Title: Independent Order of Odd Fellows [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate for members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows containing a decorative border of Gothic elements and emblems, vignettes, and scenes representing the degrees, tenants, and activities of the benevolent organization. Scenes show odd fellows assisting the indisposed and enfeebled, tutoring children, and assisting in a burial. Vignettes depict emblems of the five degrees that include the fache, globe, a bee hive, coats of arms, columns, Bible, Moses's rod, the dove, the brazen serpent, skull and cross bones, the moon, the sun, a cornucopia and scale. Also contains the female allegorical figures "Friendship, Love, and Truth" with a small child; the all Seeing Eye below the motto "In God We Trust"; and the seal of the Odd Fellows. Seal includes the motto "Relieve the Distressed, Bury the Dead and Educate the Orphan. Title: The Albion Society. [membership certificate] Established Decr. 18th 1855
Description: Membership certificate for the society "established at Philadelphia for the advice and assistance of English men in distress" containing a view of Dover, England. Depicts men dragging a boat on to the coastline near the white cliffs, Dover castle, and piers. Ships sail on the turbulent waters. Also contains a blue ribbon adorned with the seal of the society. The society also aided the wives, widows, and children of members and sought to "promote social intercourse among members.", Not in Wainwright., Issued to John F. Smith on February 13, 1875. Title: Certificate of Honorary Membership of the Weccacoe Fire Company. Philadelphia
Description: Honorary membership certificate containing vignettes of Weccacoe Fire Company engine houses and firefighting equipment between 1840 and 1860 within a decorative border adorned with filigree, bugles, and axes. American flags, laurel wreaths, and an eagle with a shield surmounts the text in the central portion of the certificate, below which is an 1860 view of the fire company’s engine house on the 100 block of Queen Street in Southwark. Fire fighters and wagons loaded with equipment congest the street in the foreground. A large American flag flies atop the roof of the engine house. Left and right panels contain smaller views of the 1840 firehouse and its hand-pumper fire engine and the three-story, enlarged engine house and a steam fire engine from 1850. Title: Decatur Steam Fire Co. membership certificate
Description: Membership certificate containing a vignette of a steam engine in a rural setting, presumably Frankford. Also contains filigree and cornice details, including American eagles holding shields, and the letter "D" ornamented with anchor details. The fire company stationed in Frankford was instituted in 1803 and incorporated in 1842. Description: Certificate containing a scene depicting the biblical passage Luke 18, verse 16. Shows Jesus, seated, surrounded and receiving children from their parents. Description: Membership certificate containing a border comprised of vignettes, filigree, and other pictorial details. Vignettes depict "Love for your members in sickness & in health" showing a sick bed scene; "Purity of Heart & Life" showing an allegorical scene with a woman dressed in white standing in the forest near a lake and fountain; "Fidelity to your solemn obligations" portraying a scene of a member taking his oath in a parlor; and a scene of a man sitting in bed and reading. Description: Life membership certificate containing a montage of plants, animals, minerals and fossils to represent different fields of the natural sciences, i.e., natural history, taught at the institute. Iconography encircles an oval containing the certificate text. Includes a bat for "Mammalia"; a human skull for "Anatomy"; an eagle for "Ornithology" perched on a slab with rocks and minerals for "Mineralogy"; a butterfly for "Entomology"; stems of flowers and plants for "Botany"; a thorny fish for "Ichtheology"; pre-historic crustaceans for "Palaeonotolgy"; the skeleton of an elephant for "Comparative Anatomy"; a shell for "Conchology"; a rattlesnake for "Herpetology"; a horseshoe crab for "Crustacea"; and Fossils - "Botany," Entomology," "Crustacea," and "Zoology" showing a fossilized plant, fish, dragon fly and lobster. Title: Headquarter Infantry Corps National Guards [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing views and vignettes related to the Pennsylvania Militia. Central view shows troops on display in front of their tents at a militia campground. Men and women spectators watch the troops from near the tent of the commander in the foreground. The commander's tent, flanked by guards on foot and horseback, and four other tents, faces away from the troops who stand in formation. Also includes vignettes above, to the sides, and below the certificate text. Top vignette shows an exterior of the National Guards Hall built 1856-1857 at 518-520 Race Street. Troops form lines in front of the building. Vignette is in an oval frame that is partially covered in laurel, and bordered by cannons, swords, a drum, a spy glass, bayonets draped in cloth and adorned with wreaths, and medals. Side vignettes depict National Guard soldiers on stone pedestals. The militia man on the left wears a winter uniform and backpack, holds a rifle, and stands in front of the American flag. The soldier on the right wears a standard uniform, holds a rifle, and stands in front of the flag of the National Guard. Bottom vignette shows an American eagle on a "N.G." shield between female and male classical figures of war, heads down, leaning on shields and flags bordered by cannons and cannon balls. Title: The Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons The State Penitentiary for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Description: Membership certificate for the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons containing a bust-length portrait vignette of "Bishop White Presdt. 50 Years" and a "bird's-eye view of the Building's-Grounds and Environs" of Eastern State Penitentiary. Filigree surrounds the oval-framed portrait. View shows the prison built 1823-1836 after the designs of John Haviland at 2101-2199 Fairmount Avenue. Individuals walk and a horse-drawn wagon travel within the prison grounds that are surrounded by a brick wall with Gothic-style entrance gate. The grounds include garden plots. Pedestrians, including a man pushing a hand-cart, a carriage, and men on horseback travel in the streets outside of the penitentiary. Undeveloped land and cityscape, including Girard College, border the prison building. Also includes a descriptive paragraph about "This institution known as Cherry Hill State Prison 'At Philadelphia as the Model Prison of' The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline' or "Separate System' ..." Text describes the Separate System of incarceration where "each convict occupies a single cell or workshop" in addition to the construction, dimensions, and utilities of the building, including "seven corridors of cells," gas, "heat by hot water," and "water in each cell.", Issued to John McAlister [sic] Jr. on November 11, 1856.
