Title: [The Singer Manufacturing Company trade cards]
Description: Series of illustrated trade cards depicting comic views entitled "This coat was sewed on a Singer machine," "What I have sewed together and no one rip asunder," "Making ends meet," and "As ye sew so shall ye rip," showing a man caught and hanging from a windowsill by his coat looking in the face of a frightened cat with its back arched; a couple attired in their wedding clothes, which Cupid stitches together behind them; a boy sewing the ends of two cat's tails together with a Singer sewing machine. Two other boys hold the horrified looking cats, while a dog sits near the machine; a boy sitting on the edge of a sewing machine with his back to the viewer as another boy sews; musicians playing french horn, flute, and baritone; and two men lounging in a hay field, one of them asleep and mischeviously being prodded by the other with a twig, with a post and rail fence in background. Description: Series of illustrated trade cards for Samuel Shoneman's "button house" and ladies' trimmings store at 101 South Eleventh Street, later 1018 Chestnut Street, in Philadelphia. Illustrations depict sprays of flowers; flowers in a vase; children carrying a potted flowering plant; a girl picking and smelling flowers; putti; a boy straddling a music stand containing sheet music and playing the violin or fiddle; a male figure attired in a hat and ruffled collar standing near a scythe and hourglass holding a hoop through which a frog leaps; and a view showing the treaty made at the village of Shackamaxon (i.e. Penn Treaty Park, Kensington) on the Delaware River. Title: Smith brothers chemically pure Borax
Description: Racist trade card depicting a well-dressed white woman, two white housekeepers, and one African American housekeeper using Smith Brothers Chemically Pure Borax to complete various household tasks while standing in a kitchen. The white woman in the left of the image sprinkles Borax on to a group of cockroaches on the floor. At the center of the image, one white woman holds a white cloth with ruffles while another white woman applies Borax onto it. The African American woman stands in the right background of the image and looks at the two women. Her left hand is submerged in a tub of water. A stove with pots and pans, a table with an iron, and a clothes line are visible in the background. The African American woman is portrayed with exaggerated features. Githens & Rexsamer was a Philadelphia-based exporter and importer of groceries and canned goods., Title from item., Advertising text printed on verso: Directions. Washing. - Dissolve one heaping tablespoonful of Borax in hot water for every tubful of clothes; soap all of the most soiled places and rub on the board through one water; after rubbing throw the pieces intoa tub containing boiling water and Borax; let them remain there while the second tub of clothes is being washed; rinse in one plain water; do not boil the clothes. Starching. - One teaspoonful Borax to one pint boiling starch, adds greatly to the gloss, afact not generally known. To Prevent Mtohs [sic.] - Sprinkle floor with the powder before laying down the carpets, and put it with the clothes when packed away. Removing Cockroaches. - Sprinkle floor, leaving places open for escape, or to kill them, add one part Borax to two parts powdered sugar. Rough face or chapped hands. - One tablespoonful Pulverized Borax to one quart hot water, apply night and morning with a sponge or cloth. Dressing Ulcers, Wounds, Bruises, Sprains, Chilblains and Removing Inflamation. - One tablespoonful Pulverized Borax to one pint hot water, saturate a piece of lint with same, hanging it up to dry, then use for a dressing. For Bathing. - Always add Pulverized Borax to the Bath, it softens the water. Especially use it for infants and children. Arresting Fermentatoin. [sic.] -One-half thimbleful Pulverized Borax to one quart cream or milk, will preserve them perfectly sweet. Ephemera includes programs, invitations, menus, and place, dance, holiday, and tally cards. Majority of the cards are printed, with some designed by hand. Holiday cards often depict religious, sentimental, and genre imagery, including children, animals, flowers, landscapes, and costumed and historical figures., Scrapbook also contains ribbons; die-cut tokens, including girl-shaped calendars and the story "Rosy Cheeks"; newspaper clippings, including Semple-Watson, Philler-Winsor, and Frothingham-Harris wedding announcements; correspondence to Harris from her father while abroad in San Francisco, New Zealand, and Hawaii (1870-1872) and from her brother while visiting their grandmother in New York (1870?); Harris's 1878 "American School Diary" of her grades; a striped tissue paper coverlet; a needle work sampler stitched "Susy"; a watercolor marine view "by Arthur Hoff '89"; a telegraph message envelope; a family group portrait photograph; and trade cards and advertising circulars and booklets. Trade cards and advertisements promote "The Philadelphia Weekly Press" (designed as a miniature edition); "The History of Jumbo"; Enoch Morgan’s Sons Co . Hagelberg., Cataloging funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012., Housed in phase box., Gift of Elizabeth McLean., Inventory available at repository., Mary Campbell Harris (known as Minnie), daughter of U.S. Naval Commander Thomas Cadwalder Harris (1826-1875) and Mary Louisa Bainbridge Jaudon (1835-1914), was born in New York on December 27, 1862. Descended from Commodore William Bainbridge and Thomas Harris, the first surgeon-general of the United States Navy, Harris and her family resided in Philadelphia by 1866. In 1893, she married John L. Wilson (b. 1850), later treasurer of Coal Land Corporation and the couple resided in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. Harris was active in the Sedgely Club and often attended and held card parties, teas, and luncheons noted in the local press. Harris spent her later years residing in Bryn Mawr where she died circa 1948.
