Title: Civil War scrapbook of envelopes and portraits
Description: Scrapbook containing portraiture, predominately patriotic envelopes, of Civil War military and political figures. Majority of the envelopes issued by prolific New York publisher Charles Magnus, with several from his series "Generals of the Potomac Army" and "Heroes of Successful Expeditions." Also contains portrait prints, stationery, and non-portrait and ephemera materials, including newspaper clippings, manuscript letters, autographs, playbills, an illustrated songsheet, and a performance program. Several of the portrait prints were originally published in the 1861-1863 volumes of "The Rebellion Record" edited by Frank Moore., Majority of clippings detail the controversial death and funeral of Col. Edward D. Baker. Manuscript letters include correspondence from 28th PA Regt. Beck Band musician, Samuel A. Murray to John McAllister, Jr. about collecting Southern Civil War relics and letters. Also includes W.S. Hancock correspondence denying a citizen's pass to cross military lines. Songsheet, performance program, and majority of playbills relate to special performances, including an 1862 Washington birthday commemorative program, at the 28th Pennsylvania Regiment military camp. Ephemera materials include a facsimile of the correspondence from General Grant to General Buckner for unconditional surrender following the Battle of Fort Donelson, February 16, 1862 and plain envelope covers inscribed by Col. Frank P. Blair and General Henry Halleck (General-in-Chief). Other materials include a print and newspaper clipping showing the Merrimac and Monitor; a cartoon satirizing supporters of defeated 1860 Constitutional Unionist presidential nominee John Bell; a Ulysses S. Grant family portrait photomechanical reproduction from the Photo History of the Civil War (1910); and the autographs of generals John W. Geary, Samuel P. Heintzelman, and William S. Rosencrans. Description: Illustrated humorous trade card depicting a man with a long beard toting a bag and hat in his right hand about to open the door to enter a bathroom. The card opens up to reveal a disheveled-looking man in suspenders, perhaps one who has never seen an indoor bathroom, washing his face in the toilet. Title: Smith Memorial postcards
Description: Contains views of the Smith Memorial gateway designed by James Windrim & Son and built 1897-1912 at the Forty-first Street entrance to Fairmount Park. Built in honor of Civil War soldiers. Consists of two pedestals flanking Concourse Drive near Memorial Hall. Both sides have palladian arches and equestrian bronze statues on columns. Title: Washington Monument postcards
Description: Depicts equestrian statue of George Washington on a pedestal surrounded by four fountains and allegorical figures that represent four rivers: the Delaware, the Hudson, the Potomac and the Mississippi Rivers. Statues on the lowest tier portray "typical" American human figures and animals. Designed by Rudolf Siemering in 1897 and unveiled at the Green Street entrance to Fairmount Park. Title: Strawberry Mansion postcards
Description: Contains views of Strawberry Mansion in Fairmount Park including the entrance stairway with a group of women and children; the drive and a partial view of the Strawberry Mansion trolley bridge; the fountain statue; the spring; the top of Strawberry Hill showing people picnicking and reclining on the green and several views of the mansion house. Judge William Lewis commissioned the mansion house, also known as Summerville, in 1789. In the 1820s Joseph Hemphill bought the property and added two wings to the house. His son Coleman grew strawberries from roots imported from Chile, giving the property its popular name, Strawberry Mansion. The house became a picnicking spot and restaurant in 1835. Title: Arnold mansion postcards
Description: Exterior views of front facade of Mount Pleasant Mansion (i.e. Arnold Mansion) built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: Lemon Hill postcards
Description: Exterior views of front facade of house and entrance stairway commissioned by Henry Pratt in 1799 on land called "The Hills" by the previous owner, Robert Morris. Pratt purchased the land at a sheriff's sale after Morris claimed bankruptcy. Morris's villa had been destroyed by fire, leaving only the greenhouse, which Pratt retained when he built Lemon Hill.
