Title: Two of the killers
Description: View showing two outlandishly-attired members of the Philadelphia gang known as the "Killers" carousing on the street. One sits on a fire hydrant and the other leans against a lamp pole (posted with a "Sale" notice") at a street tenanted by a "Grocery" and adorned with broadsides. The men wear patterned pants, jackets with tails, oversized neck ties, and top hats. One also wears a pin adorned "K." They each have their hands in their pockets and smoke cigarettes. The grocery displays a barrel of brooms in addition to signs reading "Coffee Sugar Tea" and "Teas Coffee 5." The broadsides adorning the opposite building advertise "Auction this Evening" and "Circus The Old Man of the Mountain..... Dan Rice Clown." The playbill is illustrated with a scene of an equestrian trick. Description: View showing the proposed design for a standpipe with an ornate spiral staircase and statute of George Washington to be erected at Thirty-Fifth and Sycamore streets as part of the Twenty Fourth Ward Water Works (i.e., West Philadelphia Water Works). Individuals gaze up at the stucture from its base as other men and women ascend the staircase and view the vista from the observation deck. Completed circa 1855, without the statue, after the designs of engineers Birkinbine & Trotter, the standpipe served as a reservoir for the waterworks located on the west bank of the Schuylkill River above the Fairmount Dam. Description: Exterior view of the two-story Gothic hall adorned with battlements, pointed windows and doors, and a 180-feet-high wood steeple. Constructed between 1808 and 1811, purportedly after the designs of William Strickland, adjacent to brick row houses on the north side of Chestnut Street. Pedestrian traffic in front of the hall includes three men conversing on the sidewalk, a couple strolling by, two ladies walking arm-in-arm, and an older woman moving with a basket balanced on her head. Description: Chaotic disaster scene showing the "Picnic Train Tragedy", the worst rail disaster at that time. Shows the burning wreck near Ambler, Pa. from the collision of North Pennsylvania excursion trains "Shakamoxon," departed from the Cohocksink depot, and "Aramingo" departed from the Wissahickon station. Burning tangled engines and train cars pile up on the single track line in the middle of farmland. People are propelled and jump from the burning railcars. In the foreground, bodies lay within the wreckage as rescuers rush in buckets of water. Others attempt to catch individuals jumping from a burning train car in the rear, carry children's bodies on a gurney, and comfort the grieving. In the lower left, a man wipes his face with a handkerchief as he stands over a legless body on a mattress. Nearby another man holds a body in his arms. Also contains the names of "The Killed" and "The Wounded" printed below the image as well as notice that "Many of the wounded are in a very precarious condition, and the death of several is hourly looked for." One train carried hundreds of children from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church Sunday School in Philadelphia. The crash occurred due to an attempt by the "Shakamoxon" engineer to make up time for its late departure. It collided with the regularly scheduled Aramingo, before arriving at a siding pass. The boilers of the trains collided and caused an explosion that decimated the front cars, but left the rear cars intact. Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. Description: Advertisement with much street activity showing the manufactory and warerooms operated 1856-1878 by Hess at 1434 Coates Street. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Evergreen trees protected by iron-work fencing are visible near the entrance. Statuary in recesses, window shades marked with the business name, and a figure of William Penn mounted on the roof adorn the building. Description: Advertisement utilizing classical figures, Gothic-style architectural details, and vignettes to promote the addition of "Chromolithography" to the Ranstead Place lithographic studio tenanted by Duval 1849 -1855. Iconography includes a scene with two male and two female allegorical figures, including one resting on a lyre; a bas-relief depiction of lithographic artists and printers at work at a press, table, and ink stone; and a female classical figure holding a paint brush, and a portrait print of George Washington. Other pictorial elements include portrait profile vignettes, filigree, and floral ornamentation. The floral details surround the several lines of advertising text. Text promotes the "spacious location," "steam power" press, and types of print work executed by the firm.
