Title: Robert Wood's railing, architectural & ornamental iron works, Ridge Road below Spring Garden St., Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the long three-story, brick factory occupied by Robert Wood's iron works at 1126 Ridge Avenue. The central portion of the building looms a few feet over the wings, and is adorned by tall, narrow windows on the second story, with a decorative cornice topped by a statue, bell cupola, and advertising flag. Statues of a lion and two dogs adorn an overhang near the open doorway of the iron foundry inside this central portion, under which a man and woman enter the office and warerooms. Visible inside the factory are several men at a forge, along with laborers working in the left and right wings. A man driving a horse-drawn company carriage emerges from the right wing. Title: Abbott & Lawrence. Liberty Stove Works, Brown Street above Fourth St. Philada James J. Abbott. Archilus Lawrence
Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. Title: Bennett & Co. Tower Hall, clothing bazaar No. 182 Market St, between Fifth & Sixth. Philadelphia Wholesale & retail. J.M. Bennett. J. C. Umberger
Description: Advertisement showing the four-story, tower-shaped clothing store adorned with signage at 182, i.e., 518 Market Street. Statuary and a flag reading "Tower Hall" embellish the building and signs advertise "Quick Sales" and "Small Profits." A store clerk consults with a patron near one of the four open entryways to the establishment. Clothing adorns the entries and hangs from racks inside the store in which another clerk assists a patron at a display table. Coats and other piles of clothing are visible in the upper floor windows. In front of the store, several crates line the sidewalk. A laborer nails one shut as other workers load a horse-drawn dray. A few of the crates are marked with addresses, including Independence, Mo., Nashville, Tenn., and Augusta, Ga. The three-and-one-half story "Clothing Ware Rooms" stands adjacent to the "Tower Hall." Signage advertising "Shirts, Collars, Bosoms, Cravats, Wrappers, Hosiery, Handkerchiefs &c. &c. &c. and [Edward] "Allman Hatter" and [Robert] "Winchester Grocer" adorns the facade. Patrons exit and enter the doorways of the building in front of which a laborer loads a "Bennet & Co. Tower Hall Clothing Bazaar" wagon. On the sidewalk, near the delivery worker, a woman strolls near two boys in conversation and a man carrying a large package. Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Outside the complex, a driver handles a four-horse team plodding to pull a truck loaded with two large machines as other factory workers transport planks, carry crates, mill about with their tools, drive a dray, and stand at a shed facing the street. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of the hat store established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the busy courtyard of the "N.H. Graham & Cos. Curing, Packing & Smoking Establishment" on the 2000 block of Filbert Street. Horse-drawn wagons and drays enter and exit the yard between the stable and "Office" under an archway with the name of the business. The wagons are marked with the company name and the drays carry barrels marked with the name of their contents and recipient, including hams, beef, pork, and shoulders and "Miller & Brown, Packers, Cincinatti." The hinds of horses are seen through the stable entry near where barrels of beef are lined and a gentleman departs the office next to which several more barrels are lined. A gentleman passes next to them on the sidewalk. Within the courtyard, men cut and pack meat into barrels near and under sheds. Title: H. S. Tarr's marble yard, no. 274 Green St. above Seventh Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Title: Lippincott & Co. south west corner of Fourth & Market St Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the wholesale and finishing department (est. 1850) of the manufactory for the hat business established in 1827. Oakford stands with a business client in the center of the room across from his steam powered leuring lathe and several male employees at work. The laborers stand and form hats at their stations, which line two-thirds of the room. The stations include a drawer as well as a cubby for pieces under construction. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of a later store, at 624 Chestnut Street, of the the hat establishment established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. An arch labeled "Oakford" is visible to the center of the room that leads to the women's and children's section at the rear of the store. A clerk assists a woman patron seated near a rack of hats and across from a woman and girl as they browse. Large tiles line the floor and the ceiling is plain. Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Signage listing the name and services of the company, and manager Edward S. Sanford, adorns the five-story building. Title: Headquarter Infantry Corps National Guards [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing views and vignettes related to the Pennsylvania Militia. Central view shows troops on display in front of their tents at a militia campground. Men and women spectators watch the troops from near the tent of the commander in the foreground. The commander's tent, flanked by guards on foot and horseback, and four other tents, faces away from the troops who stand in formation. Also includes vignettes above, to the sides, and below the certificate text. Top vignette shows an exterior of the National Guards Hall built 1856-1857 at 518-520 Race Street. Troops form lines in front of the building. Vignette is in an oval frame that is partially covered in laurel, and bordered by cannons, swords, a drum, a spy glass, bayonets draped in cloth and adorned with wreaths, and medals. Side vignettes depict National Guard soldiers on stone pedestals. The militia man on the left wears a winter uniform and backpack, holds a rifle, and stands in front of the American flag. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as foliage and filigree. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Three men attired in suits, top hats and canes converse. One man leans against a writing desk, one shows his back, and the other man is seated in a wingback chair . At the center of the panel, a woman wearing a full dress with wide sleeves stands with a boy, a girl, and a puppy. A man wrapped in a lavish robe and fez hat sits on chaise lounge, looking right in the direction of two men who stand and converse. Lower panel shows a country scene.
