Title: Pawson & Nicholson Photograph Album
Description: Photograph album compiled by James B. Nicholson containing predominantly portrait photographs of prominent local and national members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and their families, including men, women, and children. Photographs depict full-length, bust-length, and vignette portraits; group portraiture; and collages. Several male sitters wear the regalia of the Odd Fellows and most sitters are fashionably attired. Group portraiture depicts employees of Pawson and Nicholson in front of the bookbinding shop (139 S. Seventh), and rosters and meetings and excursions of members of the fraternal organization (1870s-1880s), including Warrior Lodge, no. 873. Collages include portraits of the Rulafson family of San Francisco and examples of work from the respected photographic firm Bradley & Rulafson. Also includes images of the photography department and sculpture at the Centennial Exhibition (1876); photographic reproductions of a Sir Walter Scott manuscript donated to the Sanitary Fair (1864), and an Odd Fellow membership certificate and medal; and a John Sartain engraved portrait of "E. Grand Captain General of Pennsylvania" Varhan Smith.

Description: Group portrait showing a line of eight men, including an African American employee and possibly co-owner Balthazar Stahl (third from right), standing in front of the flower store with large display windows marked "LaRoche & Stahl." Bouquets of flowers, floral wreathes, and other floral arrangements are displayed. A retracted awning with the name if the business adorns the building. A large garland of flowers is weaved across the awning frame. Potted plants line the base of the building and entryway near where the men stand. In the far left, the back of a horse traveling in the street near men patronizing a vendor's stand at the side of the flower store is visible. In the far right, signage for the adjacent business is partially visible. Florist Maximilian F. La Roche partnered with his brother-in-law Batlhazar Stahl in 1878. The partnership also managed several large greenhouses in Collingdale, Pa., which specialized in chrysanthemums and roses. Previously, La Roche had operated his own floral business in Philadelphia beginning circa 1876 when he purchased Brooker & Co. at 1319 Chestnut Street. La Roche removed his store to 1237 Chestnut in 1881. Title: Civil War scrapbook of envelopes and portraits
Description: Scrapbook containing portraiture, predominately patriotic envelopes, of Civil War military and political figures. Majority of the envelopes issued by prolific New York publisher Charles Magnus, with several from his series "Generals of the Potomac Army" and "Heroes of Successful Expeditions." Also contains portrait prints, stationery, and non-portrait and ephemera materials, including newspaper clippings, manuscript letters, autographs, playbills, an illustrated songsheet, and a performance program. Several of the portrait prints were originally published in the 1861-1863 volumes of "The Rebellion Record" edited by Frank Moore., Majority of clippings detail the controversial death and funeral of Col. Edward D. Baker. Manuscript letters include correspondence from 28th PA Regt. Beck Band musician, Samuel A. Murray to John McAllister, Jr. about collecting Southern Civil War relics and letters. Also includes W.S. Hancock correspondence denying a citizen's pass to cross military lines. Songsheet, performance program, and majority of playbills relate to special performances, including an 1862 Washington birthday commemorative program, at the 28th Pennsylvania Regiment military camp. Ephemera materials include a facsimile of the correspondence from General Grant to General Buckner for unconditional surrender following the Battle of Fort Donelson, February 16, 1862 and plain envelope covers inscribed by Col. Frank P. Blair and General Henry Halleck (General-in-Chief). Other materials include a print and newspaper clipping showing the Merrimac and Monitor; a cartoon satirizing supporters of defeated 1860 Constitutional Unionist presidential nominee John Bell; a Ulysses S. Grant family portrait photomechanical reproduction from the Photo History of the Civil War (1910); and the autographs of generals John W. Geary, Samuel P. Heintzelman, and William S. Rosencrans. Also contains a small number of non-Civil War era items, including an A. & J.B.
