Title: The Weccacoe Engine Co.'s house and the reception of the United Fire Co. of Baltimore
Description: View showing Weccacoe Fire Company firefighters (left) welcoming the firefighters of the United Fire Company of Baltimore (right) in front of the three-story Weccacoe engine house on the 100 block of Queen Street in Southwark. An eagle surmounts the dormer-like addition on top of the building. The captains (including General Anthony Miltenberger, chief marshall of the Union Fire Co., center right), shake hands in front of the open engine house doors, behind which the faint outline of equipment is visible. Both companies wear uniforms. The Weccacoe firefighters wear long, belted jackets under red capes adorned with "Weccacoe W.E.S", and hats marked with "Weccacoe 1800" on the front and "FA" (Fire Association of Philadelphia) on the back. Title: Northern Liberties & Spring Garden Water Works
Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. A man stands with his arms crossed in the side door, a couple strolls arm in arm, and three men stand and converse at the foot of the stairs of the engine house entrance. Includes a canalboat (named the Captain T.M. Scott, after the artist) on the river, along with a partial view of the water basin of the waterworks lined by a fence in the background. The waterworks, completed circa 1845 after the designs of engineer William E. Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada. March 15 1856 in which 50 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, under the winter night sky, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat as rowboats race to the wreck. In the right of the image, a partial view of the ferry "Dido" traveling to the rescue is visible. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Corson survived by leaping ashore before the uncontrolled ship drifted back out on the river., Reduced variant of print issued by the same artist and publisher [Wainwright 81]. Description: Busy street view showing businesses on the 800 block (802-824) of Chestnut Street. Majority of the storefronts show merchandise displays in the windows. Includes a storefront to let (800); Lewis Ladomus & Co., watches, jewelry & silver ware (802); Theodore H. McCalla, hats and caps (lower floor) and A. F. Lupus, morocco cases "upstairs" (804); Anthony Mustin, trimmings (806); Charles Dummin, importer, musical instruments, fancy goods & toys (812); J.W. Scott, gentleman's furnishing store and shirt manufactory (814); James S. Hotel also includes window shades for an unidentified store advertising watches and jewelry. In the foreground, heavy street and pedestrian traffic is visible in front and across from the storefronts. Several horse-drawn vehicles travel in the street past the sidewalks congested with pedestrians. Pedestrians include a newspaper boy, couples on promenade, a gentleman escorting two ladies greeting another gentleman, and patrons looking at store windows and entering the businesses., Vehicles include a "Chestnut & Walnut Sts." omnibus, horse-drawn carriages, a partially unloaded dray, and a Farrel & Herring (safe manufactory) delivery wagon drawn by three horses. Rogers' coach and light carriage manufactory, corner of 6th & Master Streets, Philadelphia Carriages of every description built to order, which for style, durability & elegance of finish, shall not be surpassed by any in the country. The work is conducted under the immidiate superintendance [sic] of the proprietor, who is himself a practical coach maker. N.B. orders from any part of the world, promptly executed. Southern & western merchants will find it to their advantage to call at this establishment. The 6th St. line of omnibuses run from the exchange to the factory every few minutes
Description: Advertisement depicting an exterior view of the Rogers' industrial complex, the "model coach factory of America," at the busy corner of Sixth and Master streets. A white man clerk displays a carriage to a man and woman couple as laborers work on the upper stories. Drays, surreys, "Rogers" delivery carts, and a young African American man with a horse traverse the intersection. A white man passenger disembarks from a Sixth Street line horse-drawn omnibus near the factory entrance. A second omnibus rests at the corner, the white man driver unhappily receiving a citation from a white man constable; his young, white boy passenger watching with a look of awe sitting beside his mother. Rogers, the business established in 1846, and the factory erected in 1853, absorbed rival manufactory George W. Watson in 1870. Title: Grand division of the Sons of Temperance Pennsylvania. [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing a border comprised of vignettes, filigree, and other pictorial details. Vignettes depict "Love for your members in sickness & in health" showing a sick bed scene; "Purity of Heart & Life" showing an allegorical scene with a woman dressed in white standing in the forest near a lake and fountain; "Fidelity to your solemn obligations" portraying a scene of a member taking his oath in a parlor; and a scene of a man sitting in bed and reading. Other pictorial details include vinery, forestry, and rock formations. Also contains the seals of the "Grand Division State of Pennsylvania" and the "National Division, S of T Organized June 14, 1844." in the lower corners. Title: This diploma was awarded by the Luzerne County Agricultural Society at their [blank] annual fair held at Wyoming [blank] 18[blank]
Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. The Luzerne County Agricultural Society was founded in 1858 by persons interested in farming and gardening with the mission "to foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Sheet music cover containing an exterior view of institute building and grounds from the Delaware River. Students stroll on the lawn. A passenger train of the Philadelphia, Germantown, and Norrristown (later Philadelphia & Reading) Railroad passes in the foreground and a boat is moored on the river bank. The institute was established in 1845. Shows the residential, commercial, industrial, religious, educational, and cultural buildings lining the streets and outer lying areas of Center City. Also shows parts of West Philadelphia, Windmill Island, and Camden, NJ. and public utilities, bridges, railroad depots, and reservoirs.
