Title: Clark's Inn &c. facing the State House; Bridge & Benezett's house in Chestnut Street
Description: Trimmed book illustration showing Clark's Inn also known as the State House Inn on the north side of the 500 block of Chestnut Street. Includes a woman with a pail by a side door of the tavern, two male pedestrians, and neighboring buildings. Title: Clermont Academy
Description: Handbill containing a view of the boy's boarding school built in 1804 for brothers John Thomas and Charles Carre at Heart Lane and Nicetown Lane, between Germantown and Frankford. School property includes landscaped lawns, a barn, and trees. A man approaches the entrance of the school where a woman waits at the door. Pupils are visible in the first floor windows. Also contains several paragraphs signed by administrator Samuel S. Griscom describing the school, including location, "Course of Instruction," "Terms for Tuition," and the school philosophy in addition to names of references. Title: The castle of the state in Schuylkill
Description: Exterior view of the clubhouse known as The Castle of the Fishing Company of the State in Schuylkill. Shows men spread out across the grounds, some sitting at a table outside, others walking in the woods near the clubhouse and stables. Two men stand with a dog at the edge of the river, looking toward a man in a rowboat in the foreground. Association formed in 1732 for hunting and fishing, originally on "Eaglesfield" the old estate of William Warner on the western bank of the Schuylkill River. Title: Philadelphia taste displayed. Or, bon-ton below stairs
Description: Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms."
