Title: The old First Independent Church corner Broad and Sansom streets. Rev. John Chambers, pastor
Description: Exterior view of the First Independent Church, later renamed Chambers Presbyterian Church, built 1831 at the northeast corner of Broad and Sansom streets. Also shows a partial view of an adjacent building and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians include a man with a cane, a woman with a parasol, and two men greeting one another. Church housed the independent congregation of Rev. John Chambers. Congregation admitted to the Presbytery in 1873., Inscribed on the mount: In March of 1830, the cornerstone was laid. In June of 1831, the Church was opened for religious worship. In April, 1853, the Church was enlarged by an extension Eastward of Fifteen feet and the erection of a portico in front. Title: Plan of the United States dry dock, at Philadelphia, on the new system of the sectional floating dock, basin, & railways, now constructing by contract with Mess. Dakin & Moody Area available for docking in the plan 350 by 90 feet, 31, 500 square feet. Area available for docking in the U.S. dry dock at Norfolk, 210 by 60 feet, 12, 000 square feet. It will be observed that area available for docking in this dry dock is twice and a half greater than in the U.S. stone dry dock at Norfolk, enabling the former to receive a vessel covering twice and half as much space as the utmost limit of the latter. It will also be observed that the efficiency of the Norfolk dock, is limited to docking one ship of the line at a time, of about 200 feet in length, whereas the new Philadelphia dock, will be able to dock three war steamers of 350 feet in length each, and ten ships of the line all at the same time. The Norfolk dock cost $962, 459 and the cost of one on that plan capable of taking only one vessel 350 by 90 feet, estimated on the same basis would be $2, 406, 147 or about three times the contract price of the Philadelphia dock
Description: Plan showing the future dry dock at the first U.S. Navy Yard established by shipbuilder Joshua Humphreys and Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert in 1801 on the Delaware River in Southwark. A three-masted frigate rests in dry dock on land and a three-masted sidewheeler rests in dry dock on the floating dock in the river. Two workers stand on the deck of the sidewheeler. Between the frigates, completed hulls are visible in four storage bays. Across from the bays, a hull under construction rests in scaffolding. Tools and machinery lay near the hull. Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established at the 100 block of Franklin Street in 1841. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. At the corner, two gentlemen converse as a driver via a three-horse team cart transports a large cylinder in which he stands. Smoke rises from three smokestacks. Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia branch (est. circa 1843) of the rail express service company started by Alvin Adams of Boston in 1840. Shows a line of freight cars being pulled by a fireball and lightning across train tracks on a stone culvert in a wilderness setting. The cars are marked with the city and name of its recipients, including Boston & New York, Adams & Co.; Philada. & Baltimore, Adams & Co.; Baltimore, Washington & Richmond, Rogers & Co.; Baltimore & Wheeling, Green & Co. Title: Reliance Portable Boat Company's line of portable iron boats for the transportation of goods between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Upper image depicts a bird's eye view of a locomotive that is hauling boat sections approaching an incline to the canal. A long canal boat traverses the waterway. In the background, a farm and farmland are visible on the numerous hillsides. Lower image depicts a close-up view of the portable boats being hauled on the round-bottomed trucks by a locomotive exiting a tunnel and passing dwellings along the route. Description: Proof print of a panoramic view showing the Delaware riverfront near the Walnut Street Wharf. Includes from south to north the merchant house of Samuel and William Welsh (218 S. Del. Ave.), Bloodgood's Hotel (10 Walnut, infamous for the 1855 Jane Johnson fugitive slave case), the wharf, the Cope Line Ticket office (1 Walnut, major passenger service for Irish immigrants operated by the merchants, the Cope Brothers), and Bethel Mariner's Church, i.e., Mariner's Presbyterian Church (organized 1830 on Water St. above Walnut St.). Several vessels, including one at the Walnut Street Wharf and two Liverpool packets of Cope, are docked in the choppy waters of the river. Title: Eugene Roussel's celebrated mineral waters in glass botttles for hotels, families & shipping
Description: Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. Materials displayed in the windows include a stuffed bear, bottles, mason jars, canisters, and framed certificates. A drain pipe adorns the building. Also contains vignettes above and below the title showing the business's mineral water delivery wagon, and silver medals awarded to the perfumer by the "Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania, 1824" and "Reward of Skill and Ingenuity, 1842." Title: Jules Hauel's eau lustral hair restorative For the restoration, growth, beauty and preservation of the hair
Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer at 120, i.e., 324 Chestnut Street. Shows two well-dressed women in a boudoir that is decorated with carpet, drapes, and a candlelabra. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair."
