Title: The Magnetic Observatory at the Girard College
Description: Plate illustrating an oblique elevation and floor plan of the Magnetic Observatory building, the first magnetic observatory in the United States, constructed on the west grounds of the college in 1839 after designs by Thomas Ustick Walter. Labels for instruments are included in the floor plan and include a transit; clock; dew point instrument; telescope declinometer; anemometer and rain gauge; barometer; telescope & horizontal force magnetometer; telescope & vertical force megnetometer; and thermometers. The brainchild of Alexander D. Bache, the observatory was moved by master carpenter James O. Description: Commemorative print containing bust-length portraits, within a decorative border, of the original faculty of the first degree granting U.S. medical college for women that opened in 1850. Description: Advertisement for S.F. Jacoby & Co. containing a montage of three titled views showing the sites involved in its marble manufacturing operations. The scenes are separated and surrounded by an ornate border comprised of patriotic imagery on top, including an eagle clutching the American flag and shield near a bust of George Washington and the state seals of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; filigree, foliage, and tassels decorate the central portion, where putti hold up a banner displaying the title of the central view; and a lion-mouth fountain adorns the bottom portion of the border. Description: Proof for an advertisement showing the two-and-a-half story warehouse with numerous windows at the northeast corner of Eight and Zane streets. Patrons enter the entrances, including one adorned with signage, of the building. Sign advertises "Beds Hair Mattresses Cushions Feathers Moss Ticking Cotts Cattail." Bedding and bed posts are visible in or hang out of most of the warehouse windows. A stuffed swan standing among pillows is also visible in one of the lower windows. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. Description: Advertisement containing an ornamental border, vignette examples of Kollner's work, and several lines of advertising text for the collaboration between Camp and Kollner at the Phonenix Block circa 1849-1851. Vignettes, marked with variant Kollner imprints, include General Washington, accompanied by two of his officers, and dismounted from a horse that is managed by a black handler (Servant William Lee?); a line drawing of the Phoenix Block building; the back of an old man, possibly Franklin, dressed in colonial attire, and seated at his secretary; and a view showing a grand building, probably a Capitol, along a river on which vessels sail. Border also includes vignettes. Description: Advertisement showing a view of the glue and animal product manufactories of Charles Baeder on a lot of land on the 1700 block of North Sixth Street. Includes the seven-story glue works with cupola and the smaller multi-story starch, hide whip, and curled hair factory. Two outbuildings with active smoke stacks stand between the factories. Trees and bushes are visible on the property. A horse-drawn cart travels in the foreground. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson's inscription on recto: Mar. 1849; Market Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates", "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements including a large scale model of a coffee pot contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a couple strolls, two laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a female customer enters the store. An African American peddler with tray and bell passes a line of crates on the sidewalk. Tinsmiths work near the third floor windows. Melloy & Ford, a partnership established in 1849, was in business until 1861 when Melloy entered partnership with Isaac Smith at the same address.

Elegantly dressed patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American coach driver. Title: William Wirt Library and Literary Institute of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing an image depicting a bust of author, statesman, and ninth attorney general of the United States, William Wirt, on a pedestal inscribed with the text "William Wirt Library and Literary Institute, founded March 18th, 1834." Books with "United States," "Rome," and "Greece," written on the spines rest in front of an allegorical female figure that sits next to the monument. On the left, an eagle perched on an olive branch grasps a banner with a Greek phrase written on it. A charter, laurel wreath, and several books written by Wirt, including "Old Bachelor," "Life of P. Henry," "Spy" and "Speeches," lie on the ground in front of the eagle. In the background stands a decrepit pediment from an old Grecian building. Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. The man at the first press rolls ink onto a stone, as another man, probably an apprentice, carries a stone from the reserve of fresh stones arranged and stacked on the shelves on the opposite wall. Bottles and other supplies line the shelves between each window, and several packaged stones are piled on the floor in the foreground awaiting shipment. View includes a standing press. A foreman, possibly Wagner or McGuigan, attired in a suit observes the printers. Includes views of the recto and verso of the silver medal awarded to Wagner & M'Guigan for "skill and ingenuity" in lithography by the Franklin Institute in 1844 below the image and flanking the advertising text. Title: Thomas Hargrave ornamental carver and sculptor s.w. corner of Ridge Road & 13th St
Description: Advertisement showing the three-story business facade, adorned with signage, and the adjacent marble yard at N. 13th Street and Ridge Avenue (east of North Broad and north of Spring Garden streets). A female patron enters the doorway of the establishment in which a monument adorned with a figure in recline is visible within the window. Below the window, signage for "Union Refectory. Oysters Terrapins & Game in Season by Charles Epley" hangs. A male patron descends the stairs to the oyster cellar. A man and boy admire the sepulchral monuments and headstones, many ornamented, which crowd the adjacent fenced, marble yard. Ornamentations include eagles, urns, a female figure at recline, and the inscription "Mother." In the street, a horse-drawn cart is positioned to receive goods across from a stopped "Girard College & Green Hill Chesnut [sic] and Thirteenth" omnibus. A couple exits the rear of the horse-drawn vehicle that is filled with passengers. A landscape view decorates the cab. In the background, neighboring buildings, one with smoking chimneys, are visible. Description: Advertisement showing a southwest view of the three-story storefront, adorned with signage, on the 200 block of Walnut Street. In front of the store, a female patron reaches into a sack - one of several sacks, crates, and canisters displayed on a platform near the open doorway. Within the store, a couple stands near one of two rows of shelves of merchandise furnishing the establishment. On the second floor, large, open panel doors expose the room lined with hay. A barrel and crates, and boxes of tea and sacks stacked in the rear of the floor are visible. Several brooms are stored in front of the third floor windows. At the side of the building, two gentlemen converse near a side door and hand-cart across from a row of crates and barrels that are lined against the wall. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex at 608 Delaware Avenue (occupied 1844) for the lead pipe manufactory established in 1841 by George N., Henry B., and William P. Tatham. Factory employees work in front of and at the wharf of the industrial building that is covered with signage. Men lift a barrel with a hoist; guide horse-drawn drays into a courtyard, down an alley, and to be unloaded; move planks of wood; and spray a hose into the river. Also shows partial views of surrounding buildings. Tatham & Brothers, a firm established in New York in 1838, operated the Philadelphia branch from the address until circa 1867.
