull, with a patch over one eye and guns strapped to his chest, trampling the "Clayton Bulwer Treaty." He hands a rifle to a Costa Rican man, attired in a straw hat, poncho, and torn and worn pants, who carries a dagger in his right hand and declares, "Death to Los Americanos!" Bull remarks to the Costa Rican that he "agreed not to meddle" and will help settle the "hash" of the filibuster, while under his breath he mutters "after we've settled their hash, I'll settle your hash." In the right is a chained and caged "Russian Bear," and on top of the cage is a "Turkey," symbolizing the nation (allusions to British success in the Crimean War). In the left, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, their several children playing beside and with them, mock the "fuss" that Emperor Napoleon III of France makes over his young son. Napoleon gushes that the child's "foot shall fit se Neck of France" as his son's white woman nanny, holding a bowl of "PAP" (i.e, political patronage), discusses the King's assistance to Costa Rica and her "diapering" of the "blessed baby." Description: Advertisement depicting a corner view of the three-building showroom and factory operated by the Schells from 1853 until 1856. J.E. Schell continued the business as J.E. Schell & Company starting in 1857. On Tenth Street, patrons enter the four-story storefront and mantle room adorned with signage and statuary displayed on a second floor veranda. At the corner, a coach waits, the disembarked African American man driver standing at the ready. Description: Racist advertisement promoting Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature, polishing a stove. Shows the African American man servant, barefoot and attired in a plaid, collared shirt and pants, kneeling before a stove with a brush in his left hand. On the floor in front of him is a glass of water, an open can of polish, and a box labeled, Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre or Pure Black Lead. In the right, a white woman stands wearing her brown hair in a bun and attired in an off-the-shoulder dress with a bow at the chest and lace sleeves. She looks toward the man and asks, “Uncle Tom whose blacking is that you are useing [sic].” He replies in the vernacular, “La Missey don’t you know dat -- dat is Wooten's Lustre." Description: Whimsical publisher's advertisement containing four vignettes in a fanciful border of food imagery surrounding a list of cookbook titles in German and English authored by Marianne Struf and the steward of the Union League, William Vollmer. Vignettes depict three quirky scenes representing agricultural work, hunting, fishing, and fine dining. Also contains a scene depicting four women peeling apples, mincing meat, and baking in a kitchen. Vignettes include an African American man waiter and an African American woman cook. Description: Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1856-1859 after the designs of John Notman at 200 South 19th Street. Includes the chancel; vestibules; towers; the center, South, and North galleries of pews; and a porch. Pews are printed with a row number, "value," "seats," and "rent." Values range from $1200 to $200 and pews 146 and 147 are annotated in ink: "3 for rent" and "1 for rent." In March 1859, an auction administered by M. Depicts several individual scenes occurring on an active street lined by businesses near a river. Description: Tradecard showing a view of the glue and animal product manufacturing complex for partners Charles Baeder, Charles Delany, and William Adamson at 1006 North Sixth Street. Complex contains several buildings and two courtyards. The two largest buildings contain several stories, receiving entrances, and cupolas. Laborers holding tools with handles work on the roof of a shed-like building in the center of the complex. Horse-drawn carts are visible in the yard. Also includes street traffic in the foreground. A horse-drawn omnibus, wagon, and men on horseback travel in front of the fenced manufactory. A Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad locomotive pulling one train car passes in the foreground. Description: Billhead for R. Garsed & Brother containing a view of the firm's textile mills built 1853 on the northwest corner of Ashland Street along Frankford Creek in Frankford. The mills include a small office building adjacent to a long single-story building with three portico entrances, a smokestack, and cupola adorned with a weather vane. The main building housed the spinning, carding, warping, and spreading rooms. Women stand in two of the portico entries, individuals walk on the grounds, and a “Wingohocking” horse-drawn wagon travels past the mill. Title: The great presidential race of 1856
Description: Cartoon ridiculing the Democratic and American (Know-Nothings) Party presidential candidates James Buchanan and Millard Fillmore by depicting them in a race to win the election of 1856. Depicts Buchanan having crashed his mount (i.e, running mate John C. Breckenridge depicted as a buck) into a rickety platform marked "Democratic Platform," Slavery," and "Cuba." An enslaved African American man, portrayed with racistly caricaturized features, and wearing shackles on his ankles and worn and torn clothes, shoes, and a hat, stands upon and ridicules the "Democratic Platform." Buchanan angrily replies, "You infernal Black Scoundrel, if it had not been for you and that cursed Slavery Plank that Scared and upset my Buck, I should have won this race certain." Following Buchanan is Fillmore using his running mate Andrew Jackson Donelson, depicted as a goose, as his mount. Fillmore, the American Party candidate, carries a "Know-Nothing" lamp and fears his loss will dissolve the Union. In the distance, the Republican candidate John C. Fremont pulls ahead to the cheers of many of the spectators. Brother Jonathan, (predecessor of Uncle Sam), stands on an observation or judging deck and carries a timer’s watch. Additional spectators include white men belittling Fillmore as "spineless" and a "goose," and a white boy holding a sign inscribed, "We Po'ked Em in 44; We Pierced Em in 52; and We'll 'Buck Em' in 56." Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Title: Elevation plan of Granite St. buildings and those connecting with Walnut, Dock and Front Streets
Description: Depicts three rows of elevations showing the basic architectural stylings of the twenty-three distinct Granite Street properties constructed by John Rice for Jesse Godley between 1849 and 1853. The first two rows show the front elevations of the north and south sides of Granite Street extending from Front to Dock Streets (100-127 Granite Street). The third row shows the east and west side elevations of Granite Street, including the underground storage vaults below the street and the front elevations of properties facing Front, Dock and Walnut Streets (200 block of South Front Street; 137-143 Dock Street; 100 block of Walnut Street). The plans include pre-consolidation property numbers; notes about properties that extend, and are accessible, from both Granite Street and Front, Walnut and Dock Streets; and pedestrian traffic, including laborers rolling barrels on the sidewalk, horse-drawn carts, and men and women walking on the sidewalks. Godley financed the "Granite Street Improvements" in anticipation of an increase in trade that the Central Railroad would bring to the area. Builders include John Rice, stone masons Lukens & Hutchinson, brick workers George R. Creely, and granite workers S.K. Hoxie, John C. Leiper, and William Keys. The innovative granite-covered storage vaults, twenty-four feet wide by three-hundred twenty-five feet long, were built under the street with a brick-arch arcade and for the joint use of tenants. Title: The state penitentiary, for the eastern district of Pennsylvania This institution known as "Cherry Hill State Prison" at Philadelphia, is the model prison of "The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline" or "Separate System" as it is called to distinguish it from "The Congregate." Each convict occupies a single cell or workshop, and is thus separated from all other convicts. The building was begun in 1822. The walls, 30 ft. high, 12 ft. thick at base, 2 ft. 9 in: at top, enclose a square plot of ten acres. There are 7 corridors of cells, capable of receiving 500 convicts. The average number confined annually is less than 300. Some cells are 11ft. 9 in. by 7 ft. 6 in. with yards attached, 15 ft. by 8 ft. Others are double this size, all lighted and warmed and ventilated.-Gas is introduced into the corridors. Heat by hot water thro' pipes. Water in each cell and other conveniences. Pardoned on August 7, 1849, he was sent to Eastern State again for murder on December 3, 1852. He served nearly eight years and was released on November 3, 1860. Cowperthaite was a weaver in prison. He was described by the prison chaplain as part of the "wowdy clubs of Skinners," with a the prevailing vice of intemperance and with a predominant passion for destructiveness. See N. K.
