Title: Bits of nature and some art products, in Fairmount Park, at Philadelphia, Penna
Description: Volume of compiled prints and drawings by lithographer, etcher, and artist Augustus Kollner primarily depicting landscapes of Fairmount Park and originally published in his "Bits of Nature ...," one of four volumes in his 1878 series of small folio pictures. Also contains views of Philadelphia and Bucks and Montgomery counties. Several of the prints also show park and riverscape; residences and estates; animals, including canal mules, horses, cows, and dogs; park visitors, including an African American family, children, and persons on foot and on horseback; steamboats, rowboats, and other vessels on the Schuylkill River; and rock formations. Other views show wharf workers at lunch and a cliff-side residence at North Twenty-Seventh Street near the park., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., Titles include Thos. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Statues of George Washington, William Penn, a group of Native Americans, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay would face Chestnut Street near Independence Hall., Contains passages of explicative text printed on verso. Text describes how to achieve this plan for the square. The old brick wall surrounding the square would be removed, along with the court house on Sixth Street, and the building occuppied by the Philosophical Society on Fifth Street. Description: Illustrated comic stock trade card with the caption, "Tables turned," depicting two fishermen, one in mid-air holding a large fish to his chest, as his fellow fisherman reels them both in., Copyrighted by Bufford, Boston., Advertising text printed on verso: To printers. The series of advertising cards of which this is a sample comprises ten different sets, each containing 6 designs, or 60 in all. They are comic and sentimental in character, finely drawn and beautifully executed, and are the cheapest and most attractive for the price now in the market. Description: Series of illustrated trade cards promoting George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup". Four trade cards depict views of Fairmount Park, including one eight-page foldout advertisement containing advertising text pages. Illustrations include the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Title: Memorial chart centennial jubilee Liberty, equality, fraternity to all nations
Description: Print commemorating the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 containing allegorical vignettes bordered by portraits of the eighteen presidents and views of Philadelphia landmarks and Centennial buildings. Allegorical vignettes show the female figures of Justice, Liberty, and Prosperity seated next to each other on a pedestal in front of a mountain valley, and a large assembly of men of international origin attired in native costumes. Depicted Philadelphia landmarks include Independence Hall, Masonic Temple, Girard College, Carpenters Hall, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Music. Centennial building exteriors include the Main Building, Machinery Hall, and Memorial Hall. Additional portraits depict prominent figures in the administration of the Centennial and Pennsylvania Governor John F. Hartranft and Philadelphia Mayor William S. Stokley. Portraits include Joseph R. Hawley, President of the U.S. Centennial Commission; Alfred T. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease."
