Title: Views in Fairmount Park Philadelphia, 1884
Description: Album containing eight pencil sketched, titled views of prominent sites at Fairmount Park. Includes Belmont Mansion from the East; Mount Pleasant; Tom Moore's Cottage above Columbia Bridge; Belmont Mansion from the West; Gen. Grant's Headquarters; the Elevator, (i.e. observatory) at Lemon Hill; Penna. R.R. Bridge (i.e., Connecting Railway Bridge); and Rockland Landing from Columbia Bridge., Drawing of Mount Pleasant depicts an exterior view of the Mount Pleasant Mansion built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. View shows the front entrance with a large tree in the left. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., Red leather binding stamped S. Description: Pencil drawing showing the 18th-century Georgian residence, also known as Pomona Hall, originally built in the 1710s and expanded in 1726 and 1788 at Park Boulevard and Euclid Avenue in Camden, N.J. "12 M" and "1726" are written on a chimney on the left of the building. Trees line the front of the property. Erected by Quaker yeoman and slave owner Joseph Cooper, Jr., the residence was inherited by his nephew Marmaduke Cooper in 1767. Title: Franklin W. Kohler bicycling events 1884
Description: Scrapbook of local newspaper and sports periodical clippings compiled by competitive Philadelphia bicyclist Frank W. Kohler, predominantly about his cycling pursuits and achievements, and involvement with the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club. Clippings describe local and regional bicycle tournaments and meets, including the exhibition at Jumbo Park in South Philadelphia and the second annual meet of the Pennsylvania Division League of American Wheelmen (1884); time records broken by Kohler and his peers, including the "Lancaster Pike" (1886); Pennsylvania Bicycle Club cycling tours, including to Baltimore (1884), Niagara (1885), and upstate New York (1888); and the history of the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club. Also contains various bicycle club event and race programs (some annotated with times), including for the West Philadelphia Athletic Association and Buffalo Bicycle Club; prize ribbons; a sign up sheet for a two week tour to Dingman’s Ferry organized by Kohler in August 1888; a pencil sketch titled “The Way the Victors get There Moral. Buy a____?" showing a bicyclist and his bicycle in a horse-drawn wagon; an invitation to the 1888 opening of the new building of the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club (3940-42 Girard Avenue); menus for club banquets; and two inscribed photographs. Photographs show a group portrait of the club in front of the "Penna. Bicycle Club House Philada Pa. 1884 [sic]" at Girard Avenue and racers lined up to start the "2 mile race won by F.W. Kohler served as First Lieutenant of the club founded in 1882 in West Philadelphia; held club speed records; and organized cycling tours of its members. By 1893, Kohler had relocated to Chicago and operated the Eddy Electric Manufacturing Company with his brother G. A. Kohler.
