Description: Illustration on recto of specimen sheet/price list depicting the factory for the printing establishment at 1525 Orthodox Street (corner of Orthodox and Franklin (later Griscom) Streets). View also includes street and pedestrian traffic, including horse-drawn drays and wagons. A square border with cornice ornaments surrounds the view. Image also contains decorative and pictorial elements. The firm operated from the location until at least the mid 1920s before relocating to 1208 Race Street by 1936. Description: Cartoon depicting two unidentified white men, attired in suits, on the balcony of the "Cleveland Hotel" in front of a hostile crowd calling out "Traitor" and "You be Damned." The speaker clutches a handkerchief and the bannister of the balcony as he tries to placate the crowd by stating it is their "Congress that is trying to break up the Government." The man beside him in the left smugly comments that he hopes the mayor is in town. Description: Trade card promoting Commonwealth Clothing House and whimsically depicting an African American girl acrobat. Shows the girl standing on a bubble, looking down, and holding a straw in her hands with large bubbles at either end. She is barefoot and attired in ankle bracelets; a striped dress with shoulder cut-outs; hoop earrings; and a bow atop her head. Another bubble floats near her legs. Charles V. Whitten, Horatio S. Burdett, and Amos S. Young founded the Boston men's and boys' clothing manufactory Whitten, Burdett & Young in 1862. The firm opened the retail store, Commonwealth Clothing House, in December 1888. Title: Office of the daily terror. The Davis Sewing Machine Co
Description: Racist circular promoting Davis Sewing Machine Co. and depicting a caricature of an African American boy “spying” into an office after having played a practical joke. In the satiric scene, the boy stands on the front steps of a building that has a sign that reads, "Office of the Daily Terror." He leans towards the door and looks through the keyhole with his right eye and his mouth open in a mischievous smile. In his right hand he carries a box labelled "tacks." In his left hand he holds the leather strap of a container marked "C.H.E." and with the handle of a brush sticking out of it. He is attired in a cap; a collared, long-sleeved shirt; and plaid pants with suspenders. The image inside the circular shows the interior of the newspaper office. A balding white man, attired in dress shoes; pants; a waistcoat; and a collared shirt with a bowtie, jolts into the air out of a wooden chair. A tack sticks into his behind. He clutches a newspaper labeled, "Enterprise," in his hand, while a quill and a pair of scissors labeled, "Warranted Can't Steal" fly into the air. In the left is a wastebasket with crumbled papers, one of which reads, "Poets." In the background is a desk. Rows of sheets of paper and a "Daily Terror" sign are pinned to the wall above it. Brothers John and Joseph Sheldon founded the Davis Sewing Machine Company in Watertown, N.Y. in 1868. The firm manufactured the sewing machines invented by Job Davis. In circa 1892, the company began to manufacture bicycles, and soon thereafter phased out the production of sewing machines. Description: Racist trade card promoting soap manufacturer Enoch Morgan's Sons Company and depicting African American women domestics cleaning a parlor. Shows an African American woman, attired in a head kerchief; hoop earrings; a polka dotted dress with the sleeves rolled up to her upper arms; and black shoes, on her hands and knees cleaning a floor with a brush in her right hand. There is a wooden bucket beside the woman. In the right, another African American woman, attired in a short-sleeved dress with a bustle and checked skirt, stands cleaning the molding of a doorway with a cloth. In the background is a lit fireplace and mantle with vases on top of it. Enoch Morgan's Sons Company began manufacturing Sapolio soap in 1869 in New York. Title: Bicycle glide
Description: Sheet music cover containing a genre scene, circa the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, showing bicyclists on East River Drive, i.e. Kelly Drive in East Fairmount Park. In the foreground, a man in checkered coat, striped bicycle pants, and a "Deerstalker" cap rides a "High Wheeler" in front of an arch of the New York Connecting Railway Bridge (built 1866-1867) spanning the Schuylkill River. Behind him, two other bicyclists follow and pass a startled horse pulling a buggy being approached by a park guard from across the road. A locomotive travels over the bridge. In the background, the Promontory Rock Tunnel (bored in 1871), the Girard Avenue Bridge (built 1872-1874), and the Centennial Exhibition observation tower, "Iron Tower," on George's Hill in West Fairmount Park are visible. Scullers row near a steamboat under the distantly-seen bridge on which a locomotive crosses. Also shows horse-drawn carriages traveling on the drive and on the Girard Avenue Bridge. Title: International Electrical Exhibition march
Description: Sheet music cover containing an exterior view, during the evening, of the temporary main building of the exhibition held under the auspices of the Franklin Institute (September 2 to October 11, 1884) at the 3200 block of Lancaster Avenue. Also shows the adjacent old Pennsylvania Railroad Station used as a display annex. A covered overpass connects the buildings. Light shines through the several windows of the main building adorned with Gothic towers. Visitors walk the grounds of both buildings and horse-drawn buggies and an omnibus travel in the street. Also includes an inset depicting a round electric light bulb. Description: Membership certificate containing patriotic, state, and National Guard iconography. Includes the Pennsylvania coat of arms bordered by American flags; two National Guard members in uniform with one holding a rifle and the other a sword; and the" N.G." insignia surrounded by a pyramid of cannon balls, and cannons, drum, flags, and wagon wheels over the banner with the motto "Non Sibi Sed Patria," i.e. "Not Self but Country."
