Description: View showing the "dwelling house" hotel built on Walnut Street between 33rd and 34th streets for the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Guests stand on the porch of the twenty-six house hotel and elegantly dressed men, women and children stroll the grounds in front of the hotel. The house number of each of the twenty-six properties, from 3300-3350, is labeled above the roof line. A Chestnut and Walnut Street streetcar filled with passengers travels east as horse-drawn carriages and coaches travel in both directions on Walnut Street. The hotel, built on inexpensive land considered undesirable for a permanent hotel, was composed of rows of several houses that were to be later sold or leased as individual dwellings. Description: Advertisement showing several marine vessels docked in front of the engine & boiler works complex at the busy river front. Complex contains several buildings, including a "boiler works," "steam works," an "office," "ship house," and "smith shop." One of the buildings contains a weather vane adorned by the figure of William Penn. Teams of several horses haul materials on trucks past the boiler and steam works. Laborers, including men attending to a massive pipe in a yard lined with steam engines and other machinery, work on the docks, piers, and boats at the complex. Docked vessels include the tug boat "Columbia," paddleboats, barges, a sailboat, and other tugs. Also contains a vignette of a paddleboat and a sailing ship on each side of the title. The firm established as Reaney, Neafie & Levy in 1844, specialized in iron boats and engines, and later steam fire engines. Reaney left the partnership to start his own shipyard in 1859. Title: [Certificate of membership on the committee of ships and ship builders in behalf of the Great Central Fair of the States of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware] Great Central Fair, for the United States Sanitary Commission. Philadelphia June 1864
Description: Committee membership certificate containing six vignettes and two scenes related to ship building and the Sanitary Fair. Scenes at the top and bottom edges show ships under construction at dry dock and visitors entering the Union Avenue entrance of the fair. Ship building scene shows several ship builders at work in front of and on the hull of a ship at dry dock at the river. A completed ship on a floating dry dock and ships in the water complete the view. Scene also includes a large America Flag incorporated as a pictorial element from the bottom scene and the motto "The Wealth and the Strength of the Nation." The fair scene shows throngs of people entering the arch-shaped entrance to the central passage of the fair site at Logan Square. A large flag pole ascends from the building. Vignettes create a side border and depict workshop scenes of the different professions within ship building. Laborers form the hull of a rowboat, sand and shave wood planks and huge spars (i.e. masts), sew sails, blacksmith using an anvil and hot coal from a furnace, and craft parts of the rigging. Many of the scenes include the tools of the trade, raw materials, and views out of the open entryways of the workshops toward vessels on the river. Vignettes surrounded by scroll flourishes. Also includes the names of committee members by their profession - Ship Builders, Boat Builders, Ship Joiners, Ship Smiths, Spar Makers, Riggers, Block Makers, and Sail Makers. Description: Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone. Description: Exterior view of front facade of hospital building constructed 1856-1861 after designs by John M. Gries at 2100 North Forty-ninth Street. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital Association of Philadelphia. Instituted, September 5th 1862 Erected September 5th 1862 for temporary relief of sick and wounded soldiers, arriving in and passing through Philadelphia. Closed August 9th 1865
Description: Certificate containing a view showing a bustling street scene around the hospital situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. On the sidewalk, soldiers converse, men and women pedestrians stroll, and a female peddler and vendor sell their goods and wares, the latter patronized by Zouaves. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Men, women, and children walk, converse, and greet each other, and horse-drawn carriages, including possibly an ambulance, travel past and stop near the hospital. Children include a boy carrying a basket and two attempting to help a man with his valise. Also shows surrounding buildings in the background. Title: In commemoration of the great parade of the Philadelphia Fire Department October 16th 1865 Dedicated to the Philadelphia firemen and their visiting brethren
Description: Commemorative print containing a portrait of Chief Engineer David M. Lyle in uniform and three vignettes. Vignettes show an injured soldier being transported from an ambulance at the Citizens Volunteer Hospital; a horse drawn steam engine; and fire fighters battling a blaze with a steam engine. Also contains a list of over 100 regional fire companies who participated in the parade surrounded by a border designed as fire hoses extending from a fire hydrant. The 1865 parade was the greatest one in the history of the fire companies with near twenty thousand fireman processing nearly 20 miles from Broad Street. Title: National Farm School for children of colored soldiers and colored orphans - Eastern Branch, Washington, D.C Established March 1866, by H. de Mareil, editor & proprietor of the Messenger Franco American. Incorporated by act of Congress 25th July 1866
Description: Landscape view depicting the National Farm School founded in 1866 by Henrie De Mareil of New York and situated on a hilly plot of land with trees, bushes, meadows, and cleared fields. Shows, in the center foreground, three African American children harvesting wheat under the guidance of a white, bearded man. Behind them, two men plow a field with horse-drawn tractors across from individuals binding sheaths of wheat in an open field near a dirt path. In the foreground, cows stand and/or drink in a pond. In the left background, two individuals plow a field with horse-drawn tractors. In the distance center and left background, people mill in front of dwelling, farm, and school-like buildings standing in front of grassy hillsides. The school-like building (center background) is adorned with two flags, a French and an American one. Incorporated by Congress in July 1866, the mission of the school was to provide "normal and school education, as well as a practical knowledge of farming in all its branches" to "orphan and dependent children of colored soldiers, and of other colored orphans." By November 1866, the school was under construction and had fifty pupils. That month, the French Opera Comique Troupe held a benefit concert for the school in Philadelphia that was reported to "not have been as well attended as it should have." Having given special attention to the engraving and printing of bonds and by using a combination of geometrical lathe and rosette designs we are able to produce a class of work so intricate as to prevent counterfeiting, it being impossible to imitate the same with any degree of accuracy. Description: Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters racing down a street on a horse-drawn steam fire engine during the day; firefighters, two with trumpets, drawing a hand-pump fire engine out of the station during the night; and an exterior view of the Franklin Fire station. Fire fighting equipment including a trumpet, ax, and belt are drawn bundled together to form a decorative element below the vignettes. Description: Book advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding vignette views of the exterior of "Jacob Haehnlen's Lithographic Establishment" and a trompe l'oeil display of overlapping cards with advertising text and types of prints available from the firm. View shows the six-story brownstone and print shop, "Goldmsith Hall," owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising "J. Haehnlen's Steam Power Printing Rooms" and "J. Haehnlen's Lithographic Rooms" adorn the side of the building in addition to large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn carriage, dray, and cart traveling in the street. Printing sample vignette includes the lithographer's tradecard atop cards advertising tickets; bills of lading; wine, liquor, perfumers, physician's and druggist's labels; "Borders & Titles for Photographic Albums"; diplomas, "Certificates Stock and Deposit;" letter heads; bonds; blanks; show cards; plans; circular cards; checks, notes, and drafts.
