Description: Incomplete card game containing 68 illustrated cards. Cards depict the bust-length portraits of Thomas Bailey Aldrich; William Cullen Bryant; Robert Burns; Samuel L. Clemens, "Mark Twain"; J. Fenimore Cooper; Ralph Waldo Emerson; James T. Fields; F. Bret Harte; Oliver Wendell Holmes; William Dean Howells; Henry W. Longfellow; James Russell Lowell; Samuel Rogers; Bayard Taylor; Alfred Tennyson; Charles Dudley Warner; Richard Grant White; and John G. Whittier. Some portraits are in profile. Versos of cards contain an allegorical image composed of a stack of books, scrolls and leaves of paper, a laurel wreath, and a quill pen. Includes small number of incomplete sets for J. Fenimore Cooper, Henry W. Longfellow; James Russell Lowell, and Richard Grant White. Title: The old Phila. fire department. Period of 1850. The great engine contest on Sunday evening July 7th 1850 at 5th & Market sts
Description: Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Clusters of spectators, including men, women, and children gather near the firefighters and under the market sheds. Description: View, probably from an atlas, showing the Victorian-style house and substantial property of the state legislator at 1109 Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia. The property, surrounded by a fence, contains a carriage house and large landscaped garden, including a wall of trellises, a green house, and a dog house. A gardener works near the trellises. Neighboring buildings, including row houses and W.C. Gill, apothecary, are visible in the background. Title: Sacred Heart Convent, "Eden Hall." Torresdale, Pa
Description: View of the girls boarding school and convent administered by the Society of Sacred Heart Sisters that was built 1849-1850 after the designs of Frank Wills at 4800 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The stone building contains several wings and a chapel. Crosses adorn the roofs. Girls play on the grounds landscaped with trees. Also shows a woman and child walking up the path to the school entrance and a man with a horse-drawn wagon near the chapel. A border, arched at the top with simple art details, frames the image. The society purchased the Torresdale estate of F. Title: Church of Our Lady of Consolation. Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pa In charge of the Augustinian Fathers
Description: Certificate containing an exterior view of the Roman Catholic church, also known as St. Mary's Lady of Consolation Church, and later Our Mother of Consolation Church, built in 1855 at 7-25 East Chestnut Hill Avenue. Church contains the Gothic spire built in 1885. A Victorian-style residence stands adjacent to the church and an iron-work fence bordered by bushes line the properties. A man enters the church building while nearby a lady walks across the path in the sidewalk, which leads to the church yard. In the street, a horse-drawn buggy travels. On the opposite sidewalk, a gentleman on a stroll walks in the direction of two young men, one carrying a basket on his arm. Also shows a street lamp.
