- View showing the U.S. Naval Asylum, the convalescence home for retired sailors built 1827-1833 after the designs of William Strickland at 2420 Gray’s Ferry Avenue. A small grove of trees adorns the yard in front of the colonnade portico entrance of the three-story building known as Biddle Hall. Two men with canes talk in front of the stone and iron-work fence protecting the property. - View of the lush grounds of the mission begun in the Black emigrant colony of Liberia in 1835 to educate and spread the gospel in Africa. Depicts the "mission houses," "school house," houses of a "native laborer" and "a colonist," and "native cattle broken to the yoke." A Black man guides a cattle-drawn cart on the dirt road outside of the fenced mission fields where Black laborers work. Begun under the auspices of the American Colonization Society and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church, the mission moved on March 4, 1837 to Mt. In the foreground, elegantly dressed women and men, sit, and stand on the veranda admiring the vista as street and pedestrian traffic approaches and departs from the covered Upper Ferry Bridge. Traffic includes horse-drawn carriages, a man on horseback, and a woman walking and holding a parasol. Canal barges travel under the bridge and in the canal lock across from the water works. The water works include the engine house, mill house, and pavilions on the mound dam and on reservoir hill. A water fountain and trees complete the view. - Racist caricature ridiculing the 1829 male fashion fad of striped shirts depicting an African American man-woman couple discussing the "new fashion shirt" that he is wearing. In the right, the man stands slightly turned and hands on hips. He is attired in a brown waistcoat with tails, a red vest, a blue-striped shirt, black cravat, tan pants, yellow gloves, black shoes, and a neck fob. He holds a black top hat in his left hand. In the left, "Miss Florinda," stands, forward facing, and holding a fan near the right side of her face. She wears a red and yellow headpiece over her hair that is in a top knot. She is attired in a yellow calf-length, cap sleeved dress with floral details, red and white trim, and décolleté neckline; white opera gloves; ankle-laced slippers; flower-detailed stockings; and jewelry, including earrings, necklace, and bracelets. - Advertisement for Nathan Dunn's Chinese collection housed in the lower floors of the Philadelphia Museum also known as the Chinese Museum that was built 1836-1838. Contains an ornamental border, vignettes, a landscape view, and descriptive text. Border includes filigree and 4 banners adorned with Chinese lettering. Vignettes show a Chinese woman from high society at leisure; a Chinese peasant man, and peasant woman with baby; and a Chinese fisherman on his boat. View shows a Chinese landscape including a pagoda and sailing vessels on the water. The text, engraved by the Warrs, describes the exhibition space (154 x 65 feet) and collection, including "50 Figures As Large As Life" in "Native Costume" from the "highest Mandarin" to the Blind Mendicant" and "Many Thousand Specimens Both in Natural History and Miscellaneous Curiosities," illustrating the "Appearance, Manners, & Customs of more than 300,000,000 Asiatics." Includes billheads, bills of laden, checks, maps and plans, marine and landscape views, portraiture, animal portraiture, sheet music, professional cards and advertisements. Some of the corners of the prints curl up. Pictorial elements of note include a portrait of Aloys Senefelder, the inventor of lithography; the business card of lithographic artist "A. Newsam"; advertising prints showing Duval's "Lithographic Establishment," and the Merchant's Exchange; and sheets of advertisement text in script promoting Duval's ability to "execute orders at short notice," his types of prints, and the advantages of the "facility" and "cheapness" of "facsimiles" for businesses. - Portfolio containing three prints depicting African American men jockeys, portrayed in racist caricature, speaking in the vernacular, and attired in long underwear, during key moments from a two-mile heat at the Washington Race Course in Charleston, South Carolina. Pl. 1 shows the beginning of the race with three jockeys reigning in and spurring on their horses. Caption reads: At the tap of the drum they jump off from the stand, Be the track deep in mud or heavy with sand, At a pace which at once makes fast ones extend, An e'en the best winded cry bellows to mend. Pl. 2 shows two jockeys racing past a fence as one prepares to whip his mount that trails behind. Caption reads: And now they have reach'd the third mile, second heat, The mare is still going, the horse is dead beat; Say Sambo "Me know how Mass him do it, so me gib him de whip, and make him stick to it." The Washington Race Course, also known as the Charleston Race Course, was developed by 1792 and served as the one-mile track for the South Carolina Jockey club annual one-week races in early February. - Anti-abolition print celebrating the 1835 attack on William Lloyd Garrison in Boston by "gentleman of property and standing" preceding his scheduled speaking engagement before the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society. Depicts Garrison at the center of an angry mob of white men. He has a noose around his neck and his newspaper "The Liberator" in his pocket and yells, "Help Children of Africer - help brothers." Scottish abolitionist George Thompson, who was rumored to be the Society's speaker, flees the scene attired in a women's clothes. He states with a Scottish burr that he will not be a "Martyr in sie black cause."
