Description: Advertisement for the iron works complex originally built in 1836 on Fifth Street below Franklin Street, i.e., Tasker Street (1700 block). Laborers work among machinery parts, including piles of cylinders and wheels, in the courtyard of the works containing several buildings. One worker pushes a handcart. Morris, Tasker, and Morris was founded by Stephen Morris in 1821 as a stove and grate manufactory. In the late 1820's, Henry Morris and Thomas Tasker joined the firm which was renamed S.P. Morris & Co. Circa 1836 the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker, & Morris when Wistar Morris assumed the position of Stephen Morris and the firm began to manufacture gas pipes. In 1856, the firm was renamed Morris, Tasker & Co. Title: West Philadelphia Sadiron Works, M.L. Keen & Brother, Proprietors
Description: Advertisement for the small fenced factory complex with courtyard of the busy "M.L. Keen & Bror." sadiron works on Washington Avenue in West Philadelphia. Complex includes the single story "Iron foundry" and "Grinding Shop" to the right of the two-story warehouse adorned with signage reading "West Phila. Sad Iron Works." Laborers lead horse-drawn carts into and out of the complex. One entry is marked "No admittance." Within the complex, workers move large wheels by hand, push a handcart, and drive a cart. They also enter and exit doorways of the warehouse where men also hoist barrels. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia branch (est. circa 1843) of the rail express service company started by Alvin Adams of Boston in 1840. Title: Reliance Portable Boat Company's line of portable iron boats for the transportation of goods between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Upper image depicts a bird's eye view of a locomotive that is hauling boat sections approaching an incline to the canal. A long canal boat traverses the waterway. In the background, a farm and farmland are visible on the numerous hillsides. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex between Washington, Federal, Fourth, and Fifth streets for the firm established in 1836 as Merrick & Towne (renamed Merrick & Son in 1849 and Merrick & Sons in 1852). In the right of the image, several laborers remove a pipe through the stable-like doors of a warehouse near which a pile of pipes lies on the sidewalk. A boy, sitting on a hydrant, with a dog watches the scene from the opposite corner. To the rear of the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart filled with coal enters the fenced courtyard. Description: Advertisement showing J.O. Thornley Coffee Roaster & Spice Factory at 1215 South Third Street in Southwark. Depicts the factory buildings, including a “coffee roasting” facility, in the left of the image. Horse-drawn factory wagons, one marked “J.O. Thornley Coffee Roaster & Spice Factory Southwark,” drawn by horse are parked in, and arrive and depart from around the factory, including the alley between the complex and a residence (Mrs. Smith). Description: Proof print of a panoramic view showing the Delaware riverfront near the Walnut Street Wharf. Includes from south to north the merchant house of Samuel and William Welsh (218 S. Del. Ave.), Bloodgood's Hotel (10 Walnut, infamous for the 1855 Jane Johnson fugitive slave case), the wharf, the Cope Line Ticket office (1 Walnut, major passenger service for Irish immigrants operated by the merchants, the Cope Brothers), and Bethel Mariner's Church, i.e., Mariner's Presbyterian Church (organized 1830 on Water St. above Walnut St.). Several vessels, including one at the Walnut Street Wharf and two Liverpool packets of Cope, are docked in the choppy waters of the river. Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer at 120, i.e., 324 Chestnut Street. Shows two well-dressed women in a boudoir that is decorated with carpet, drapes, and a candlelabra. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair." Description: Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. Materials displayed in the windows include a stuffed bear, bottles, mason jars, canisters, and framed certificates. A drain pipe adorns the building. Title: Handicap race presidential stakes 1844
Description: Satire of the presidential election of 1844 depicting the potential candidates; Whig Henry Clay, and Democrats Martin Van Buren, Lewis Cass, John Calhoun, Richard M. Johnson, and John Tyler on various mounts racing for the White House. Clay riding a racoon leads the pack claiming that no one can overtake him. Van Buren follows riding a fox and holding a weather vane labeled "N" (North) and "S" (South) with the slogans "Free Trade Texas" and "Abolition Oregon" attached. He acknowledges that Lewis Cass is closing in. Cass on his hound gloats that he has finally overtaken the "old fox." Calhoun, positioned fourth, rides a lion with an enslaved African American man and child, portrayed in racist caricature, on his shoulders and bemoans his extra weight. Johnson, on foot and holding a hook, follows Calhoun stating he will "hook on" to whomever gets in. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. At the work stations, rows of men work at finishing pages. In the background, men operate book presses and other machinery, and transport reams of papers near women folding pages below a loft. Description: Advertisement containing an ornamental border, vignette examples of Kollner's work, and several lines of advertising text for the collaboration between Camp and Kollner at the Phonenix Block circa 1849-1851. Vignettes, marked with variant Kollner imprints, include General Washington, accompanied by two of his officers, and dismounted from a horse that is managed by a black handler (Servant William Lee?); a line drawing of the Phoenix Block building; the back of an old man, possibly Franklin, dressed in colonial attire, and seated at his secretary; and a view showing a grand building, probably a Capitol, along a river on which vessels sail. Border also includes vignettes. Vignettes depict a military scene with an officer on horseback accompanied by another soldier on the shore of an ocean on which a ship sails; and a trade scene between a gentleman and a Native American reviewing a stack of goods of commerce at a pier. Description: Plate illustrating an oblique elevation and floor plan of the Magnetic Observatory building, the first magnetic observatory in the United States, constructed on the west grounds of the college in 1839 after designs by Thomas Ustick Walter. Labels for instruments are included in the floor plan and include a transit; clock; dew point instrument; telescope declinometer; anemometer and rain gauge; barometer; telescope & horizontal force magnetometer; telescope & vertical force megnetometer; and thermometers.
