Title: Insurrection on board a slave ship
Description: Lithograph was copied from an engraving originally published in Carl Bernhard Wadstrom's Essay on Colonization (London: Printed for the author, by Darton and Harvey, Gracechurch-Street, 1794-95). As the title suggests, the lithograph shows an insurrection aboard a slave ship. From the vantage point of a raised barricade near the ship's stern, the crew fires upon (what looks to be) hundreds of slaves crowded upon the deck. A number of slaves jump overboard. Title: Church of the Holy Trinity, Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia
Description: Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1856-1859 after the designs of John Notman at 200 South 19th Street. Includes the chancel; vestibules; towers; the center, South, and North galleries of pews; and a porch. Pews are printed with a row number, "value," "seats," and "rent." Values range from $1200 to $200 and pews 146 and 147 are annotated in ink: "3 for rent" and "1 for rent." In March 1859, an auction administered by M. Thomas & Sons was arranged by the vestry to raise funds to complete the construction of the church, particularly a steeple. Title: A new way of passing a bad Nebraska bill
Description: Antislavery cartoon criticizing the abuse of political power by President Franklin Pierce, his cabinet, and Stephen Douglas in their attempt to force the ratification of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill of 1854. Depicts antislavery Senator Thomas Hart Benton, holding the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which prohibited the extension of slavery into the Western Territories, arguing against slavery in Nebraska. Pierce, who holds the Nebraska Bill, threatens that any political opposition to the bill shall be severely punished. Douglas, with the President's cabinet, sits at a table behind Pierce and observes that acquiescence to "Southern Institutions" will get him the Presidency next term. Members of the cabinet comment upon Nebraska's suitability for slavery. Title: Wootten's excelsior stove lustre or pure black lead Prepared by John Wootten, Jr. No. 94 Spruce St. Wholesale Depot, no. 13 North Third Street Phila
Description: Racist advertisement promoting Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature, polishing a stove. Shows the African American man servant, barefoot and attired in a plaid, collared shirt and pants, kneeling before a stove with a brush in his left hand. On the floor in front of him is a glass of water, an open can of polish, and a box labeled, Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre or Pure Black Lead. In the right, a white woman stands wearing her brown hair in a bun and attired in an off-the-shoulder dress with a bow at the chest and lace sleeves. She looks toward the man and asks, “Uncle Tom whose blacking is that you are useing [sic].” He replies in the vernacular, “La Missey don’t you know dat -- dat is Wooten's Lustre." To the left of the woman, a black cat stands on a wooden chair with its back raised and looks at the man. Also visible in the image are plates, bowls, and cups on shelves, another wooden chair, and an open window that has a potted plant on the ledge. Another advantage which this article possesses over all others, is, that it tends to preserve the iron from the deleterious effects of damp and rust, which so often render a stove entirely useless in the course of a few seasons. Title: An east prospect of the city of Philadelphia taken by George Heap from the Jersey shore, under the direction of Nicholas Scull surveyor general of the province of Pennsylvania
Description: Anniversary reproduction of the contracted Scull & Heap panoramic cityscape view originally published by London engraver Thomas Jeffreys in 1756 showing Philadelphia from across the Delaware River. Depicts the riverfront (South to Vine streets) developed with residential and mercantile buildings, piers and wharves, and major landmarks. Landmarks (numbered in the print) include Christ Church, the State House, Presbyterian Church, Dutch Calvinist Church, the Court House, Quaker Meeting House, High Street Wharf, Mulberry, Sassafrass, Vine and Chestnut streets, the drawbridge, and "cornmill" on Windmill Island. Pedestrian traffic is visible along the riverfront and heavy maritime traffic, including a ferry transporting cattle to New Jersey, dominates the foreground. Description: Advertisement utilizing classical figures, Gothic-style architectural details, and vignettes to promote the addition of "Chromolithography" to the Ranstead Place lithographic studio tenanted by Duval 1849 -1855. Iconography includes a scene with two male and two female allegorical figures, including one resting on a lyre; a bas-relief depiction of lithographic artists and printers at work at a press, table, and ink stone; and a female classical figure holding a paint brush, and a portrait print of George Washington. Other pictorial elements include portrait profile vignettes, filigree, and floral ornamentation. The floral details surround the several lines of advertising text. Text promotes the "spacious location," "steam power" press, and types of print work executed by the firm. Works include portraits, landscape, anatomical and architectural drawings, machinery, music titles, maps, plans, circulars, checks, bill heads, bills of lading, price current, fac-similes, commercial blanks, and transferring. Title: Episcopal Hospital (Late Leamy estate)
Description: View showing the hospital, also known as the "Bishop Potter Memorial House," opened in 1852 in the donated former residence of Philadelphia merchant John Leamy at Front Street and Lehigh Avenue in Kensington. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the hospital grounds along the landscaped oval driveway in front of the institution. Also shows two figures near the left wing of the building. The hospital, founded by Bishop Alonzo Potter as a religious institution, provided health services and religious services to individuals "without distinction of country, creed, or color" under the administration of church communicants. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story corner property tenanted by the plumbing and gas fitting establishment of William Wright, John C. Hunter, J.H. McFetrich, and Thomas Brown at 900 Walnut Street. Seventeen bays of windows extend the length of the property on Ninth Street. Two women and a young girl stand in front of an unidentified property adorned by a metal skeleton for an awning (left). One man drives a horse-drawn cart north on Ninth Street, while another unloads goods from a dray. Two gentlemen wearing long coats and top hats stand at the Walnut Street entrance to the plumbing store. One of them grasps the handle of a pump in the doorway. Chandeliers and other wares are visible through the large shop windows. Two white horses are hitched to a closed cab stopped in front of the entrance, and a horse-drawn omnibus is partially visible in the background. The name of the business appears prominently on the cornice, and on signboards facing both Walnut and Ninth Streets. Managed at this site beginning in 1855, the store name changed to John C. Title: Awful accident on the North Pennsylvania Rail Road on Thursday July 17th 1856
Description: Disaster scene showing the "Picnic Train Tragedy", the worst rail disaster at that time. Shows the burning wreck near Ambler, Pa. from the collision of North Pennsylvania excursion trains "Shakamoxon," departed from the Cohocksink depot, and "Aramingo" departed from the Wissahickon station. Burning tangled engines and train cars pile up on the single track line in the middle of farmland. Rear cars remain unscathed and a horse pulling a buggy rears up as it approaches the wreck site. Bodies lay near an overturned car in the foreground. One train carried hundreds of children from St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Sunday School in Philadelphia. The crash occurred due to an attempt by the "Shakamoxon" engineer to make up time for its late departure. It collided with the regularly scheduled Aramingo, before arriving at a siding pass. The boilers of the trains collided and caused an explosion that decimated the front cars, but left the rear cars intact. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Also shows a man entering the "Neall & Matthews" office. Image surrounded by decorative border. Description: Advertisement containing a view of the busy foundry in a trompe l'oeil frame. Shows a gentleman, possibly the proprietor, leaving the door of the office connected to the large workshop in which laborers toil on machine parts. A boy carrying a small part walks toward the gentleman. He passes two men talking at the corner of the small office building near the side of the workshop lined by factory debris. On the sidewalk, laborers finish a large gear propped up on a platform. The men are surrounded by machine parts that lie on the ground and line the outside of another factory building. Nearby, two workers with crowbars and a piece of cylinder await a horse-drawn cart being backed up to the curb by a driver. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Evergreen trees protected by iron-work fencing are visible near the entrance. Statuary in recesses, window shades marked with the business name, and a figure of William Penn mounted on the roof adorn the building.
