Depicts people walking along the beach near a three-masted sailing ship, identified as the "Robert Morgan" from New Haven, Connecticut. The ship came ashore at Atlantic City on January 9th, 1884, during the Great Storm, and passed within a few inches of the immense frame work of Applegate's Ocean Pavilion, making a narrow escape from a total wreck and now lies high and dry uninjured on the beach. In 1883 J.R. Applegate purchased 100 feet of beach property in Atlantic City at the foot of Tennessee Avenue, next to his "picture galleries." He built a two tier pier extending 625 feet beyond the boardwalk with an amusement pavillion at the outer end.
