Description: Although Wainwright suggests date of publication as circa 1855, date of circa 1854 is used since Rease relocated to the new business address of 97 Chestnut Street as of 1855., Contains two lines of text below the title advertising the manufactory's improved facilities., Advertisement depicting a corner view of the three building showroom and factory operated by the Schells from 1853 until 1856. J.E. Schell continued the business as J.E. Schell & Company starting in 1857. On Tenth Street, patrons enter the four-story storefront and mantle room adorned with signage and statuary displayed on a second floor veranda. At the corner, a coach waits, the disembarked African American driver standing at the ready. On Vine Street, behind the showroom, a family of passerbys admire the marble statuary, monuments, and headstones in the factory's fenced in yard. Factory laborers load a headstone onto a horse-drawn cart, inspect open crates lining the street, and review slabs of marble outside the factory's storage building. Description: Cover illustration is a lithograph, tinted with two stones, showing several spectators at a trotting race at the park on the Penrose Ferry Bridge Road near Point Breeze. In the right, several men, in top hats, stand in the judge's stand while male and female club members mob the piazzas of the two-story main clubhouse as the two trotters pulling sulkies race past on the course. A few spectators stand on the grounds and landscaped paths. Also shows a second smaller clubhouse building. Description: Cartoon mocking 1852 Whig Presidential candidate General Winfield Scott, his abolitionist supporters, and the antithetical party platform. Shows the candidate and his supporters as performers at a horse circus. In the right, Scott, in uniform, struggles to straddle the horse "Slavery Compromise" (i.e., the Fugitive Slave Act) and "Tariff Free Soil" (i.e., prohibition of the extension of slavery) as his exclaims, “If the Southern horse don’t moderate his pace, I shall be down presently and break all my bones! Whoa! Whoa!" Nearby, abolitionist and New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley, fearing he will not "strike on his feet this time" flips head-long into a "Tribune Dung Heap of Abuse and 'isms" next to the "Tribune Building" adorned with signs that promote Scott for president and "No journeyman cut throats." Title: The pious Mr. All-bone, taking leave of his directors previous to his departure for Europe
Description: Cartoon about the Panic of 1857 satirizing the dubious overseas departure of the Bank of Pennsylvania president Thomas Allibone preceding the failure of the financial institution in the fall of 1857. Allibone claimed he departed for Europe for health reasons with the support of the Board of Director. The board later charged he resigned while in debt $200,000 to the bank. Shows the Bank of Pennsylvania board wishing a teary-eye Allibone farewell at the "Steamer Europe Sail" wharf. The board stands on "Bank of Pennsylvania" charters and many sneer and hold handkerchiefs to their faces. To the rear of the group, a white woman "reduced to absolute want" from the bank failure, stands with her children, including a baby at her breast, and asks one of the board members "could you not through your influence, obtain me a situation as housekeeper or school teacher?" The member jeers that his influence is "for his friends" and she should get "some tickets for soup." At the front of the group, the wart-nosed, rotund head of the board, shakes Allibone's hand. He assures the departing president of the entire respect and sympathy for his "good care" of the funds of the "Board, and the Widows, and Orphans." He hopes Allibone will return with "renovated health and strength" as well as a purchased title that includes "Gentleman of the Grand Order of the Rag Mill and the Check Marked Good.", Allibone stands on several sheets of "stock" near his valises. He holds a handkerchief to his face, and carries the book of "Common Prayer" in his coat pocket. He responds that if "a liberal expenditure of THEIR money" restores his health that he will attempt to purchase a title. He also suggests that his well-wisher go to church regularly, keep out of jail, and keep his breeches buttoned up and he "will sail through this crisis with flying colors." In the right, an African American woman peddler holds her nose and states in the vernacular that it is because of the "bad odor of dis paper! won't git much fur dis." Beside her, a white boy fishing at the pier remarks to his wriggling, hooked worm that "yer bound to be catched at last." Also shows an African American man, attired in worn and torn clothing, seated and chewing a stick in front of an overturned barrel while a white cabman races his horse-drawn coach down the street of grocery stores in the background. Gentlemen mingle on the second-story, arcaded balcony overlooking the street. A large cupola and weathervane surmount the penthouse. Description: Advertisement containing two side-by-side views bordered on top by an ornate floral design. Depicts heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signage advertising "Manufacturers of decorative iron work," "verandahs," and "counters" adorns the building. On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Across the street, near a tree, ladies in heavy capes and holding parasols promenade past a man pointing out the Clay statue to his male companion., Twelfth Street view shows the new iron foundry completed circa 1858 to the rear of the Ridge Avenue works on the 400 block of Twelfth Street. Two laborers steady a horse-drawn cart near the entry to the factory that is adorned with a tower flying a "Wood & Perot" flag. In the street, an omnibus is followed by a volunteer riding one of a two-horse team drawing a steam fire engine. Three boys follow and direct the engine. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. In the street, a fancy coach occupied by a white lady and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The women passenger looks with an expression of disdain at the horse of the cavalryman and the white man laborer transporting rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray. Two dogs greet each other in the street near the vehicle. Also shows shadowy figures, a man and two women, in upper floor windows of the buildings. Charles Goodyear patented the process to vulcanize rubber in 1844 and oversaw the factory where vulcanized rubber was practically manufactured at Newtown, Connecticut. Peterson established his magazine Peterson's Ladies national magazine in 1840 at 102, i.e., 306 Chestnut Street. Both establishments operated at the pre-consolidated address in 1856. Description: Advertisement showing in the distance a compound of large mill buildings belonging to Joseph Ripka's textile manufacturing business, situated between the east bank of the Schuylkill River and the Manayunk Canal. Two men in top hats stand and converse in the foreground, while a man stands in a rowboat nearby. Buildings and trees dot the hilly landscape behind the mills. Ripka relocated to Manayunk in 1828, developing one of the largest textile businesses in the United States. Description: Advertisement showing the multi-storied hotel at 139, i.e., 227-229 North Third Street. Guests sit, stand, and converse on the second floor balcony protected by an awning printed with the names of the owners. Others stand under the balcony and near the "Private Entrance" to which a lady approaches. Dogs walk near an omnibus parked in front of the hotel. Patented March 9, 1858, by Albert Potts, Philadelphia The main object of this improvement is to afford increased postal facilities for the deposit of mailable matter by attaching the boxes to lamp posts at short intervals; the convenience of the light from the lamp is a desideratum the advantages of which are evident. Title: Insurrection on board a slave ship
Description: Lithograph was copied from an engraving originally published in Carl Bernhard Wadstrom's Essay on Colonization (London: Printed for the author, by Darton and Harvey, Gracechurch-Street, 1794-95). As the title suggests, the lithograph shows an insurrection aboard a slave ship. Description: Cartoon lampooning the Republican Party's constituency of radicals and reformers who supported the first Republican presidential candidate, John C. Frémont, in 1856. In the right, Frémont receives his eclectic array of supporters and promises "You shall all have what you desire--and be sure that the glorious principles of popery, Fourier, ism, free love, womans rights, the Maine law, and above all the equality of our colored brethren, shall be maintained, if I get into the Presidential chair."
