Title: The Clay compromise - a settler
Description: Racist cartoon satirizing the Clay Compromise of 1850 concerning the extension of slavery to the territories. Depicts a prostrate enslaved African American man, portrayed in racist caricature, who is being pulled by ropes from each end by a Northerner and Southerner. The Northerner states, "We are content with the Compromise," and the Southerner states, "An equal division is fair." Standing over the enslaved man is Henry Clay, who is poised with a sword to cut him in two. William Lloyd Garrison rushes to stop Clay, stating "let the Union go; but spare the man!" A Quaker man confers with a minister about the compromise, saying "Well I'm very glad that Friend Clay has interfered." The minister responds that he hopes the question is settled because his parishioners have been quarreling so long that they almost forgot to pay him. Description: Exterior winter view of the hall as it looked on February 22, 1852, with adjoining fenced property, adorned with an American flag, and containing the district's police station and Mayor's office, on the busy, snow covered Third Street between Buttonwood and Green streets. Several warmly dressed white pedestrians, hall officials, and a policeman mill about and converse on the sidewalk; white children throw snowballs and play with a sled; horse-drawn sleighs pass by; white men shovel snow off the street and hall steps; and an African American man carrying a basket of celery and a dead goose stops in the street and looks behind him and toward the passing sled. Description: Advertisement showing the facility at Fountain Green (Fairmount Park) for the brewery established in 1844 by Charles Engel & Charles Wolf. Includes the wash house and entrance to the vault on the lowest level of the hill, the office (middle level), fermenting and brewing building, and storage house with fermenting cellar (upper level). Horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels exit from different level entries to the buildings and a laborer working on a barrel toils within the brewery. Two gentlemen stand on the porch to the office and a woman with children uses the property for recreation. In the foreground, a Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad locomotive pulls a train car full of passengers, a double-decker horse-drawn omnibus travels, men ride on horseback, and individuals (woman with child and two men) stroll and descend the river embankment to greet a man arriving by rowboat. A weather vane designed as a beer barrel adorns the storage house. Engel & Wolf purchased Fountain Green in 1849 to dig lager beer vaults to ferment and age the beer brewed at Dillwyn Street. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in two outdoor settings. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as tree branches, filigree and scissors. Cherubic figures sewing and ironing flank the title at the bottom of the print. Upper panel shows 5 men, 1 woman, 4 boys and 2 girls socializing on a dirt pathway overlooking the city. At the center of the panel, the oldest boy sits on a bench telling the younger children a story. Three men converse on the left side, one with his back to the viewer, and on the right side, two men and a woman stand looking in the direction of the others. All of the men wear or hold hats and are attired in suits, including two in striped pants. The woman wears a full brown dress decorated with floral designs and alternating bands of different fabric.
