Description: Although Wainwright suggests date of publication as circa 1855, date of circa 1854 is used since Rease relocated to the new business address of 97 Chestnut Street as of 1855., Contains two lines of text below the title advertising the manufactory's improved facilities., Advertisement depicting a corner view of the three building showroom and factory operated by the Schells from 1853 until 1856. J.E. Schell continued the business as J.E. Schell & Company starting in 1857. On Tenth Street, patrons enter the four-story storefront and mantle room adorned with signage and statuary displayed on a second floor veranda. At the corner, a coach waits, the disembarked African American driver standing at the ready. On Vine Street, behind the showroom, a family of passerbys admire the marble statuary, monuments, and headstones in the factory's fenced in yard. Factory laborers load a headstone onto a horse-drawn cart, inspect open crates lining the street, and review slabs of marble outside the factory's storage building. Partial views of adjacent buildings and the "10th" Street carriage are visible.

Description: Cover illustration is a lithograph, tinted with two stones, showing several spectators at a trotting race at the park on the Penrose Ferry Bridge Road near Point Breeze. In the right, several men, in top hats, stand in the judge's stand while male and female club members mob the piazzas of the two-story main clubhouse as the two trotters pulling sulkies race past on the course. A few spectators stand on the grounds and landscaped paths. Also shows a second smaller clubhouse building. The park, established in 1855 by the Point Breeze Park Association of sportsmen, promoted trotting races as agricultural exhibitions to circumvent an 1817 city ban of horse racing. Description: Cartoon mocking 1852 Whig Presidential candidate General Winfield Scott, his abolitionist supporters, and the antithetical party platform. Shows the candidate and his supporters as performers at a horse circus. In the right, Scott, in uniform, struggles to straddle the horse "Slavery Compromise" (i.e., the Fugitive Slave Act) and "Tariff Free Soil" (i.e., prohibition of the extension of slavery) as his exclaims, “If the Southern horse don’t moderate his pace, I shall be down presently and break all my bones! Whoa! Whoa!" Nearby, abolitionist and New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley, fearing he will not "strike on his feet this time" flips head-long into a "Tribune Dung Heap of Abuse and 'isms" next to the "Tribune Building" adorned with signs that promote Scott for president and "No journeyman cut throats." Title: The pious Mr. All-bone, taking leave of his directors previous to his departure for Europe
Description: Cartoon about the Panic of 1857 satirizing the dubious overseas departure of the Bank of Pennsylvania president Thomas Allibone preceding the failure of the financial institution in the fall of 1857. Allibone claimed he departed for Europe for health reasons with the support of the Board of Director. The board later charged he resigned while in debt $200,000 to the bank. Shows the Bank of Pennsylvania board wishing a teary-eye Allibone farewell at the "Steamer Europe Sail" wharf. The board stands on "Bank of Pennsylvania" charters and many sneer and hold handkerchiefs to their faces. To the rear of the group, a white woman "reduced to absolute want" from the bank failure, stands with her children, including a baby at her breast, and asks one of the board members "could you not through your influence, obtain me a situation as housekeeper or school teacher?" The member jeers that his influence is "for his friends" and she should get "some tickets for soup." At the front of the group, the wart-nosed, rotund head of the board, shakes Allibone's hand. He assures the departing president of the entire respect and sympathy for his "good care" of the funds of the "Board, and the Widows, and Orphans." He hopes Allibone will return with "renovated health and strength" as well as a purchased title that includes "Gentleman of the Grand Order of the Rag Mill and the Check Marked Good.", Allibone stands on several sheets of "stock" near his valises. He holds a handkerchief to his face, and carries the book of "Common Prayer" in his coat pocket. He responds that if "a liberal expenditure of THEIR money" restores his health that he will attempt to purchase a title. He also suggests that his well-wisher go to church regularly, keep out of jail, and keep his breeches buttoned up and he "will sail through this crisis with flying colors." In the right, an African American woman peddler holds her nose and states in the vernacular that it is because of the "bad odor of dis paper! won't git much fur dis." Beside her, a white boy fishing at the pier remarks to his wriggling, hooked worm that "yer bound to be catched at last." Also shows an African American man, attired in worn and torn clothing, seated and chewing a stick in front of an overturned barrel while a white cabman races his horse-drawn coach down the street of grocery stores in the background. The proprietor of this hotel, respectfully announces to the public, that he has refitted his hotel and is now prepared to receive his friends and patrons in a manner which he flatters himself they will find that attention to their comforts which will give entire satisfaction. -- This hotel embraces many advantages to the travelling public being contiguous to the great Central and Pennsylvania Rail Road Depot, and in immediate vicinity of the depots of the Baltimore, Wilmington, Pottsville and Reading Rail Roads. Gentlemen mingle on the second-story, arcaded balcony overlooking the street. A large cupola and weathervane surmount the penthouse. Description: Advertisement containing two side-by-side views bordered on top by an ornate floral design. Depicts heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signage advertising "Manufacturers of decorative iron work," "verandahs," and "counters" adorns the building. On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Across the street, near a tree, ladies in heavy capes and holding parasols promenade past a man pointing out the Clay statue to his male companion., Twelfth Street view shows the new iron foundry completed circa 1858 to the rear of the Ridge Avenue works on the 400 block of Twelfth Street. Two laborers steady a horse-drawn cart near the entry to the factory that is adorned with a tower flying a "Wood & Perot" flag. In the street, an omnibus is followed by a volunteer riding one of a two-horse team drawing a steam fire engine. Three boys follow and direct the engine. Across the street, a man, potentially a constable, prepares to open the call box attached to a telegraph pole as a family of five promenades down the block. Description: Advertisement for the Bush Hill Iron Works originally established by Oliver Evans in 1809 and operated by Neall, Matthews & Moore 1846-1854 on the plot of land that is now between Buttonwood and Spring Garden Streets, facing Sixteenth Street. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Also shows a man entering the "Neall & Matthews" office. Image surrounded by decorative border. Description: View showing the proposed building for the mechanic's institute that was erected in 1853 on Williams, i.e. N. 39th, Street above Market Street. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104) "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). At Peterson's, shadowy rows of books and folios, including one titled, "A. Kollner View Philadel," adorn the display windows flanking the closed entry. At Goodyears, a white man and woman couple is visible through the open entry, standing at a counter. A large model boot, and other shadowy merchandise adorn the display windows that are marked with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." A white man with a cane and an excited white boy, near his mother, peer at the displays from the busy sidewalk., Other activity, on opposite ends of the sidewalk, includes a white man paying a white newsboy for a paper, gentlemen in conversation, and a white man, a book under his arm, strolling by. Between the storefronts, a white man descends stairs within a central entryway. In the street, a fancy coach occupied by a white lady and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The women passenger looks with an expression of disdain at the horse of the cavalryman and the white man laborer transporting rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray. Charles Goodyear patented the process to vulcanize rubber in 1844 and oversaw the factory where vulcanized rubber was practically manufactured at Newtown, Connecticut. Description: Lithograph was copied from an engraving originally published in Carl Bernhard Wadstrom's Essay on Colonization (London: Printed for the author, by Darton and Harvey, Gracechurch-Street, 1794-95). As the title suggests, the lithograph shows an insurrection aboard a slave ship. Title: The nigger emperor of Nicuragua [sic] on his throne Attended by Chatfield & his Black guards witnessing the detention of the steamer Prometheus, by the English brig of war Express, at San Juan
Description: Racist political cartoon satirizing the fictitious "Nigger Emperor" of Nicaragua during the "Prometheus-Express" incident of November 1851, which threatened the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 between the United States and Britain to abstain from attempting dominion of Central America. Depicts the Emperor as a Black man, partially undressed, attired in a military uniform with epaulettes, a black plumed hat, a sword on his waistband, and black boots. He sits atop a barrel labeled “Jamaica Rum.” He has one boot off that exposes his sock. His trousers are off and draped over his right arm. He smiles with a cigar in his mouth and carries a bottle labeled “Brandy” in his left hand. He looks towards Frederick Chatfield, the United Kingdom’s consul in Central America from 1834 to 1852, standing in the right. Chatfield holds his hands up and says, “They shall pay the money or be blow to attoms for their temerity, let me again entreat your Majesty to condesend (sic) to draw your breeches over your imperial shins.” The Emperor gestures with his right hand to the two ships in the harbor and replies in the vernacular, “Nebber mine, Massa Chatfield, wedder to warm for wear beechum, Yankee hab to cum back and pay money to dis nigger, ya, ya, ya.” Behind the Emperor, several Black guards, attired in tall hats, smile and stand in formation. Also in the print is a small black dog sniffing the Emperor’s sock., The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850 made Greytown, Nicaragua a free port, denying the British revenue. To circumvent this, the British charged harbor fees. On November 21, 1851, Cornelius Vanderbilt’s ship Prometheus refused to pay the British harbor fees. The British brig o’war Express fired three shots across the bow of the Prometheus. Vanderbilt then paid. However, when the ship arrived in New York he took his case to the U.S. government with the U.S. wanting Britain to withdraw from Central America. In early 1852, the Nicaraguan government sought to assert its authority over the Miskito kingdom. Title: The little giant - in the character of the gladiator
Description: Cartoon portraying Stephen Douglas as a gladiator to symbolize his split with the Buchanan Administration on the admission of Kansas to the Union as an enslaving state. Depicts Douglas, attired in a tunic, armor, and sandals, defiantly holding his shield of "Popular Sovereignty, The Majority Rule" and sword labeled "Freedom of the Elective Franchise" in the center of a battle arena. He prepares to use his armament to fight against the admission of Kansas under the pro-slavery Lecompton Constitution, which was fraudulently ratified because of the barring and abstention of free-state voters. To the left of Douglas, President Buchanan, attired as a gladiator, fends off Robert J. Walker, the Kansas Territory Governor and an advocate of popular sovereignty. In the right, a gladiator representing the power of the "Free Press" trounces the gladiator representing the "Washington Union," the Administration's organ. On the ground lies the Roman standard with an eagle, which reads “S.P.Q.R. Title: Sunday laws hanging the cat on Monday for killing the mouse on Sunday
Description: Cartoon mocking Philadelphia's Sunday Laws depicting the moment before "Thomas" the cat will be hanged for his murder of a mouse on the Sabbath. In the center, shows the gallows surrounded by a line of white policemen, attired in uniforms and caps. In the left, three white hangmen, attired in suits, hold onto the rope and pull on the unlooped end of the noose. Two of the men smile sinisterly, while the third man wipes his tears with a handkerchief as he says, “Alas poor Tom!” To the right, an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature with exaggerated features, carries the "Blood Tub."
