Title: Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
Description: Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred. Description: View of the chapel with steeple at the African American rural cemetery founded in 1849 at Passyunk Road near 18th and Wolf streets in South Philadelphia. Also shows monuments in the cemetery and visitors, including a family. Cemetery protected by a stone wall with iron fencing, including an iron gate. Title: The great conflagration in Philadelphia on Tuesday July 9th 1850 Terrific explosion of saltpetre [sic] in Water Street. Houses destroyed by the fire 500 _ Killed 57_Wounded 115_ Loss of property over one million of dollars
Description: Disaster scene showing the commotion in front of the partially destroyed stores of John Brock & Co., and Gordon and Berger at 39 (i.e., 100 block) North Water Street. People hold a crowd back as fire fighters attend to the collapsing building spewing a cloud of smoke. A family, including a mother and child, flee past fire fighters rushing to a fallen comrade as debris falls down upon them. Also shows a man kneeling near the Vine Street Wharf as another stands in the center of the view with his arms up in the air. The explosion emanated from a fire started by the friction of a hoisting-machine igniting a large store of gunpowder and saltpeter in the Brock, and Gordon and Berger building. The blaze that spread about one square mile between Front and Callowhill streets destroyed actually about 367 houses and stores. Title: View of the Wire Bridge at Fairmount, Philadelphia Erected in 1842
Description: View looking northeast from below the Wire Bridge of Fairmount, the first suspension bridge in the United States, built over the Schuylkill River from 1841-1842 after the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. Show pedestrians, men on horseback, wagons and carriages approaching, crossing, and departing the bridge near the Fairmount Waterworks. Waterworks include the engine house, mill house, and pavilions on the mound dam and Reservoir Hill. Also shows people fishing on the river, a man carrying a fishing pole over a foot bridge to the canal lock, men seated on the incline to the bridge, and a hotel building. Description: Racing print showing the black Morgan trotting horse racing around the track at the grounds of the fourth national exhibition of the U.S.A.S held October 7-11, 1856. The driver wears a derby and plaid vest. In the background, several spectators watch the event from stands or standing within the center of the track. The judges' stand, the tents for the President and Marshall of the fair, and a tree adorned with the flag of the U.S. Agricultural Society are also visible inside the track. Description: View showing the four-story marble building for the benevolent and charitable organization built 1845-1846 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Sixth Street below Race Street. A young man sits and gestures near the entranceway of the hall. A number of pedestrians walk and stand on the sidewalk surrounding the building. Foot traffic includes a boy rolling a hoop, a little girl with a parasol, an older gentleman conversing with a Quaker, and a boy in a military uniform providing directions. Title: Washington and Lafayette Benefical Society Incorporated April 12th 1825
Description: Membership certificate containing a scene showing the December 31, 1777 meeting between Marquis De Lafayette and General Washington during the American Revolution. On the banks of the Delaware River, under the watch of guards, Washington attended by his officers extends his hand to the young Franch Major General who is accompanied by his two officers. The men stand in front of a row of tents beside which a band of uniformed militia stand near an armed frontiersman and Native American witnessing the event. In the background, militia troops drill and ships sail on the Delaware. Also contains a vignette showing a society member in his sick bed attended by his wife and fellow members. The seated men talk and sit at a table playing cards as the ailing man's son, holds a hoop, and cries at the foot of the bed. Vignette bordered by two posted schedules of the month, day, and hour of "Stated Meetings" for the year that is also printed with the notice that "The Roll shall be called precisely 30 Minutes after the time above specified. Title: Order of the United Daughters of America [membership certificate] Honesty, virtue & industry
Description: Membership certificate for the patriotic nativist women's society established in New York in 1845 as an auxilliary to the Order of United Americans. Contains a vignette portrait of Martha Washington flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice perched in a cluster of clouds. Below on each side, columns entwined with the American flag and adorned with the American eagle and shield rest on pedestals decorated with horns of cornucopia. Between the columns, a "United Daughter" leads a little girl to another "United Daughter" who welcomes them into a temple adorned with garlands of flowers.
