Title: Account book of Mary Langdale Coates, 1748-1770
Description: Account book for the shop Mary Langdale Coates kept from the time of her husband Samuel's death to her own death. The shop was located on the west side of Second Street, north of Market. Her customers included Elias Boudinot, Timothy Matlack, Israel Pemberton, Sr. and Jr., Elizabeth Coates Paschall, Philip Syng, Catherine Wistar, and Benjamin Franklin. Bound in vellum; ledger binding with tackets and metal bosses. Numerous scraps with holograph inscriptions, laid in. Accompanied by separate index volume (31 cm)., Most of Benjamin Franklin's transactions occurred when Franklin was out of town or (after 1757) out of the country, and therefore were the purchases of Deborah Franklin. Title: Things left in books collection Undated Paper dolls, Undated
Description: These paper dolls are of two varieties, illustrations carefully cut out to create a separate figure, and hand-made dolls made from available bits of paper. In the first category, we have two frogs, a rat, a floral bouquet, and four people. In the second category, we have three people, two figures on horseback, a horse, and a sun. The horse is made of glossy embossed black paper. Two of the people have separately made clothing. A cut-out illustration of a gentleman has a note on the back: Found in N.T. of the Pictorial Bible NY 1847., Cataloging funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012., This collection includes paper dolls found in books that are part of the Library Company's collections. Description: The bookmarks are made of perforated cardboard, often attached to a length of ribbon. The cardboard has been used as a base for needlepoint or embroidery, and one includes bead work. All but one include a text, with one text in Hebrew.
