Title: Do they miss me at home?
Description: Trimmed vignette showing a caricature of a young African American girl, possibly a satirical personification of the popular mid-19th century song of the same title. Depicts the girl, attired in a baby doll dress, her hair in short coils, and the fingers of one hand in her mouth as, in the other, she holds the string of a rolling pull toy horse visible behind her. Published in 1852 and composed by S. M. Grannis with lyrics by Caroline Atherton Mason, "Do they Miss Me at Home" was written in the voice of a homesick girl away at school. The song remained popular through the Civil War when translated to the voice of soldiers. Bufford, later J. H. Title: Emancipation Freedom for all, both black and white!
Description: Print depicting the Emancipation Proclamation for both African Americans and whites including equal opportunity to education. Depicts Lincoln raising his right hand and holding the "Emancipation Proclamation" in his left hand in the center between a poor white family and an enslaved African American family. Both families, attired in torn and worn clothing, stand and kneel as they hold their clasped hands up toward Lincoln, who treads upon broke shackles and a serpent. A "Spelling Book" lies on the ground near them. In the background, Union soldiers stop a white man enslaver from whipping a shackled and enslaved African American woman and children enter "Public School, No. 1." Title: Humboldt Monument in Fairmount Park, designed by Collins & Autenrieth, for the Humboldt Festival Committee
Description: View showing a rendering of the monument, surrounded by trees and bushes, to be erected in honor of German natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt in East Fairmount Park. Monument composed of a bust of Humboldt resting on a column pedestal adorned with lion-mouthed fountains and two cherubs holding a globe marked "Cosmos" (representing Humboldt's 5-volume work about his knowledge of the earth). A stone canopy with benches protects the monument under and near which a lady and two gentlemen stand. Also shows a short level of stairs leading to the monument. The cornerstone of the monument, commissioned by German societies, was laid facing the entrance to Girard Avenue Bridge during a celebration of the centennial of the birth of Humboldt on September 13, 1869. Title: View of the farm where the murder of the Deering [sic] Family was committed by the fiend Antoine Probst on April 7th 1866
Description: News print showing the farm at Jones Lane in South Philadelphia of the Philadelphia family murdered by their farmhand Anton Probst on April 7, 1866. The victims included Christopher Dearing, aged 38 years; his wife, Julia Dearing, aged 45 years; their son, John Dearing, aged 8 years; their son, Thomas Dearing, aged 6 years; their daughter, Anna Dearing, aged 4 years; their daughter, Emily Dearing, aged 2 years; family friend Elizabeth Dolan, aged 25 years; and fieldhand Cornelius Cary, aged 17 years. Depicts (left to right) "1. The Haystack" where the headless body of the first murdered, field hand Cary, was hidden; "2. The Dwelling" Probst ransacked for money and in which he shaved, changed, napped, and ate after the murder; "3. The Stable" where Probst fed the animals before his departure; and "4. The Barn" where the family was lured one by one, killed, and discovered by neighbors a few days later. Individuals walk the property, including spectators and police, and a cow stands across from two policemen in a field tilled for planting in the foreground. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Title: The horrible murder of the Dearing Family The above picture is a correct representation of the interior of the the barn and appearance of the murdered family as sketched by the artist shortly after the discovery of the murder, the murderer is in the act of dragging the bodies of Mrs. Dearing and the children into the adjoining corn crib, seen through the window to the right of the picture. The goateed murderer drags the boy by his feet, face up, from the pile of corpses laying on the hay covered floor. Display sponsors include the Fire Department, First Presbyterian Church, "Women's Mission" and the Penn Relief Association as well as local neighborhoods, towns, and counties including West Philadelphia, Germantown, Montgomery County, Chester County, Bethlehem, and Jenkintown. Vignettes are captioned with details of the products uses and surround a central view of the exterior of the busy "Simons, Coleman & Co. National Wagon Works" factory and office at No. 1109 North Front Street. Plate 1 contains two scenes foreshadowing possible British, French, and Prussian invasions. Shows Queen Victoria, on the shore of Britain, accompanied by demons and restraining the British lion while she threatens Columbia, "I will sink your ships and burn your factories they are a perfect nuisance." Columbia, atop a globe flanked by warships, holding an American flag and shield, and with a man at her feet thumbing his nose at Britain, replies, "You don't say so!! Very glad to see you." Second scene shows Emperor Napoleon III, and probably, Prussian commander Otto Von Bismarck conversing in a parlor in front of framed paintings of Napoleon I in exile and Frederick the Great commanding his army. Bismark points to the Napoleon painting and comments "General. St. Helena is not forgotten."
