Title: Do they miss me at home?
Description: Trimmed vignette showing a caricature of a young African American girl, possibly a satirical personification of the popular mid-19th century song of the same title. Depicts the girl, attired in a baby doll dress, her hair in short coils, and the fingers of one hand in her mouth as, in the other, she holds the string of a rolling pull toy horse visible behind her. Published in 1852 and composed by S. M. Grannis with lyrics by Caroline Atherton Mason, "Do they Miss Me at Home" was written in the voice of a homesick girl away at school. The song remained popular through the Civil War when translated to the voice of soldiers. Bufford, later J. H. Title: Emancipation Freedom for all, both black and white!
Description: Print depicting the Emancipation Proclamation for both African Americans and whites including equal opportunity to education. Depicts Lincoln raising his right hand and holding the "Emancipation Proclamation" in his left hand in the center between a poor white family and an enslaved African American family. Both families, attired in torn and worn clothing, stand and kneel as they hold their clasped hands up toward Lincoln, who treads upon broke shackles and a serpent. A "Spelling Book" lies on the ground near them. In the background, Union soldiers stop a white man enslaver from whipping a shackled and enslaved African American woman and children enter "Public School, No. 1." From the roof of the school waves a flag inscribed "Education to all Classes." Description: Date of publication supplied by Wainwright., Select link below for a digital image., Lower left corner missing., Advertisement with ornate border containing a series of vignettes displaying several types of wagons, coaches, and carts produced by the manufactory. Vignettes are captioned with details of the products uses and surround a central view of the exterior of the busy "Simons, Coleman & Co. National Wagon Works" factory and office at No. 1109 North Front Street. Vignettes depict: African American plantation workers transporting sugar cane to a barge by a "cane cart"; laborers and settlers hauling materials out West by "road wagon" and "catamaran"; an ambush of U.S. Army soldiers, baggage wagon, and ambulance by Native Americans; and a busy Philadelphia port scene with a disinterested constable overseeing the wharf congested with carts and wagons as docked Henry Simons's factory ships ready for departure. Description: Series of three Civil War satires containing captioned vignettes utilizing shadow figures to cynically depict the threat of a European intervention; the prowess of the military; and the exploitation of war news. Plate 1 contains two scenes foreshadowing possible British, French, and Prussian invasions. Shows Queen Victoria, on the shore of Britain, accompanied by demons and restraining the British lion while she threatens Columbia, "I will sink your ships and burn your factories they are a perfect nuisance." Columbia, atop a globe flanked by warships, holding an American flag and shield, and with a man at her feet thumbing his nose at Britain, replies, "You don't say so!! Very glad to see you." Second scene shows Emperor Napoleon III, and probably, Prussian commander Otto Von Bismarck conversing in a parlor in front of framed paintings of Napoleon I in exile and Frederick the Great commanding his army. Bismark points to the Napoleon painting and comments "General. St. Helena is not forgotten." Plate 2 includes "Good Bye to the Lager" showing male civilians and a soldier at a saloon; the disorganized and distracted "Jeff. Description: Anti-Davis cartoon invoking the travesties at Confederate war prisons to satirize the incarcerated former Confederate president as a pompous, sniveling ingrate. Shows Davis, attired in a suit, and his feet shackled, in his cell, in front of a table containing his modest meal and complaining to the prison doctor. He bemoans his being unaccustomed to such living and that "you must order some more healthy food, or I shall starve to death." The doctor responds it is "good healthy food, such as our soldiers are fed on" and that their recent achievements prove it is "tolerably healthy."
