- Description
- Shows the well-attended fair on grounds landscaped with dirt paths and a track, tenanted by tents and sheds adorned with American flags, and enclosed by a white fence. Visitors enter by foot, on horseback, and carriage through an arched opening near the "Ticket Office" as a lone carriage departs through the opposite exit way. Throngs of people spill out from the temporary shelters while individuals ride horseback, travel in carriages, and rest on a mound of dirt nearby. Also shows horses racing on the track and trees lining the back of the property in the background. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." - Ladies' invitation to an annual ball for the Lithographic Printers Union illustrated by a fairy-like female figure with wings surrounded by flower bushes. - Advertisement containing a large central text panel with a background printed in color in a rainbow style and surrounded by an ornate decorative border. Border contains symbols, allegorical figures, and pictorial details representing the United States and patriotism (the American flag, Liberty, a shield adorned with the banner "E Pluribus Unum," and an eagle); Pennsylvania (a portrait of William Penn and the Pennsylvania state seal); and trade, commerce, and farming (barrels, crates, bundles of goods, a scythe, a hoe, sheaves of wheat, a mast of a sailing ship, and a land/marinescape view with a railroad and "John Fitch" steamboat). Some goods are marked "R & G.A.W." or "R." or "C.R." Border also includes a maternal female figure, attired in Roman garb, holding two children, and wrapped in a banner reading "Love One Another"; medals, some with classical figures and one with the text "Reward for 1849"; a book open to an illustration titled "Chemistry Analysis"; scroll-like ornaments; grape vinery; and floral and botanical details. R. & G. A. Wright, a partnership established about 1845 between Richard and George A. Wright, was a premier Philadelphia perfume manufacturer. The business was noted in the mid-19th century as the largest manufactory of its kind in the United States, England, and France. The Wright partnership relocated to 624 Chestnut Street about 1860. The business operated as R. & G. A. - Quirky advertisement showing heavy street traffic in front of the clothing store, designed as a medieval tower, at 518 Market Street. Patrons and pedestrians gather near the entrance of the store across from a saddled horse and a dray loaded with crates parked in front of the building. Other street traffic includes a stopped "Hestonville, Market Street, Cambridge Ferry" omnibus from which a lady departs from the rear while a chariot-like horse-drawn vehicle advertising "Tower Hall Clothing Bazaar Market Street" passes her. The unique vehicle is followed by an ornately painted "West Philadelphia" street car crowded with passengers, including men seated on the roof beside the driver. Also shows neighboring buildings. - Chaotic street scene after the 1827 painting Five Points by George Catlin depicting the early 19th-century New York City lower income area east of City Hall. Shows several white and Black men and women, individually, as couples, and in groups at the crossroads of Orange, Anthony, and Cross Streets. The streets are lined with places of "entertainment," "lodgings," and grocery stores primarily selling liquor. - Sheet music cover containing a street scene with the Gothic-style hall built 1853-1855 after the designs of Sloan & Stewart at 713-721 Chestnut Street. Also shows slight views of adjacent businesses, including Washington House hotel (709-711) and heavy pedestrian and street traffic. On the sidewalk, men and women stroll and convene in conversation. In the street, a horse-drawn omnibus filled with passengers and a carriage with passengers travel past two men on horseback and couples crossing the street near a dog.
