Description: Commemorative print depicting Daniel Webster's noted "Seventh of March Speech" delivered in support of Henry Clay's proposed legislation to prevent Southern secession and to address the extension of slavery, known as the Compromise of 1850. The amended compromise, passed in September 1850, included the admittance of California as a free state and the strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Law in favor of the South. Description: Commemorative print containing facsimiles of the signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence within an ornamental border. In the top of the border are allegorical figures of Justice, depicted as a white woman carrying scales and a sword, and Liberty, depicted as a white woman attired in a liberty cap and carrying a spear and shield. An eagle stands between them next to a crest of an American flag. Along the sides of the border are the state seals of the original thirteen colonies. Description: Commemorative print showing the ornately decorated grand lodge room on the second floor of the New Masonic Hall built 1853-1855 after the designs of Sloan & Stewart at 713-721 Chestnut Street. Rows of cushioned benches with carved backs line the room adorned with gold vaulting over the turquoise colored walls and ceiling. Two daises with lavish thrones adorned with ornate Gothic-style canopies containing sculpted allegorical female figures interrupt the seating. The larger dais, which predominates the background and over which a large gilt chandelier hangs, contains several Gothic-style chairs, two chests, and sculpture displayed on pedestals and in alcoves. The smaller dais, including a chest, stands in the right of the image. The building was sold circa 1873 following the completion of the new Masonic Temple on North Broad Street and later razed by fire in 1883., Embossed stamp of printer on recto: L.N. Title: Pulling down the statue of George III "By the Sons of Freedom." At the Bowling Green City of New York, July 1776
Description: Print commemorating American independence after the painting by religious and historical artist, Johannes A. Oertelat, at the New York Historical Society. Depicts white men attempting to topple the equestrian statue of King George following the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the foot of Broadway. At the base, men pull on ropes wrapped around the sculpture while men from behind use rods to knock it over. In front of the pedestal, an African American man has fallen over on the ground. An excited crowd of spectators, including well-to-do and working class men, women, and children cheer, point, hold torches and mallets, and trample upon the broken fence once surrounding the statue. In the left is a Native American man attired in a feather headdress and carrying a spear. Several dogs run in the foreground. Title: Cornwallis is taken! The watchman's cry - Philadelphia 1781
Description: Print commemorating the surrender in 1781 of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown depicting the watchman's purported moonlit announcement of the event on October 22nd at the Philadelphia residence of Thomas McKean, the president of Congress. Near the "Geo. Washington" tavern, the white watchman, one hand raised, a lantern in the other, his mouth open and with a few teeth missing, cries the news to the crowd of men, women, and children surrounding him and McKean. McKean, wearing a silken robe, chin in hand listens. His face portrayed with a look of contemplation. The crowd, many in nightclothes hold candlesticks, pray, cheer, and listen solemnly. Description: Commemorative print containing a pasted lithograph of an exterior view of the Presbyterian church with colonnade portico (811 N. 7th Street). Lithograph partially printed over and surrounded by an ornate chromolithgraphed decorative border and pasted letterpress cutouts. Shows pedestrian traffic in front of the church built 1853-1854 under the supervision of the building committee of Rev. Dr. J. F. Berg, George Hawes, D. W. C. Moore, and Charles Collins Jr. Pedestrians include a man carrying a bundle on his shoulder and a boy playing with a hoop. Congregation organized in 1852 from members withdrawn from the First German Reformed Church. Chromolithographed border comprised of a wreath of different flowers and cutouts with gold printed letterpress text describing, and listing prominent figures in, the history of the church., Text cut-outs surrounded by chromolithographed bead-like strands.
