Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront, with decorative masonry, for "George Mecke's Northern Cabinet Ware-Rooms and Furniture Ware Rooms" on Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). At the ground floor, a couple enters one of the two entranceways of the building. Furniture, including a side table, chaise lounge, armoire, and rocker are visible at the entrances, display window, and within the store. A woman, in a shawl, and holding a parasol approaches the chairs displayed at the second entrance. She stands across from two clerks retrieving a chair from the cellar to be loaded onto a "G. Mecke No. 355" horse-drawn cart parked in the street. The cart already contains a chest of drawers. Additional cabinetry, including chairs and a bed frame, and a worker are seen in the upper floor windows. Title: George W. Watson coach & harness maker. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing views of the "Factory at 13th & Parrish Sts." and the factory and showroom, i.e., "Old Stand No. 9, Sth. Sixth St." Factory view shows the bustling "George S. Watson Coach Factory" complex with workshops, courtyard, and sheds surrounded by a wood fence on the 800 block of North 13th Street. Within the courtyard, wheelwrights work on a wheel propped up next to a blazing fire as another worker walks past with a watering can. Other workers retrieve planks of wood from piles loaded in a shed and attend to a carriage. Carriage parts, a horse in a single stall, and piles of wood surround the workers. Within the workshops, carriages and coaches and metalworkers at a forge are visible. A wagon maker also works on a few vehicles placed on a balcony attached to the upper floor of the main workshop. Outside of the complex, a worker rolls a wheel toward the entrance to the workshop with the forge as another leads two horses toward the entrance of the courtyard. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the three-and-one-half story storefront on the 700 block of Race Street bordered by paragraphs of advertising text, including notice of prices that ranged from 25 cents to one dollar per box or bottle. Signage above the large central showcase window lists several diseases and ailments cured by "Dr. G. Stuart's Syrup and Vegetable Pills." Infirmities include consumption, dysentery, chills and fevers, piles, colds, coughs, bronchitis, "tumours," "erysipelas," neuralgia, and "general and nervous debility &c. &c." Shadowy views of branches, leaves, and decanters are visible in the window. Description: Cartoon depicting conflicting responses to the condemnation of slavery in the U.S. by Daniel O'Connell, an Irish abolitionist and leader of the movement for Irish independence (i.e. Irish Repeal Movement). Depicts O'Connell confronting President John Tyler as his son, Robert, an Irish repeal advocate introduces him. O'Connell, attired as an Irish thug, holds a club labeled "Agitation" and a bag labeled "Repale Rint." He condemns John Tyler for being an enslaver, "Arrah! give up your slaves I'd rather shake hands with a pick-pocket than wid a slaveholder, and if we get our repale we'll set em all free..." President Tyler, who was passively against slavery, greets O'Connell stating his support of repeal. Description: Deathbed scene depicting Washington lying peacefully on a four poster bed, the curtains drawn, his head propped up on pillows, surrounded by his wife, grandchildren, a Quaker friend, the family physician (Dr. Craik), and a man and woman African American domestic. In the bedroom, dimly lit by candlelight from a nearby table, a somber Martha Washington, her grandson and granddaughter by her side, sits by Washington's bedside and holds his hand. On the opposite side of the bed, the physician checks for the President's pulse. The saddened Quaker and servants watch from the foot of the bed; the woman domestic kneels and cries. Title: Lacey & Phillips
Description: Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. The South Fifth Street address was damaged by fire in 1854 and the firm relocated to larger facility at 14 and 16 South Seventh street in 1855. Lacey died in 1860 and the firm was renamed S.R. Phillips Company. Description: Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story building containing the hotel and tavern operated by John Thompson at 329 Market Street and Robert Denny's saddles and harness store at 327 1/2 Market Street. Harnesses and other horse paraphernalia hang from the shop's display window and entranceways, including a stable entrance marked, "Entertainment for Horses."
