Description: Advertisement for the resort area operated by Caspar Boenning at the Delaware River Island containing a "General View of Smith's Island (Fare 6 Cts To Go & Return)" surrounded by 8 scenes showing island amusements and entertainments. Central view depicts a sailboat passing two ferries of people approaching the pier adorned with a tall flagpole and signage for "C. Boenning Baths." Individuals walk on the pier and paths on the island near resort and residential buildings, including the residence of Robert W. Smith. A ferry boat travels through the channel in the right of the image. Upper surrounding vignettes include 3 titled scenes "Residence of Thomas G. Smith," "Swimming & Shower Bath," and "Residence of Robert W. Smith." Shows visitors strolling the building and grounds of the residences. Robert Smith residence also shows a dog swimming and a man on a skiff in a reservoir besides the fenced dwelling. At the bath for men and boys, individuals attired in swim trunks swim, go down a water slide, and dive from a plank and a small raised platform in the center of the pool. Others partake of the waterfall-like shower to the right of the pool and the shade provided by roofing covering parts of the poolside. Title: United States Army Hospital, Philadelphia This is one of the largest army hospitals in the world it is capable of accommodating 3000 men, it has two dining rooms, each 775 feet long, the whole establishment covers twelve acres of ground, and is enclosed by a fence, 14 feet high, the surgeon in charge is Doctor Isaac J. Hays, the distinguished Arctic explorer, who was a former companion of the lamented Doctor Kane
Description: Bird’s eye view showing the Satterlee U. S. General Hospital, opened June 9th, 1862 at Forty-fourth Street and Baltimore Avenue in the farmland of West Philadelphia. A horse-drawn wagon, a man pushing a handcart of linens, and a line of pedestrians approach the entrance of the hospital complex that is guarded by a soldier. Within the complex, visitors stroll and a troop of soldiers drill in the central courtyards bordered by over twenty wards. Also shows a neighboring building, soldiers reclining near the fence of the complex, and a soldier on horseback. Description: View showing the "dwelling house" hotel built on Walnut Street between 33rd and 34th streets for the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Guests stand on the porch of the twenty-six house hotel and elegantly dressed men, women and children stroll the grounds in front of the hotel. The house number of each of the twenty-six properties, from 3300-3350, is labeled above the roof line. A Chestnut and Walnut Street streetcar filled with passengers travels east as horse-drawn carriages and coaches travel in both directions on Walnut Street. The hotel, built on inexpensive land considered undesirable for a permanent hotel, was composed of rows of several houses that were to be later sold or leased as individual dwellings. Title: [Certificate of membership on the committee of ships and ship builders in behalf of the Great Central Fair of the States of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware] Great Central Fair, for the United States Sanitary Commission. Philadelphia June 1864
Description: Committee membership certificate containing six vignettes and two scenes related to ship building and the Sanitary Fair. Scenes at the top and bottom edges show ships under construction at dry dock and visitors entering the Union Avenue entrance of the fair. Ship building scene shows several ship builders at work in front of and on the hull of a ship at dry dock at the river. A completed ship on a floating dry dock and ships in the water complete the view. Scene also includes a large America Flag incorporated as a pictorial element from the bottom scene and the motto "The Wealth and the Strength of the Nation." The fair scene shows throngs of people entering the arch-shaped entrance to the central passage of the fair site at Logan Square. A large flag pole ascends from the building. Vignettes create a side border and depict workshop scenes of the different professions within ship building. Laborers form the hull of a rowboat, sand and shave wood planks and huge spars (i.e. masts), sew sails, blacksmith using an anvil and hot coal from a furnace, and craft parts of the rigging. Many of the scenes include the tools of the trade, raw materials, and views out of the open entryways of the workshops toward vessels on the river. Vignettes surrounded by scroll flourishes. Also includes the names of committee members by their profession - Ship Builders, Boat Builders, Ship Joiners, Ship Smiths, Spar Makers, Riggers, Block Makers, and Sail Makers. Description: Civil war-era advertisement containing seven titled views promoting the manufactory (orginally established in 1836 as a foundry for castings) on the 400 block of Washington Avenue. Central view shows the "Front View" of the foundry. Soldiers march in front of the "Southwark Foundry" building that is adorned with signage advertising "Merrick & Sons Engineers & Machinests." An omnibus stops near the foundry to allow the passing of troops who are greeted by a small group of women. In the foreground, a six-horse team truck transports a large pipe, as behind it, a truck without a load follows. A family waits to cross the street because of the trucks. Also shows a rail truck loaded with barrels and large cylinders parked in front of the loading bay of the factory. Across the street men inspect large pipes on blocks in the left of the image. Complex contains several buildings, including a "boiler works," "steam works," an "office," "ship house," and "smith shop." One of the buildings contains a weather vane adorned by the figure of William Penn. Teams of several horses haul materials on trucks past the boiler and steam works. Laborers, including men attending to a massive pipe in a yard lined with steam engines and other machinery, work on the docks, piers, and boats at the complex. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Title: Breuker & Kessler, lithographers, South West Corner Seventh & Chestnut Sts "Know all men by these presents: that Breuker & Kessler of Philadelphia, possessing ample facilities are prepared to execute in the finest style of the art, all orders for lithographing, including bonds, certificates of stock and deposit, checks, drafts, notes, letter note and bill headings, bills of exchange, cards, insurance policies, blanks etc. also show cards and labels in colors. Having given special attention to the engraving and printing of bonds and by using a combination of geometrical lathe and rosette designs we are able to produce a class of work so intricate as to prevent counterfeiting, it being impossible to imitate the same with any degree of accuracy. In witness whereof we have caused to be printed this sample in the form of a bond and have hereto attached our signatures, this first day of January, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy four
Description: Advertisement for the lithographic establishment in the form of a $500 bond, with several small illustrations within the security designs. At top, within a scroll flanked by flags and military gear and overtopped by an eagle, a miner with pick and shovel and a farmer with pitchfork illustrate the motto "oro y plata." At left, a figure of liberty personified stands on a globe girdled by the motto "[e plu]ribus unum." At lower right, a reclining figure uses a pair of compasses. Bond Certificate" placed above 16 numbered rectangular "cards" marked "Breuker & Kessler, lithographers, Philadelphia." Verso covered with printed floral decoration. Title: America Fire Engine Co. of the city of Philadelphia
Description: Fire company membership certificate containing two side panel views, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. The left panel shows firefighters running from the fire house on Buttonwood Street, below Third Street. Two men stand lookout on the tower above the house, as others pull the fire engine from the garage. The right panel shows the fire company attempting to extinguish the January 14, 1869 fire caused by an explosion of a steam boiler at the southeast corner of Ninth and Chestnut Streets. Flames shoot from the top of three adjacent businesses on land formerly occupied by the Burd Mansion including, Howell & Brothers, paper hanging (900 Chestnut Street); J.M. Hafleigh, dry goods (902 Chestnut Street); and J.F. & E.B. Orne, carpets & oil cloths (904 Chestnut Street). The center vignette, below the membership text, depicts a man standing in front of the two horses that are hitched to a carriage pulling the fire company's engine. At the top of the certificate, American and Pennsylvania flags flank the image of lady liberty sitting on the wing of an eagle. With a lightning bolt in her left hand, she floats above a banner that reads "Allways [sic] ready and willing to assist". Fire fighting equipment, including a helmet, engine, and bugles, are drawn as decorative elements interspersed with the side panel views.
