Description: Exterior view of the hall containing the district's police station and Mayor's office completed in 1848 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with an American flag and including a steeple built by Jacob Berger with a clock made by T. Tyson. Description: Print invoking the treaty made at the village of Shackamaxon (i.e. Penn Treaty Park, Kensington) on the Delaware River. Penn, with his delegates, displays a large sheet of paper to a delegation of Delaware Indians. A crate, barrels, and textiles lie on the ground between the two groups of men. Title: The Smile that was childlike
Description: Print depicting characters from Bret Harte’s 1870 poem “Plain Language from Truthful James” later reprinted as “The Heathen Chinee.” The narrative of the poem focuses on two white men, Bill Nye and “Truthful James,” and a Chinese man named Ah Sin playing the card game Euchre. Bill and James believe Ah Sin is “childlike” and does not comprehend how to play the game. The print shows Bill and James standing in the left on a dirt road and showing playing cards to Ah Sin, who looks on with his hands in his pockets. Ah Sin is depicted in racist caricature and wears a queue hairstyle, a conical hat, gold hoop earrings, a blue tunic and pants, and cloth, slip-on shoes. In the background are mountains and a partial view of a cabin. Later in the poem’s narrative, Bill cheats playing the game by having cards up his sleeve. When Ah Sin plays a card that James already has, it is discovered that Ah Sin is also cheating with decks of cards hidden in his sleeves. Bill proceeds to fight Ah Sin. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Title: View of the reception of the 29th Regiment, P. V., at Philadelphia
Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Also shows two boys in a scuffle among the spectators., Buildings line the route, most in shadowy, partial views except the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home at Race and Crown (opened December 1863) and the adjacent buildings near the top of the view. Women crowd the windows of the home and a large American flag marked "Cooper Shop Soldiers Home" stands in front of the building. Also contains the names by Field and Staff Officers, Non-Commissioned Staff, and by Company, of the "Veterans of the 29th," including the African American Company K in addition to the names of the "Board of Managers of the Cooper Shop Soldiers' Home." The procession commenced at about one o'clock from Market Street Bridge down Market Street to Twenty-First Street eventually arriving at the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home where the members of the 29th regiment had dinner before proceeding to the National Guards Hall (518-520 Race Street) to be welcomed by Colonel John Price Wetherill. The order of the procession was as follows the First City Troop; 27th New York Battery; Liberty Coronet Band; Henry Guards; four companies of invalids corps; Provost Guard; discharged members of the regiment; Birgfield's Band; former (Murphy) and present (Rickards) commander of the regiment; Lieut. Zulick of the regiment; the regiment; female family members; First Regiment, Jefferson Coronet Band, Pennsylvania Military Institute cadets, City Council members, and other guards and regiments; and lastly the ambulances of the firemen. Winner showing the expanded paper mill originally built for William Dewees in 1731 at the foot of Wise's Mill Road on the bucolic Wissahickon Creek. Mill includes the main building, boiler house, machine room, and chimney. Mill was rented by Charles Magarge (President of Bank of Germantown) in 1844 and purchased by him in 1853 and thereafter expanded to house a Fourdrinier Paper machine. It was the first mill to use wood pulp to make paper. Description: Exterior view showing the greenstone church built 1858-1860 at 39th Street (i.e., Saunders Avenue) and Powelton Avenue in West Philadelphia. Description: View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Within the grounds, visitors stroll on the paths between and enter the several exhibition buildings, including the Main Building (center), Restaurant, House of Public Comfort, Carriage and Wagon House, and Poultry House.
