Title: Charles Oakford & Sons model hat store nos 826 & 828, Chestnut Street, Continental Hotel. Philadelphia. Hats, caps & furs, wholesale & retail
Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of the hat store established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. Arches extend toward the visible rear of the store and are labeled "Charles Oakford & Sons"; "Gent's Furnishing Goods"; and "Wholesale Department." Tiles line the floor and the ceiling has minimal molding. Description: View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). In the foreground, the “No. 40” coal-tender locomotive approaches from one of the series of tracks surrounding and within the factory grounds. Nearby, a line of freight cars, some covered in tarp rest on a set of tracks. Within the factory grounds comprised of processing plants and storage sheds, a horse-drawn cart travels and stacks of wood slabs are piled on an elevated, centrally-located piece of land. Description: Confirmation certificate containing allegorical and religious scenes and vignettes set within a border designed as an arch adorned with ornamentations and vinery. Scenes show the confirmation ceremonies for a group of boys and a group of girls, and a view of heaven with the Holy Mother receiving those who have departed the earth. Includes angels, some holding the banner "I.H.S. Behold Thy mother" surrounding the Mother of God who receives men, a woman, and child attired in Reniassance garb. Title: Wood & Perot's ornamental iron works. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement of two views with heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signs adorn the building advertising "Wood & Perot," Manufacturers of Decorative Iron Work" and "Iron Railings, Verandahs, Balconies, Stairs, Counters &c." On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load three horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Across the street, near a tree, ladies in heavy capes and holding parasols promenade past a man pointing out the Clay statue to his male companion., Twelfth Street view shows the new iron foundry completed circa 1858 to the rear of the Ridge Avenue works on the 400 block of Twelfth Street. Two laborers steady a horse-drawn cart near the entry to the factory that is adorned with a tower flying a "Wood & Perot" flag. In the street, a "Fairmount via Chestnut St./Twelfth & Green St." omnibus travels followed by a volunteer riding one of a two-horse team drawing a steam fire engine. Description: Advertisement with a street scene showing "Bennett's Tower Hall Clothing Bazaar." Signage and a flag adorn the tower-shaped storefront in front of which two men converse and ladies approach. Also shows heavy street activity. Two horse-drawn omnibuses travel near an unusually-designed "Tower Hall Clothing Bazaar 518 Market St." wagon and a drayman stopping his dray of goods in front of the store. Title: H. S. Tarr's marble yard, no. 274 Green St. above Seventh Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Title: Lippincott & Co. south west corner of Fourth & Market St Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. Title: [Dyottville Glass Works]
Description: View showing the Dyottville Glass Works, in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the 50 buildings of the premier glass works, including the factory adorned with the sign "Dyottville Glass Works", farmhouses, and barns. Workers enter the factory and walk on the grounds. Also shows several skiffs docked in front of the complex. The works also had a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." Description: Advertisement containing a montage of 5 views of the marble works established in 1855 at 2025 Market Street. Views are separated by borders comprised of filigree, mantles, and sculpture. Upper view shows the exterior of the three-story L-shaped factory.The factory is adorned with a balcony lined with statues, the roof figure of William Penn, and signage. Marble works, predominately monuments, fill the courtyard across from laborers working with a pile of marble slabs near a horse-drawn cart. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn dray parked near the sidewalk and a couple on horseback, a horse-drawn carriage, a horse-drawn cart, and a laborer pushing a hand-cart in the street. Lower views show the "Cutting Room"; "Saw Room"; "Polishing Room"; and "Show Room." Interior views include laborers at work cutting, polishing, and transporting by hand slabs of marble under the presence of factory managers. Views also show an elegantly-attired couple reviewing mantelpieces in the showroom. Most of the laborers toil at work tables lining the walls. Description: Advertisement containing two views showing the manufactories at "Columbia Avenue and Fifth Street" and "No. 181 Cherry Street." "Columbia Avenue" view shows the multiple-level industrial building with two-story addition comprising most of the 500 block of Columbia Avenue. A cupola containing a weather vane and an American flag adorn the roof of the main building. Near one of the factory entries, probably the office, a man holds the reigns of a horse hitched to a one-seat carriage as a horse-drawn omnibus passes from around the corner at the end of the block. In the foreground, in the street, and across from the factory, near a small pile of debris, passengers, including a woman and a family, wait at, and enter the rear of a stopped "Germantown Road North Fifth Street" horse-drawn omnibus. A man on horseback approaches the omnibus. A drayman leads his horse-drawn vehicle loaded with a crate past the opposite street corner on which a couple promenades. The vehicle is drawn by two agitated horses that the driver attempts to settle. At the east side of the building, two gentlemen converse and another horse-drawn wagon drives down the street. Also shows a woman strolling past a tree at the adjacent corner, and neighboring buildings. Cornelius & Baker was founded in 1835 and operated 2 factories and a storefront by the 1850s.
