Description: Collection of graphic materials documenting world's fairs of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries, predominantly the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 (Philadelphia) and Exposition Universelle de 1867 à Paris. Includes stereographs, trade cards, collecting cards, lantern slides, and souvenirs. Graphics also depict the Great Exhibition of 1851; New York Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations (1853-1854); the Exposition Universelle de 1867 a Paris; the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878; the Chicago World's Fair of 1893; the Pan American Exposition of 1901 (Buffalo, N.Y.); the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 (St. Louis, Mo.); and the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926 (Philadelphia). Description: Includes an illustrated billhead and advertisement. Billhead contains image captioned "Resurgam" and showing a phoenix rising from a mortar of flames marked "WP" in a cluster of clouds. Billhead also contains ornamented type and ornamental details. Advertisement depicts an exterior view of the Weeks & Potter four-story storefront. Signage adorns the buildings and merchandise is visible in the first floor display window and in those on the second floor. Building also adorned with a model of a phoenix rising from a mortar of flames and a flag with the name of the firm and mascot. Firm name on flag transposed in image. Advertisement promotes Weeks & Potter's flavoring extracts, home remedies, cologne, olive oil, wines, and toilet articles on verso. Weeks and Potter, the partnership between Andrew G. Weeks and Warren B. Potter established circa 1852 as dealers of patent medicine, began to manufacture their own medicines in the 1860s. Title: [Collection of letterheads and billheads of Wells, Richardson & Co., later Wells & Richardson Co., wholesale druggists, Burlington, Vt. completed to C. N. Williams, Elizabethtown, N.Y.]
Description: Collection includes letterheads and billheads, majority illustrated, dated between June 13, 1873 and September 30, 1886. Illustrations depict three variant exterior views of the firm's storefront on College Street in the 1870s and 1880s. Earlier views also show signage adorning the side of the building and street traffic, including a man pulling a handcart, and horse-drawn carriages and wagons. Later view captioned "125 to 133 College St., Burlington, Vt." shows the two buildings of the firm in front of which pedestrians walk and several horse-drawn wagon and carriages travel in the street. The prints also contain ornamented type and lettering and pictorial details. Items billed with totals ranging for $2.25 to $114.26, include syringes, indigo, spirits oil, plasters, hair brushes, glue, varnish, Down's Elixir, Kedders Pastiles, lime cement, vanilla, and vaseline. Correspondence relates to receipt of, changes to, and charges for shipments, as well as prices of the merchandise. The firm established as Henry & Co. in Waterbury, transferred to Burlington in 1868 and was renamed Wells, Richardson, & Co. in 1872. Description: Billheads containing vignette exterior view of the six-story building adorned in signage of the Philadelphia firm established circa 1868. A pyramid shaped display is visible in the lower floor show window. Also shows heavy street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn delivery wagon marked "Drugs." One of the prints also contains two "reduced copies of our beautiful large Chromo lithographs Show cards in six colors, handsomely framed in walnut and gilt, given away with the first order of the goods represented." The views show horses, cows, sheep, and pigs gathered in landscape settings near a railroad bridge and farm, and mountains and a lake. Billheads also contain "Terms," including claims policies and the honoring of retails prices, and a list of "Some of Our Other Specialties.", Engravers include Smith Bros., P.2011.46.10 completed in manuscript to C.N. Description: Illustrated flier for "comic head" mechanical target issued by the Mutual Novelty Manufacturing Company. Contains image of target (Patented Aug 28 1877), which includes the racist, comic head of an African American clown, portrayed in caricature with a slack jaw and grotesque features, and pictorial details of the "Target Arrow" (Pat. Sep. 5 1876). Flier also contains vignette of "Toy Target Arrow For Boys and Girls." Shows a child's hand pulling the arrow through an egg-shaped barrel. Vignette surrounded by advertising text reading "Throws the Arrow very accurately, and affords hours of amusement for both young and old. Made of hard wood, finely polished, beautifully colored. Description: Trade card with a bust-length portrait of a man on the recto and text composed in a tongue-in-cheek manner promoting a hardware dealer as a murderer - of prices - on the verso. Portrait depicts a young, bearded man. His hair is parted to his far left. He is attired in a coat with small lapels., Date inferred from the construction of the name of engraver., Advertising text on verso: Murder! On the other side is given a fair likeness of a notorious character still at large and wanted for the murder of high prices on Hardware. He is said to have made the assault with an Iron Will forged to a Cast-Steel Determination. Description. The accused is less than 16 hands high, weighs less than two hundred pounds, has two large patches on the seat of his pants, and wears a 50-cent shirt. When last seen he was selling Hardware at very reasonable prices on the banks of the raging Mahoning.
