- Exterior view of front facade of the colonial mansion, Laurel Hill located on Edgeley Drive at the corner of Fairmoutn Avenue. The central portion of the house was built circa 1767, the single story addition circa 1800 and the octagonal wing after 1837. Built for Rebecca Rawle and her second husband, Samuel Shoemaker. The house was purchased by physician Philip Syng Physick in 1828 and it passed to Physick's daughter Sarah Randolph who in turn sold it to the Fairmount Park Commission in 1869. - Founder's Week postcards commemorating the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia. Copies of William Birch's engraved view of High (Market) Street from Ninth depicting a detachment of the First City Troop of Philadelphia drilling on horseback. The troop promenades up the busy street where several horse-drawn carts and a dray travel and several pedestrians, including an African American man and boy (in the right), watch the guard and/or stroll the tree-lined sidewalks. A market shed is seen in the distance. The First City Troop, one of the oldest continually mounted U.S. military units, was organized in 1774 to defend against British invasion. The troop used a variety of arenas to perform drills including circuses, riding schools, and various public grounds. Founder’s Week celebrated the 225th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia, October 4-10, 1908. - Price Homestead, Ladies' Club House, Manheim Grounds postcards
- Description
- Exterior views of the octagonal shaped Price Homestead, incorporated into the Germantown Cricket Club (or Manheim Grounds) as the Ladies' Club House. The ladies were responsible for maintaining the garden between the club and the dormitories. They were offered a bicycle membership in the winter months and were also provided with two putting greens. Whist matches (the forerunner of bridge) were popular in the 1890s., The Germantown Cricket Club was established in 1854. General George Meade opened the playing grounds in Nicetown where the Germantown Club played cricket against their rival team, the Young America Club. In the late 1880s the two clubs were consolidated into one, and in 1889 the combined organization moved to the Manheim grounds on land formerly owned by the Littell and Price families. McKim, Mead & White designed the main clubhouse (Gentlemen's Clubhouse) in 1891.
