Title: [Dyottville Glass Works]
Description: View showing the Dyottville Glass Works, in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the 50 buildings of the premier glass works, including the factory adorned with the sign "Dyottville Glass Works", farmhouses, and barns. Workers enter the factory and walk on the grounds. Also shows several skiffs docked in front of the complex. The works also had a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada March 15th 1856 in which 60 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat under the winter night sky as rowboats race to and from the wreck. In the foreground, two survivors sit and cling to cakes of ice near floating debris. In the right of the image, her sister ferry "Dido" travels to the rescue, the ship's reflection visible in the water. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Description: Advertisement showing the 4-story ornamented sandstone storefronts completed in 1853 after the designs of Gustav Runge at 145, 147, 149 (i.e., 300 block) Market Street. Businesses include Maddock Raymond & Co., watches & jewelry, Spring Oaks & Co., dry goods (145); M. L. Hallowell & Co., importers & jobbers in silk goods, Guillou Walton & Co., hosiery & linen goods (147, later 333); and De Courcey Lafourcade & Co., importers of mens wear and cloth warehouse. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic. An older gentleman walks near two women peering into the windows of Lafourcade as a man stands at the entrance of Hallowell. In the street, a horse-drawn dray races past two laborers loading crates onto three drays parked in front of Hallowell & Co. Description: View showing the ruins of the mansion on the estate west of the Schuylkill River (West Fairmount Park) purchased by legislator William Bingham in 1797. Debris rests on the steps of the shell of the residence. Trees surround the property. The mansion, originally built around 1773 for Pennsylvania governor John Penn, later served as the residence for Bingham's son-in-law Alexander Baring, i.e. Baron Lord Ashburton, in the early 19th century. Title: West view of Schuylkill Falls Laboratory. Powers & Weightman, manufacturing chemists, Philadelphia
Description: View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near a covered bridge in Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several stone buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Near the Schuylkill River in the foreground, other laborers move crates by a pulley on a pier. Also shows a man on foot and a wagon entering the bridge, a steamboat traversing the water, and a train traveling past the complex and several adjacent lots of pasture land in the background. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. A second factory complex operated between 9th, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Description: Life membership certificate containing a "View of Monrovia," the original settlement of Liberia, the African American colony established by the American Colonization Society in 1822. Depicts a landing party with well-dressed African American emigrant men arriving to a crowd of male and female well-wishers and family at the palm-tree lined shore of the colony. New colonists depart the boat and run to relatives as Liberian men raise their hands in greeting. White sailors man the small boat. In the background, another landing party with new colonists sails from the transport ship. The settlement of Liberia is visible in the distance. Title: Francis Bacon & Co.'s coal yard. Spruce Street Wharf, Schuylkill Philadelphia Vessels loaded with dispatch, by steam power. Office no. 53 South Fourth Street
Description: Advertisement showing the busy coal yard along the Schuylkill River. Yard workers haul cauldrons of coal by pulley and load and transport trucks on a multi-level wharf elevated above and surrounded by piles of coal. A schooner docked near two long boats at the end of the wharf receives a haul of coal from two chutes. A skiff and rowboat flank the boats. Opposite the schooner, a man sails a skiff named "Go On" past a tugboat. Signage for the coal yard is visible behind the tug and several industrial buildings line the wharf in the background. Title: Murphy & Allison Car builders. 1908 Market Street, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. In the foreground, men and boys, across from two men shaking hands, inspect an ornately painted "City Passenger R.R." car on display in the street in front of the factory. Nearby, a boy admires an elegantly dressed lady while a newsboy hawks a paper to a gentleman on promenade with two ladies who pass a woman, possibly attired in mourning garb. Murphy & Allison assumed proprietorship of Girard Tube Works, manufacturer of wrought iron gas tubes, in 1856 and began construction of cars for the City Passenger Railways circa 1857. Title: Diploma awarded by the Lebanon County Agricultural and Horticultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with seven vignettes related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show a small herd of sheep; a farmer at his plow; a group of cattle; a town hall; a pair of horses; an iron worker with his assistant at a forge (resembling John Neagle's "Pat Lyon at his Forge"); and a gathering of barn animals. Animals include a pig, chickens, ducks, geese, and a turkey. Border also includes farm produce such as squashes, cherries, grape vines, herbs, and plants in addition to agricultural and farm implements, including a butter churn, rake, hoe, basket, pitcher, pail, sickle, shovel, and an ax. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Also shows barrels being hoisted outside of the refinery building. Description: Genre winter scene showing male students frolicking in the snow at the east end of the main building of the co-educational Quaker boarding school. Boys build snowmen, have snow ball fights, and sled on the snow-laden grounds covered with footsteps. Westtown was established in 1794 by the Society of Friends as a boarding school for boys and girls. The campus was separated into the girls' and boys' bounds, i.e., yards for recreation. Description: Life membership certificate containing a montage of plants, animals, minerals and fossils to represent different fields of the natural sciences, i.e., natural history, taught at the institute. Iconography encircles an oval containing the certificate text. Includes a bat for "Mammalia"; a human skull for "Anatomy"; an eagle for "Ornithology" perched on a slab with rocks and minerals for "Mineralogy"; a butterfly for "Entomology"; stems of flowers and plants for "Botany"; a thorny fish for "Ichtheology"; pre-historic crustaceans for "Palaeonotolgy"; the skeleton of an elephant for "Comparative Anatomy"; a shell for "Conchology"; a rattlesnake for "Herpetology"; a horseshoe crab for "Crustacea"; and Fossils - "Botany," Entomology," "Crustacea," and "Zoology" showing a fossilized plant, fish, dragon fly and lobster. Filigree adorns the corners. Wagner Free Institute was founded in 1855 by philanthropist and professor William Wagner to provide free public education in the sciences. Description: Membership certificate containing views and vignettes related to the Pennsylvania Militia. Central view shows troops on display in front of their tents at a militia campground. Men and women spectators watch the troops from near the tent of the commander in the foreground. The commander's tent, flanked by guards on foot and horseback, and four other tents, faces away from the troops who stand in formation.
